  • prrt1steamloco... - Please help fund the T-1 Trust! They are a wonderful organization, building an advanced new 4-4-4-4 T-1 steam locomotive from scratch!
    On one of my trips to Albany, I decided to make to make one more video of the PNWR 1501. Recently, this EMD SD7 was fitted with trucks removed from an SD9, the 1851.
    If you enjoy my videos, feel free to like, comment, and share! Thanks for watching!

    My favorite locomotive of all time. Love the non-turbocharged sound. Has been since i was 15 [1997]

      I agree, and you want to know something, that train was built in 1952 and put into service in Albany Oregon in the last 1980s early 1990s and that train is older than I am and I’m only 18 years old

    Looks like the old Locomotive is maintained pretty well as far as maintenance. Its not belching smoke or raw fuel from the stack. I agree it could use some paint but its doing the job its called upon to do..I saw a lot worse looking Loco's with my 35 years on the railroad and many that were poorly maintained mechanically...

    This is an EMD SD7R. The R stands for rebuilt (done by SP in 1979). 1501 was also the SP number: espee.railfan.net/spsd07r.html for more info.

    Great video. I was looking for examples of a diesel engine only powered locomotive. This PNWR 51, it does not use a generator and traction motors to make it go right?
    I would like to research diesel engine only locomotives, but I am not sure where to begin or what to call them. It seems like most locomotive information skips from Steam powered units directly into the diesel-electric jobs, with nary a nod given to the diesel engine + transmission kinds of locomotives. Can you please tell me why this is?

    • @Britlurker
      @Britlurker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrc109 - It is a diesel electric. Im not sure there are many diesel-mechanical locos of that size. There were a few in the UK, small shunters (switchers) but thats about it apart from narrow gauge locos.

    • @mrc109
      @mrc109 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brit Lurker Mr. Lurker, perhaps the small locomotive I saw in the steel yards was a "switcher". These units never left the steel mill property boundary. The one I saw was used to pull "pig" cars filled with white hot iron and later "thimble Cars" full of white hot slag to be dumped into a pit where it was later broken up (hammermill), crushed and screened by the IMS (International Mill Services) guys.
      The locomotive was small in size, but mighty in what it could pull. It was unlike anything I had ever witnessed up close before. The reason why I don't think it was a diesel electric is because how it sounded when under a full load. Normally a diesel electric job will rev-up, powering up the alternators to operational speed to get the kind of juice required to power the traction motors placed under a huge startup torque load. This one was very different, when it was under load, it was amazingly quiet and the engine rpm's were incredibly low. By the way it sounded, I imagined it to be a 4 cylinder job, with pistons the size of a 35 gallon barrel. When at idle I would swear that it ran slower than 300 rpm. Under a full load that engine speed probably only tripled at the most. The most incredible thing about being near to this little beast was the effect that each piston firing had on my person. The first time I "felt" this thing go by me, I ran away from it in fright because I thought I had been hit in the chest by some flying debris. The second time it went by I was a little farther away and slowly approached it as it made its way up to the slag dumping area. I could feel each "pulse" that engine made, it was incredible how it shook my innards. My lungs felt like they were being compressed by some great force. The sound of the engine was very quiet, its like the "whomp" of each piston firing was so low in frequency that I felt it rather than hearing it. I have been to a lot of rock concerts and "felt" the power of 30 or 40 Marshalls pumping out the base notes, but the wall of sound they created was also deafening to hear. The locomotive was quiet running but incredibly powerful in the subsonic range of sound production. I live fairly close to a Southern Pacific rail line and hear them slowing down and stopping all the time, waiting for traffic to clear somewhere else up ahead. I sometimes walk the tracks for fun, hiding when they go by of course. These great behemoths, some with up to 4 tractors up front, all pulling 100 cars plus, all loaded with western coal headed for the Hawthorne Power plant, none of these diesel electrics have the same effect on me when I'm up close and they power up for takeoff. Its a totally different experience. No thump, thump just lots of Roar like mighty lions charging for the prey. They are scary too, but in a different sort of way. The sheer amount of noise they make overwhelms all the senses, making it difficult to have any kind of protective sensory self awareness of ones surroundings. Its like being at a drag strip and feeling numb all over after a funny car clears the lights. Very scary.
      Let me know if you can possibly identify some engine models and manufacturers of those shuttle engines, (shunters). Thats probably what I was seeing working inside the steel plant.
      Thanks a lot.

    • @Slipperyisimproving
      @Slipperyisimproving หลายเดือนก่อน

      No she hasn't. She was originally meant to be scrapped due to G&W getting into trouble with the EPA for using old diesel locomotives like #1501 formerly SP #5280, #2701 #1401, #1530 but surprise surprise BUGX acquired the old SD7 and she's stored intended for preservation after the acquisition by BUGX. Don't worry, she's not scrapped. BUGX has plans to send her to a museum but for now she's in storage somewhere on the Oklahoma and Kansas Railroad formerly the BNGR that got shut down by the FRA and then Rock Island Rail of Mississippi was given the greenlight to operate the BNGR for at least 30 days to handle the needs of customers on the BNGR line.
