  • In this video I review everything else that was required to build this chicken tractor. I go over the wood framing of the coop, the fencing, water, food, solar and more. Unfortunately, I lost about a dozen video clips near the end of the build so I had to do some voice over work to help fill in the gaps. I hope you enjoy.

    A chain keeps rats out!?? Wow. I thought they were smarter than that. Either way, this is beyond amazing. Great for a person who wants chickens, but doesn't have time for them. Genius!

    One suggestion is that, if you use vertical contains for food and water storage I think you will have more space for the hens.

    Love the build, I can hardly wait to build my own. The chicken condo I built a year and a half ago is superb, but MOVING IT! UGH!. Way to heavy of lumber and everything. One suggestion. If you put a light inside the food container you would be able to see the level without even opening it.

      Good luck with your build. If you didn't already watch it, I posted a new video yesterday talking about some improvements that I had to make to mine as well as future improvements. It might give you some helpful information before you get started. th-cam.com/video/jPXawnu7zS4/w-d-xo.html

    I watched all the videos JUST to see how the side covers along the ground would keep the foxes from squeezing under and also the chickens. .. I cant be the only one.
    Please tell us and show us how that works.

    love the build. thanks so much for this series, I need to build one. I think I'll put the nesting boxes on top of the water and feed cabinets - make it so the birds can't get on top of them, and get rid of those weird spots where poop collects. I also think if you had put the battery tray under the feed cabinet (weight per gallon of feed is less than water), you could still have put a grate floor in between the cabinets. have you had any problems with predators getting under the chains? seems like it wouldn't even slow a weasel down.
    off to find some broken wheelchairs!

    Do you have any plans to develop the coop tractor further? I think it would be interesting to see whether its movement could be automated. A compass sensor linked to the Arduino could keep it moving in a straight line and it could simply move back and forth across, say, 3 lengths of itself?

      I sure do. I've been working on it over the last couple of weeks to make some upgrades. Hoping to have that video out in the next week or two. Thanks for watching.

    Awesome! Do you think you could have only used two motors? How much money in parts do you think it would cost to do this if you could get motors cheaply (like a starter motors at a junkyard or something?

    What stops predators (fox, opossum, racoon) from crawling under the canvas? Otherwise very well done.

    Could you show something more on the skirt? I seems to me that it might be a soft point for predictors but I am sure you have overcome that, it's just not clear how. Thanks.

      Yeah, the skirt is a weak point. Check out this video where I discuss that and hopefully answer your questions. th-cam.com/video/jPXawnu7zS4/w-d-xo.html

    I think it would be nice if you put “hydraulics” to raise and lower the coop of the ground instead of using that canvas edge

    Would you be able to run a small solar fence charger on this as well and run a hot wire a few times around the outside?? Or would that extra battery be too heavy for the wheelchair motors to take?

    • @FreeRangePeople
      @FreeRangePeople  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could probably do that. You would just need more battery power and more solar power.

    Where do you get the water tank? Or what kind of tank is it?

    • @FreeRangePeople
      @FreeRangePeople  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a overflow tank for a RV. I don't remember where I got it but probably on Amazon

    • @kaleseguin3871
      @kaleseguin3871 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Free Range People thank you. I build and sell small coops like these and a square tank is definitely the most space efficient. But I could never find an affordable one larger than 5 gal so I just use those square camping water jugs.
