What a penny floor looks like 6 years later

  • Wondering how a penny floor sealed with polyurethane will hold up over time? Here’s a video of the condition of my penny floor that was installed on 2012. It hasn't been resealed so some patina / oxidation has happened but overall it's held up quite well over time.
    I'm getting a lot of the same questions in the comments so I'll try to answer the biggest ones here:
    1. Yes, the pennies have oxidized a bit since the polyurethane layer has worn off. I like the patina and the oxidation that has happened... although I admit I should clean it up and reseal it soon.
    2. YES, the polyurethane can be sanded off and the pennies cleaned using several different methods, then the floor resealed.
    3. I did not use EPOXY/RESIN for many reasons.. the biggest being that I don't like the way it looks (shiny layer of glass). And, it's also really temperamental to work with which made it a little too risky for me to try at that time. Lastly, I like that the polyurethane can be sanded off and I can make some changes to the floor. I plan to do this soon.
    4. Others have successfully created penny projects using epoxy resin so watch those videos if you are interested in learning about how to do that.
    5. Yes there are a few dimes in there (just for fun). All of the pennies are facing the same direction except for ones that have significant years (year my house was built, family/friend's birthdays that contributed to the project, etc). Those pennies are reversed or tails up -- just to add some whimsy & spark conversation.
    Thanks for watching!

      Aww.. thank you so much. I tried... many others have done this by reading my tutorials so I just wanted to point out all my mistakes to give them more confidence moving forward. When you are far away you can't see all the little issues -- and its more about the impact of the whole floor -- lol although by most of the comments you see you'd think that I did a horrible job and should be burned at the stake :-P

      @cthunter41 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of those pennies are facing the same way because they were bought that way on 12x12 inch sheets like mosaic tile lol. You can clearly see the edges of the sheets.

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @cthunter41 I put the pennies one by one onto 12x12 mosaic tile sheets myself... you can read about it in my blog as the description states: www.prettypurpledoor.com/copper-penny-floor-template/ (by the way the page has been shared nearly 4,000 times and there is also a huge gallery of submissions from others who have used my blog to make their own penny projects -- anything from floors to fireplace surrounds to countertops to complete feature walls). I used the tile sheets as a solution for gathering all the pennies and doing the project at my own pace without having to rip up my entryway. I apologize that didn't do it perfectly and I am the first to admit that it's not perfect if you listened to the video. However, please don't insinuate that I am lying or attempting to mislead or misinform anyone... I am not. I appreciate your comment nonetheless.

      cthunter41 thanks! I just wanted to do it on my own time (obv a time consuming project). Didn’t want my floor to be torn up for weeks so it just made sense to pre-make the sheets

      Mariwan Sewngi that’s because you used epoxy. She used gout and polyurethane.

    Why wouldn't you clear epoxy it?

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +147

      I don't like the way epoxy looks. it looks like walking on glass. It's also extremely temperamental to work with and could have potentially ruined the floor and the hardwoods surrounding it if I made an error. Polyurethane was (and still is) a safer solution and can be sanded down and reapplied after cleaning up the pennies (which I will likely do someday). This was all just a big experiment and something fun/different to try... after posting it to my blog many many others have made their own penny projects (many are better than mine). If you click the link in the video description you can see a whole page of penny projects that others have submitted to my blog. Some of them use an epoxy resin and you will quickly see the difference. Overall I love the way my floor has worn and would use the polyurethane again... I'm an old soul and like patina... to each his own I guess :)

      Kreig Dernier a friend of mine had a multi colored epoxy garage floor, its not even slippery its like walking on a smooth concrete slab to be honest, but with it being next to the front door, it'll be exposed to the elements, it could be slippery when wet

      KiLLF33D my concern is based on my northern roots. And the same reason why I wouldn’t allow linoleum at my front door. The first steps into the house with snow on your shoes can be downright dangerous. I would have thought the same for epoxy.

      Pretty Purple Door Wow I honestly didn’t expect you to respond at all! Thank you so much! I’m glad you didn’t take it the wrong way. I’m very traditional as far as how I like floors in my house but if I had a small area like that in my house I think I’d love to try something creative like you did! I think it’s less of flooring and more of an art piece? Is that weird? 😂 It’s cool that it’s incorporated into the floor though because it wouldn’t be as cool hanging on the wall. I’m sure it strikes up immediate conversation with your guests too! Keep doing creative stuff in your house. It’s way more fun that way. (:

      Hi John, the pennies have 6 coats of polyurethane... but that was 6 years ago and I haven't resealed since. I personally don't have a problem with the way it looks. But it can be sanded down, cleaned up and shined and resealed if that's the look you are going for.

  • @JustHeAndMe7733

    The lines aren't bad. They make it look like there is a tile effect which I like. And the Canadian coin wouldn't bother me so bad. But seeing the one silver dime everyday would drive me bonkers. Especially since it's of center. Maybe as a center piece I could but then again probably not. Lol. But that's just me. Everyone is different. The floor is very pretty. I love how some of the pennies have changed color like an aged piece of copper. It's very creative. Which I love that diy creativity aspect. I'm into diy.

      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    • @gjolinares23
      @gjolinares23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dacia Helm "tile effect" you speak of.. do you mean like the seams from a bad tile install?

    • @JustHeAndMe7733
      @JustHeAndMe7733 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gerardo Linares Yes you could call them seams. But I don't think it's fair to say that it's a "bad tile install." 1 they are not tiles. So the time and effort put into laying each coin on her knees by hand certainly deserves a lot of credit in my opinion. And 2 one man's ugly painting is another man's work of art... Picasso for example. You may not like it for your house but why can't you appreciate the work and creativity put into it? Why does everyone's first reaction now days always have to be one of criticism and degradation? Would you look at the Sistine Chapel and say where are all the clothes on these people? What pervert painted this ceiling? Would you say how you could have done better? Maybe the problem isn't the tile effect. Maybe it's the attitude the person views things with. When you make your penny floor please share your work. We would all love to see how well you do.

      Why are there three or four dimes, and four or five rotated downwards, when almost all the others are facing the same direction?! They look like deliberate anomalies. I'm also not a fan of the squares. Honestly, I think I'd like it better if you had just dumped a bag of pennys on a floor coated in glue, and just brushed them around so that they laid randomly according to the will physics and chance.

      The idea is awesome, but the materials used are what's being questioned. There are people that do flooring for a living, and there are people who collect coins for a hobby. If you want a perfect floor, consult these people for it. The dark spots will not clean up because the copper coating is gone and the zinc is oxidizing (pennies made after 1982 are zinc with a copper coating).

    Did you lay these individually? There seems to be a square pattern in the grout, so im assuming you laid it down in sections somehow.

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Myke Baumgartner thanks :) yes I made a template and glued the pennies to mosaic sheets so I didn’t have to tear up the floor until I had enough pennies. I should have cut the mosaic mesh a little bit smaller so the pennies would overhang off of it because when I laid it out some of the mesh was overlapping a little bit and caused those lines. But you definitely could use the template without getting the lines - links are in the description to all kinds of resources for making your own.

    All these negative comments amaze me. I thought you explained yourself perfectly as to why you chose poly as opposed to epoxy and what not. Even mentioning the imperfections and being happy with them. So it kills me how according to say many people you did it wrong. I mean WTF. It's your floor and you did it the way you wanted to. If you are happy with it then sounds to me like you got it right. Anywho I think it looks great especially after 6 years and having never done it before. Just my thoughts.

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      REPO MAN thanks so much! I thought I explained myself as well. And I zoomed in on all the mistakes to talk about them. Most of these guys are just watching 10 seconds and giving their expert interior decorating opinions while living in their moms basement. Oh and they’re all artists and creatives who came up with the idea before anyone had done it. Lots of professionals here :) :) anyway thanks for taking the time to actually watch the video. Because I used poly the floor will be easy to refinish when I get a chance to. Although maybe I should just tear it up because of what everyone else thinks haha

      Agreed. She is almost asking for it by essentially saying "It sucks but I wanted it that way because I am lazy" and then justifying that with a not so subtle passive aggressive attack on people who are "crazy" about details and getting things perfect. Pointing out mistakes but then saying you either like them or did them on purpose is not the same as pointing out mistakes and saying "this is what I did wrong, this is what I learned from these mistakes, and what I will do differently next time". Nobody responds well to excuses--especially people on TH-cam who get to critique anonymously.
      End of the day if you really don't care about the mistakes then don't let the haters bother you either. Like you said, at least you got off your ass and gave it a try =)

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gene Phipps the poly was not a mistake and it will clean up nicely when I have time to do it. And yes I’ve made a lot of mistakes on the floor... which I’ve pointed it. but my choice of sealer was not a mistake. I’m sorry if I come off passive aggressive. I recorded this for my blog not for TH-cam. Lots of people who read my blog try to do their own penny floor/project and they often get hung up in the Tiny details. So the video was meant to be encouraging to them to show them that yes I’ve made mistakes... and no it’s not the end of the world if you do... so no I’m not looking for attention I am just trying to help some people out not get attacked.

    What do you do for regular maintenance: sweeping, mopping, etc. Are there cleaning materials to avoid that won't ruin the poly finish or cause a chemical reaction with the pennies?

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lance, thanks for your question. I coated the floor with Mixwax polyurethane for hardware floors, so I'd recommend the same cleaning materials you would use on a hardwood floor. Since there's a coating on it... the chemicals wont affect the pennies -- unless of course you don't reseal it every so often (like me). At that point I would just use soap/water and make sure you wipe it dry right away. Or, just reseal it so that the pennies are protected. You can check out more FAQs here: www.prettypurpledoor.com/penny-floor-faq/

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love copper so I've always been attracted to that type of decor. When I moved into my house I found pennies EVERYWHERE. Like on top of every door jam, in closets, under the vents... inside cabinets. I started collecting them and I tried to research why someone would leave pennies somewhere. The only possibilites I could find online were 1- something to do with alcoholics anonymous and 2- to keep away evil spirits.
      So basically after I read that I thought... maybe these pennies are keeping evil spirits away. I don't want them coming in so I thought putting those pennies right at the entryway would help. Thanks for asking I'm not sure anyone has ever asked me why... all my friends already know I'm crazy :)

    I like it better worn down a bit; they look more like real pennies. I think you have to polyurethane it every 3 years or so, which takes like half an hour to do so no big deal if you want to keep the shine. We used the template on ours but we actually punched holes in the middle of the template and drew it on the floor then glued the pennies down, grouted them and put a polyurethane coat on them.

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
