*Correction Stallone said he saw Hulk Hogan on TV Wrestling but it wasn't Wrestle Mania as that show didn't exist in 1982. Sorry for any inconveniences!

I'm glad you posted a comment correcting this because as soon as you said it I was like, wait a minute, Rocky 3 came out a few years before WM and before Hogan even became champion. In fact, I bet you'll get a ton of wrestling fans immediately commenting about Hogan getting fired for taking the part. And he actually didn't come back to the WWF/WWE until a couple of years later when Vince McMahon bought the company from his dad. Any little error when it comes to wrestling and you can be sure that we wrestling fans will catch it right away.

That's right. Rocky was spending an entire day feeling sad over the death of his manager Mickey. Then when Rocky enters into his old neighborhood boxing gym, he hits a small punching bag to release his steam. Then a mysterious voice says, "that's not the way to punch it." A petrified Rocky turns around and asks who's there. And then, ta-da, Apollo is seen standing in the entrance dressed like a million bucks. And the rest is history.

Same experience. When they finish the ten count on Clobber Lang and he's officially out, the audience burst out into spontaneous applause. It was wildly satisfying because, crazy as it sounds in 2020, at that moment in the theatre of 1982, it wasn't a certainty Rocky was going to win the rematch so it was tense the entire three round bout going through the up and down, rope a dope, rollar coaster ride of emotions where it was going and how it would all end. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it seems obvious and a foregone conclusion, but back then, the rulebook of cinematic character arch's and screenwriting laws 101 was still being cemented in real time.

I always liked the scene where you see Carl Weathers turn around while sprinting and runs backwards while staying ahead of Rocky. This showed his NFL training as a defensive back. I didn’t know if many boxers learn to run backwards at such speed, but that is what defensive backs do most of the time.
They have to be able to keep up with sprinting NFL receivers dashing down the field while running backwards to watch the QB and where the pass may be going. Carl Weather was a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders during the 1970s, where he only played 7 games before being released and moving to Canada to play for the BC Lions until 1973.
Though he wasn’t a major star in the NFL, his training as a defensive end in college and a linebacker in pro got him in shape to play the iconic role as heavyweight boxer Apollo Creed in 4 Rocky movies before they killed off his character in Rocky 4.

It was a wonderful turnaround, and makes the following movie even sadder. Yes, of course, the original is a classic, and rightly so, but I just love the progression the third movie gives us.
