    Haugen is outclassed. And I'm all for him. Grew up around him and his brother. He's a very tough guy but not as quick to the punch and your going to get hurt with a southpaw. Rest in peace sweet pea

    its crazy to see how in sync Sweet Pea's quick foot movement and upper body was.

    cant understand the negatives on Haugen, he was a credible fighter. He faced an amazing athlete in Whitaker who was gifted with reflex speed, a fighter with strategy like all the great defensive fighters. Nothing wrong with Haugen, he just faced a classy fighter and it's a privilege to witness one of the best pound for pound fighters in history. Thank god for TH-cam!!! Thanks to 'southpawjab' for taking the time out to upload for us that love boxing history. Truely grateful

    Haugen was a damn good counter-puncher but was clearly overmatched against Whitaker. Greg Haugen's best wins were his rematch against Vinny Pazienza back in 1988 and his win over Hector Camacho in 1991.

    whittaker had the one thing all true greats need to have... the ability win fights in ways that defied his natural style. he even turned puncher when he needed to (nazario, hurtado)

    Pernell's coordination and movement were sublime. Barrage of body shots and a spearing stiff right jab. He was taking Haugen apart

    You know your good when it’s a fairly big deal if you lose a ROUND in your career-since he barely lost any fights- and I think it’s safe to say all of Sweet Peas losses except the Tito Trinidad fight we’re either questionable- If not a straight up robbery

    All this lack of power crap caused me to make this comment...The name of the sport is boxing "The Sweet Science" is to hit and not get hit...The name if the sport is NOT Knock every opponent out! Pernell Whitaker personified the sport of BOXING. What difference does it make if he was not a KO Artist?

    Agreed. Haugen was a good fighter. Whitaker was just too fast for him thought.

    Whitaker tended to dominate his opponents, including the likes of JC Chavez. His lack of a big punch only serves to underscore just hao good a boxer he was.

    What is nonsense? I don't know of many serious analysts that consider a Heavyweight in Ali to be more skilled than the Lightweight Whitaker in literal terms. In terms of resume, and what they have accomplished, or their greatness, Ali ranks ahead sure. But in terms of boxing ability, seriously, watch the two fight, Whitaker was clearly more skilled.

    We're not saying it was his best or most significant win, we're saying it was the performance he looked the best in, as in performed his overall best in. Chavez won about 3 rounds of their fight, and it was a lot more competitive than this one. Whitaker put on a great display, and that win was obviously much more meaningful, but it doesn't mean it was a more impressive display of skills or as pleasing a performance to the eye.

  • @diomiami
    @diomiami 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haugen was no bum; you must have not seen the wars he had with Vinny Pazienza--Haugen was a damn good counter-puncher. Haugen's style gave Camacho trouble in both fights; if you search your memory, Camacho won a controvesial split decision in their second fight.

    Haugen was a tough, slick fighter. World-class fighter fighting an all-time great. No shame in losing to Whitaker. Dierdorf and Wallau were a little over-the-top in their love for Sweet Pea though.

  • @stainshield
    @stainshield 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    dear diomiami i agree to disagree with you. first off, vinny paz was somthing like mickey ward, the only reason it became a war is because him and haugen both had big hearts and low skill level. second the first fight between camacho and haugen, camacho clearly didnt train and only lost because at the start of the 12th round he did not touch gloves. the second fight camcho clearly won, the only reason it was controversial is because of how close the score cards were.

  • @Mowglieboy69
    @Mowglieboy69 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not missing the point, in fact I clearly addressed the importance of the bout and how it doesn't factor into this at all. If fighter A beats the best opponent of his career in a very shitty, sloppy, boring performance, does that make it the best of his career just because of the competition? No, it most certainly does not. Whitaker performed very well against Chavez, but he showed more versatility and all-around ability in other fights, particularly this one.

  • @Balthazar066
    @Balthazar066 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whittaker fought his last fight in 2001, he suffered and injury and was stopped for the only time in his career. He finished with a record of 40-4-1 with 17 KO's.

  • @Mowglieboy69
    @Mowglieboy69 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whitaker was definitely more skilled than a prime Ali, in a P4P sense anyway. Ali was very quick with great reflexes, but made a lot of technical mistakes, and sometimes paid the price, though he usually always found the way to win. Whitaker in his prime put on better boxing exhibitions than Ali did.

    To the people commenting about Pernell's lack of power must not hear and see the vicious body shots he was landing all through the fight! Haugen at that point in his career was a tough son of a bitch and that's what kept him on his feet. Whitaker was one of THE best lightweights of all time and won titles in four different weight divisions!

  • @cstrait
    @cstrait 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    really? why don't you ask juan nazario and diobelys hurtado about whittaker's power. he even made chavez think twice before rushing in.

    @chisacat - maybe, but haugen had not business in this fight, same in his fight with chavez. As soon as he fought a world class fighter he looked like what he is - a good solid club fighter from a small town

    Whitaker didn't have to have power he had fun in humiliating his foe with his speed n accuracy and barely got hit in return. a class above most champions

  • @jimmylee8195
    @jimmylee8195 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Greg Haugen had a lot of potential but the drugs and women took a hold of him way to early in his career to see it blossom in to what it could have been, that happened to a lot of up and coming champions unfortunately, mike tyson and roberto duran come first to mind.

      +Jimmy Lee Haugen did well after this would lose to Paz in their trilogy last fight, Haugen would KO Mancini and beat a 38-0 Camacho for WBO jr welter title, lose rematch by SD, and at 32-4 Chavez fought him in 93 in Mexico, after Pernell would school Chavez

    • @jimmylee8195

      Robert Earle Stanton He had a good career, but it could have been better, like is said, drugs and a rocky relationship with the wife made it not so good.

    Look what was happening in the first 4 rounds between Zab and Mayweather before Zab fell apart like always. That is how it would be with Pea, but for the entire fight. Floyd has a lot more trouble with fighters that Pea would've made look bad. Look at Floyd vs Castillo, then look at Pea vs Chavez. The difference in class is immediate.

    Chavez was not the Ruler of the Ring. He might have been Mexico's greatest fighter to date, but real boxing fans know that Pernell Whitaker "put foot to ass" on Chavez.
    Real Talk!

      😂but won a decision with Haguen/the guy Chavez KO😂. Chavez made Whitaker run, and the whole world knows he ducked Chavez In his prime 🏆

    • @MarcusHardy2741
      @MarcusHardy2741 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Factsoverfeels8 Dude, Whitaker didn't duck Chavez in his prime. Chavez was STILL fighting at Jr. Featherweight and Featherweight when Whitaker was dominating at Welterweight. Makes you wonder why JCC chose to stay in those 2 weight classes for a LONG TIME. 🤔🤨🧐😏 You and I BOTH KNOW that JCC got out-slicked and outboxed by Whitaker. Plus JCC NEVER had the same power moving up in weight.... EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. Oscar De La Hoya proved that point about JCC. And the 2 fools who liked your comment are just as lost as you are when it comes to boxing, thank you.🥊🥊

    The Chavez fight was actually competitive, though Whitaker clearly won and was robbed of the decision. This fight was not even remotely competitive and was a flat out white wash. It was definitely the more impressive performance from an aesthetic point of view, even though the Chavez fight was the much bigger, more important win.
    And Haugen was far from a bum, with wins over Camacho, Pazienza, and Mancini. He was one of the top LW's around at the time. You're the one who knows jack shit.
