Self moving chicken tractor build - Part 1 (Motors and Electronics)

  • Years ago I built a chicken tractor that I had to roll around manually. It worked well but it was heavy and I got tired of pushing it around. So, I decided to build a new chicken tractor that uses electric wheelchair motors to move itself. This is the first video in a series documenting how I built it. In this video I outline the motors and the controls for the coop.

I can't believe your video is only popping up in 2022. I watch homesteading videos all the time, so I don't understand it. I have subscribed. I saw your first video of this chicken tractor, and am completely hooked. I will need a bit of help; but, this is my answer to so many questions. I am 60 yrs young and disabled, but still self-sustaining, and try as they might to sequester me into a senior's apartment, I refuse to stop gardening, raising my own food, and preserving my own security. While pulling the rabbit tractors is easy, the chicken tractors are becoming a struggle. I was going to try modifying the lawnmower to move it, but this is so much better. I will save these videos so I can show each one to my son, the one supporting me in staying on my own, and with his help, this will be a Godsend that I'm sure others in my area will be interested in. Thank you for your ingenious design, and most of all for sharing it. An absolute Godsend! 🐔

    Can't wait for your V2.

Parts list for lumber and electric / electronics would greatly help for those of us who want to follow your footsteps!

This is awesome!!! My husband just put in solar on our camper so this will be a breeze. My only question is the water in the winter. How would you prevent freezing. Where we are in SW Virginia it gets pretty darn cold in the winter. Suggestions? Great job, thanks and will be looking at your more detailed video on the electronic/build part of this.

Proportional control is what you were trying to say. I've seen it in videos if remote control mowers

Keep an eye out for my next video, probably in a week or two where I make some improvements to it including predator proofing. Thanks for watching

Thank you for publishing this video.
    I love your tractor.
Have you heard of Ladies First Chicken Door?
It’s a North Carolina based company.
They build/sell solar controlled/powered automatic doors. Their design is very secure for the birds.

I have not heard of them. I will check them out. I am planning on building a V2 of this coop within the next year and that's one feature I want to build into it. Thanks

@@FreeRangePeople I was researching so that I could build a chicken tractor for my 75 year old parents this spring, when I came across yours. Now that I see that there is going to be a version 2, I'll wait a year until you create it and post a video.
It would be helpful to us novices if you could tell us the model number of the components, like the motors, solar kit, which casters, etc.
Again, fantastic job. I can't wait to build one for my parents!

Sounds like a plan. I will be probably shooting several videos as I build the V2 coop so you can feel free to comment with questions as I go and I can get you any details you need. These kind of chicken tractors would be PERFECT for the elderly.

    Very nice!
I wonder if you can set it up so the chicken tractor moves a little bit during daylight, but only a certain distance (safety concerns of course) I understand that maybe substantial upgrade

I love this build but I was wondering that as well. I suppose locking them in the coop during the day and hoping nothing comes after them in the run during the day.
