  • On 28 April 1996, 35 people died and many more were injured in the Port Arthur tragedy.
Walter Mikac lost his wife and two daughters in the tragedy.
As he grieved, he wrote a heartfelt letter to the then Prime Minister, the Honourable John Howard OM AC, urging firearm safety reform.
“As the person who lost his wife and two beautiful daughters at Port Arthur, I am writing to you to give you the strength to ensure no person in Australia has to suffer such a loss,” Walter wrote.
Over the following months, their shared commitment led to critical changes to firearms safety legislation - a defining moment in Australia’s history.
Walter Mikac has donated the letters between himself and John Howard to the National Historical Collection at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.
