I just want to say that these teachers and parents deserve respect for encouraging students and genuinely caring for them beyond what is required. Respect!
It just makes me realise how privileged I am (For everyone saying I don't know what privileged means the privileged definition is having special rights ,advantages or immunities . I wasn't just saying I'm privileged because I go to a better school My family is wealthy and I get to go on holiday and experience culture in other countries therefore I am at an advantage to people in my school who haven't been to other countries and even if I was just talking about it to do with school I go to a better school than they do . My school has better facilities than there's .Meaning I am at an advantage .)
Esme Hayden you’re not “privileged” and the other person who said “same” isn’t “privileged” too. Just because you feel bad doesn’t automatically make you a privileged person. Be grateful for your parents for sending you to a better school and be grateful for how hard they work for you. You might say that I’m saying it’s wrong to feel bad but that’s not the case. You are not privileged for going to a better school or just plain out feeling bad.
Zi - my personal opinion, yes I was privileged to attend a better school, as it led to far more post secondary opportunities (and beyond). It's ok to say so, again in my personal opinion.
I live in Louisiana and just realized how privileged I am. My school isn’t rich, but we have a football and softball field. We can also afford to take trips to big universities in the state. Also, every year the 8th graders take a trip to Washington, d.c. The fact that these kids don’t even have a proper gym makes we want to give all of my school’s stuff to them. They’re the ones who need it.
Those kids are the strongest kids I have ever seen. In the face of corruption like that it is amazing to see those little kids pull through. I really hope that they find just one opportunity to find a better life around the nation. God bless to all of those kids.
Chigozirim Ifebi well yes that is true but as a black folks who gets all A's in his classes. This is not so true. First of all from personal experience all of the other black folks in my schools average is a 70-81% but also from scientific research it was figured out that a average black student turns in about 92% of their homework and their average is a C in math B in many others and a C in both social studies in science so their overall grade is a B- which is not bad but not as smart as the rest of the world but personally I think everyone is smart just it is harder for some to bring it out
The sad part is that the reason why these grades are so bad is because they don't have the material too be taught these type of things. I'm fortunate enough to be an African American living in a wealthy area near Detroit. My parents grew up and Detroit working their way out of poverty to be able to give me the life I have today. My goal in life is too be able to be successful and come back to my home town of Detroit and help these kids thrive too their best potential. Hopefully more people have this goal, not just too help Detroit, but to help other cities like this too fight for better education and materials.
Shahin Dijagah man I hope these kids do better. I'm black American girl turning 13 and I'm doing really good in school and actually kinda sorta better than the white kids in my class. I don't listen to that IQ crap because I'm getting A's and B's and that's all I need to know. thBut still I hope these kids can get better it's sad. And yes everyone is smart in their way.

Flute Player Victoria A LOT of dps schools don’t have art or music awards “we don’t have the money for it “ apparently we are broke. Wanted to update My last text. At least they have a counsellor. My school in Chicago didn't. Their nurse's office wouldn't even give me daily lunchtime medicine, because they were so understaffed. I had two allergic reactions as a result of not receiving that medicine. The worst thing was, a girl in my school got an allergic reaction and died in an ambulance because her Epi pen wasn't in school, and they wouldn't give her someone else's in the ambulance. They still refused to give me lunchtime medicine. My second reaction occurred then. At the end of the year, we moved. Those kids have it bad, but at least they aren't dying from a lack of medical care in schools. My school was rated as above average in Illinois.
Same here, I was in Chicago as a kiddo and we never had a pool or a gate like that school (of course I still feel terrible for those kids at that school, I'm just saying there are other schools just like this in chicago)

Mike Swivel the reason they are that way is because they don’t have the materials and opportunities to be brought up as a successful human being. The ones who do make it through have put in lots of effort to change their culture of living. There is no need to stereotype a video like this.

Studies show that spending per student doesn't always improve schooling (see:Atlantic City) but fr if this place don't have any ink or books someone give em like $100,000 thats probably more than all the teachers get in a year

I miss the real Detroit, the great Detroit zoo, the rides through the amazingly lit city, the poster child of American civilization, the American Detroit
@@PactusPandaCactus Agreed, the politics has nothing to do with Detroit's demise. It was when all the car factories moved to China, creating what we know as the "Rust belt". It's not just Detroit, but Gary, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Columbus, ETC. Places that weren't the cleanest, but where people worked together to get us the cars we drive in our daily lives. Since they left, so did the workers, and gangs moved in tagging up every street sign and underpass in sight, and leaving the city to decay. Des Moines, which is near where I live, is also a small victim of this. Our Firestone factories are still in tact, but all of the grain elevators and textile mills went abandoned from the decline of the railroad. It's not as bad as some of the more eastern states, but places like Norwoodville and South Town have increased in drug trafficking, and everything just looking depressed. Then again, I think just about any major city has a slummy area in town.
@@theoneandonlyrustyshaklefo6256 Not saying they aren't. I'm sure there's a reason why people still live there versus Detroit. I just know those cities got gangs and bad slums all around. Solution is to just demolish the abandoned places and add newer nicer jobs to drive out the druggies.
Because for most white people who decide elections, these conditions don't affect them. So it's a vicious complicated racist struggle ever since the Civil rights movement to lock black people into bad conditions.

This is so upsetting to me. My father went to Spain and he said it was a very good school with a great learning environment. He tears up when talking about the school now. He worked for the school board and tried to get more funding to help the school but time after time it did not succeed. Spain deserves better. Detroit Public Schools deserve better. Made me appreciate my school more. My friends were complaining about how they wanted some new installments to our playground when we literally have a big field with a track, water fountains you usually see at colleges, we have money for trips like South Korea, and Washington. Our school is well clean, sanitary, and we have technology in our hands. I feel so much appreciation for my elementary/middle school
This seriously makes me cry. I never realized how bad other places have it. I'm lucky enough to go to a high school with a large gym and good classes with proper renovations and thousands of dollars worth of quality equipment at my disposal. These poor babies have it so rough. I'm so sorry.
I went to good schools all throughout my childhood. We had field trips, honors classes, books, computers, and materials. I even went to a private school. It was fun! But, this is sad. We gotta do better, America!
I’m from clarkston Michigan- an hour from Detroit and an hour from flint. It’s the suburbs and when she said that they suburbs don’t have those problems she’s absolutely 100% right. It was never like this. Those kids and teachers are the strongest people for putting up with that
One of my teachers quit her job, and that left my class with more than 20 confused substitutes a month. A lot of kids get confused, and grades aren't the best either. It was never our fault..... The past students in our grade were really bad, but we weren't. Yet those kid's action affected our education. No teachers wants to work in are school full time because of them....
Leaving aside how this lack of resources affects these kids' education directly, I think it's in a way far worse that they are made to feel hopeless and betrayed at such a young age. It is even more important than being educated in specific subjects to be conveyed a certain positive or at least not unnecessarily negative outlook on life. Being betrayed by their own society in regards to very basic needs such as education will render them crushed for probably forever if left alone.
I would love a swimming pool in my school. I live in australia in the hot heat and my school doesnt even have proper airconditioning. Apparently there was a rat problem too? One time it was so hot i couldnt even breathe. I didnt even know schools had pools tbh-
I went to a very posh preparatory school (nursery to year 8) and it had a pool, gym, huge sport fields, etc, and I hated it then I left but now I realise that I should have been grateful because I was so privileged.
***** Detroit the actual place would probably be inhabitable as soon as it gets a bit worse. As places break down the Gud Kids will be taking chemicals everywhere, buildings with toxic chems will quit filtering. Im assuming a lot of the land and water would get poisoned from a real collapse. I bet the people in charge falsify water quality tests so they can be lazy and not clean it and stuff. It already looks poisoned.

And we use our instruments and have a band teacher but i wish we had a teacher like we did back in the day whose respectible but yeah main part of me writing this is for u to know what we're doing now in 2018
I am so sorry for these kids. I always thought my middle school was hell on earth, but I had every tool I needed to succeed. Programs, classrooms, teachers, extracurriculars, sports, everything. I could never imagine not having access to these things which makes me realize how privileged I really am. This needs to change.
I was born and raised in Southwest Detroit and have experienced the crippling system first hand. When I was 12 years old my mother pulled me out of school, and I didn’t go back until I was adopted at 16 after my mother died. I was completely lost in the system and the school district did not care. A truancy officer came to my house *TWICE* in 4 years. Any other school district would’ve had my mother incarcerated. It’s truly devastating to know how fucked DPS is. I pray it gets better for the sake of the kids who are still struggling for their education. I’m very grateful to have been adopted. I went back to school kicking and screaming thinking I wouldn’t be able to succeed. I had a 7th grade level education and I never thought I’d be able to graduate. May 31st of 2018 was the day I graduated high school at the age of 20. I did it, and I hope all of these kids can someday as well.
“America is great” “this is the best country in the world” for the Americans that say that, it doesn’t look like that applies for everyone and everything.

Detroit is a run down part of michigan, like Flint I live in Fenton and some of my family live in Detroit and it's not sad or depressing this stuff is normal to me. Most kids go to Fenton schools and Grand Blanc so Detroit doesn't have all the funding from the students/government to provide good or great schooling.
Don't look past the first 5 comments or so, sadly some people are suggesting a multitude of racist answers as to why the school is like this. I hope the kids get a better environment soon.
I live in Ohio not far from Detroit and this is no exaggeration the Detroit public school system is in despair there needs to be a change. Until that happens the city of Detroit will continue to struggle unfortunately.
Thank you for your kind words. If anything, the money that fund schools should be properly used. It's ridiculous how much is wasted! These kids deserve a good life.
Y’all should go to the Livonia public school they are nice and give free breakfast and lunch to kids and the food is actually good. It’s about 15minutes away from this school.
I love teachers. We are often not given what we need to make education equitable for our students, but we go in and do the best we can anyways with very little resources.
I’m thankful for our schools here in Livonia Michigan Detroit is a beautiful city falling apart because people think of Detroit as a bad city when these poor children can even go outside your school is in my prayers and my thoughts
Seeing all that empty, unused space was sad to see, but the band room broke my heart. Band was my favorite part of being in school. Those kids deserve so much better.
God won't do anything as he is a fictional character made by some people in Israel thousands of years ago. Also, praying won't do penis to help them. Maybe send a letter to Michigan's legislatures to make the proposition in which to fund public schools a lot more.
I was born and raised in Detroit. I know this school (I didn't attend, but I had a friend who did) and plenty more in Detroit like it. There were times when I couldn't go onto the playground because there was an "issue". Times when I couldn't go to school for a full week or two because of "building issues" being fixed. And the many, Many, MANY days when I and my older brother had to bring sacks of basic food home with us because lunch wasn't available. The schools in Detroit are still bad, if not worse now as they were 10-20 years ago when I was in elementary school/middle school. I was in absolute *SHOCK* when I first started going to a school in Madison Heights where the lunchroom was HUGE. There was room for a band AND a choir to have separate rooms! The gym was massive and NOT tore up! Classrooms didn't have a few windows boarded. Man...the government really has to step up.

you’re not “privileged” and the other person who said “same” isn’t “privileged” too. Just because you feel bad doesn’t automatically make you a privileged person. You are not privileged for going to a better school or just plain out feeling bad.

hi from India

Corntastrophy Cleveland, Columbus, and Indianapolis are trying hard though.

I’m a music student. Seeing that this school don’t have a music program anymore breaks my heart. They don’t have a gym, proper supplies, and more teachers truly is heartbreaking. These teachers try to give their students the best education they can get in rough conditions.
Videos like this make me recognize my privilege so much more. so greatful to go to a good school
Julian Grant what privilege exactly, because this shit school isn't like this because of there skin. It's because the fucking town is ran by Democrats. White privilege don't exist
This brought back so many memories . I graduated from Spain in 1972 . ❤
Don't look past the first 5 comments or so, sadly some people are suggesting a multitude of racist answers as to why the school is like this. I hope the kids get a better environment soon.
Your buzzword shuts down conversation.
I live in Ohio not far from Detroit and this is no exaggeration the Detroit public school system is in despair there needs to be a change. Until that happens the city of Detroit will continue to struggle unfortunately.
Is a abonded city there city that fill with sky scraper people barely work there and also the house are destroyed
The masses wanted more welfare which made businesses close. Everything has a consequence.
This looks like it used to be a quality school especially with the pool
the city was a rich one years ago ;(
I’m so great full that I’m privileged and for what my parents have given me.. My heart goes out to these kids 😭💕
I have watched this video a million times but every time I’m still shocked about it. All I can hope is thing got better since 2016
Its detroit, what did u expect
Thank you for your kind words. If anything, the money that fund schools should be properly used. It's ridiculous how much is wasted! These kids deserve a good life.
Y’all should go to the Livonia public school they are nice and give free breakfast and lunch to kids and the food is actually good. It’s about 15minutes away from this school.
Austin S. Yo I used to live in Livonia. I moved 5 years ago to North Carolina but I went to Hoover Elementary School And it sucked soo much.
I live in wyandotte our school is terrible fights everyday wax pens everyone got one (not that I’m complaining 🤣)
I love teachers. We are often not given what we need to make education equitable for our students, but we go in and do the best we can anyways with very little resources.
I cannot stress this enough
THIS IS THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY _OF OUR WORLD_
We literally _CANNOT_ spend too much money on them
gotta love that "ADD YOUR NAME" at the end
It’s time to fully fund Detroit schools, Tony!
Me: Uh, Ah, AAHHHHHHHH!
Its a petition
These teachers are wonderful! They are doing the best they can for the children.
Man, this hurts, we should really care and prepare the next generation of this great nation of ours.
Lol joke
@@blankblank5409 Lmao 💀
... Detroit being a shithole doesn't make the rest of the country trash lol.
This just makes me thankful for my school.. We have books, computers and a amazing gym.. I wish everyone could have this too..
I’m thankful for our schools here in Livonia Michigan Detroit is a beautiful city falling apart because people think of Detroit as a bad city when these poor children can even go outside your school is in my prayers and my thoughts
Lmao still better than mine
I'm serious our gym is the bus parking lol
Rere'sAlluringGalaxy I’m done
Dude saaammmeee
Rere'sAlluringGalaxy I'm from the UK we never had a gym room much less a pool !
Is this a competition of who goes to the worst school?
that's still a gym. my school gym used to be the same way. that is much much better than just walking the halls.
These kids need the right education like everybody else in his world
Seeing all that empty, unused space was sad to see, but the band room broke my heart. Band was my favorite part of being in school. Those kids deserve so much better.
Wow this is absolutely terrible its appalling that no one is stepping in to help. God bless those teacher who are making a point and taking a stand
God won't do anything as he is a fictional character made by some people in Israel thousands of years ago. Also, praying won't do penis to help them. Maybe send a letter to Michigan's legislatures to make the proposition in which to fund public schools a lot more.
As somebody who loves playing her clarinet, the band room makes me sad.
Lots of comments blaming black people as a whole for this. Whatever happened to "It's not about race"?
Upper Reality yeah I’m confuse I thought racism is over well I guess not, I’m very disappointed at this society, I mean I have black friends and I don’t care about their skin color because it doesn’t define you.
It's not about racism, we have a problem that can't and won't be addressed because of political correctness and a false belief that everyone is equal.
Upper Reality Definitely not about race.....BUT it is definitely about political affiliation
Chaq G. Haha no, it's about democrats giving free stuff to certain voting blocks to stay in power.
mquiroz90 They are suffering because they have embraced the victim culture. Instead of blaming others for their problems, it's time they start fixing them. They can start by stop having kids out of marriage. Then they can learn how to use a garbage can.
I really want to do everything I can to help these kids.❤️
they have just given up on these babies
S. G Detroit has given up in general
What the fuck is the government doing
They re neglecting Detroit
What are they doing with taxes
I know I’m sad i just stumbled across this video
We need more charter schools, they are handled better with less money and better academic results
Politicians are against them because they created successful students based on merit and don't trap people in cycles of government assistance.
The problem is that only 47% of Detroit's citizens pay taxes which is the reason why the schools lack funding.
+Harvey Blandon You're misinformed as to how the schools are funded. All public schools in the state receive money based on the student population.
+carolouann So are you. There's also local property tax. That's why areas with expensive houses have the best districts.
+Big Booty Smasher Maybe you're not from Michigan. School funding in Michigan was changed from local property taxes to a per student allowance. All districts are funded this way in Michigan.
+Shawn Jones are you a white women?
+Harvey Blandon - that's the same percentage of adults that are literate. It is very sad.
I’m so upset by this. I can’t even imagine how that feels. When they showed the band room that was empty and hasn’t been visited in two years I couldn’t handle it.
Detroit let's fix a school
I think the androids will help
*_SAYS GOOGLE_*
i use to live in detroit as a child and my elementary school was alot like this but a little less depressing.
i always hated my school and then i saw this, it breaks my heart to see a school with such large lack of supplies,
these kids don't even have a fair start in life, they are set up to be homeless, unemployed and in jail.
Nicole A Lool true
Unfortunate genes, you mean.
Genetics have nothing to do with it. If these kids were born into wealth they would most likely succeed.
You can't deny biology and statistics. Intelligent people "succeed" better than less intelligent people.
What in this video indicates the children have "unfortunate genes"?
