    Videos and photos really don't do it justice. Just the enormity of the plant, like a city within itself. To think of the catastrophe which happened nearly 40 years ago and the results which are still presenting themselves to us now. An unfathomable amount of respect for those who still work and live there today, a thankless job.

      also they can't shut down the plant immediately as certain processes continue for years to come so people have to observe and operate it for safety and shut down gradually. it took very long time for Ignalina to be decommissioned and that's without having a terrible disaster and also improved reactor (instead of rbmk 1000 it was operating a rbmk 1500)

      @cjmillsnun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had to. Losing 1000 MW (reactor 4) is a pain, but 4000 MW (all 4) would be unsustainable long term. The other three reactors were off for some time while decontamination of the site was done and essential safety modifications were made and were brought on one by one. The last coming back on being unit 3 as that wasn't safe until the shelter object was completed.
      Not all the reactors kept running for 14 years. Unit 2 shut down only 5 years after the accident due to a fire in the turbine hall.
      Unit 1 shut down in 1996 leaving Unit 3 running until 2000.

    • @ladyshaver69
      @ladyshaver69  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The purpose of employees there is that the CHNPP is official still a reactivalable Power Plant. Most of the employees mark their time of work in my opinion. There is not so much to do in the plant inselfe excluded the employes who works at the new safe confinement. Youre right with your claim, that there is still a huge amount of melted radioactive material called corium in block 4, but the walls and entrance in the direction of B4 are covered with lead. After the disaster they decontaminated the inside of the Power plant, but there is still a higher background direction than normal.

      bormisha - there are no special requirements to get inside the plant. I’ve copied in the reply from solo east travel when I arranged my trip back to the zone and into the plant next year.
      “Dear Chris,
      The visit to ChNPP (Reactors #1 or #2) is possible but has some paculiarities that you should be aware of when booking:
      1. You should be ready that it can be cancelled without any explanations even on the day of your tour.
      2. There is extra fee for this excursion - $95 p/p. This fee is fully refundable in a case of cancellation.
      3. Available only on MON-FRI and should be booked minimum 10 working day in advance.
      4. There is a requirement of authorities that all visitors of the Power Plant should input into the development of the area which suffered from the disaster. For this reason in addition to the excursion of the ChNPP they offer an obligatory short tour of the Slavutych town with overnight stay there. So instead of overnight stay in Chernobyl town you will go by local train to Slavutych town.
      For further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us any time.”

    Can someone explain the uniforms and hats? They wore the same ones back in the 80s when the accident occurred. Was that specific to the USSR? Were they protective or practical in any way? Just curious.

      There's been 2 major incidents and only 1 came with deaths. (plus the soviets were incredibly stubborn) I think more people have died from coal power in a span of 10 years than people died in chernobyl.
