I'm an old fart. Which means I was 9 years old when Rocky debuted in theatres in 1976. I went to the movie with my parents and I loved it. I still remember the adrenaline rush. I remember distinctly being affected by the music. When Rocky hits the top of the stairs and is jumping up and down to the chorus hits the heights, I've never been more inspired by any movie ever. And I love that Rocky loses. Even as a nine year old, I knew he didn't really lose, because he hadn't given up, and kept getting up.
and if that isn't the ultimate metaphor for life,
    then I know nothing.

@@willowwookie9614 Yup, on Canada's 100th Birthday. Given this is the year 2021, I'm going to go out on a limb and say, movies were better in the 1970's. I remember sitting in the theatre and watched the greatest films ever. I was a child, so these movies formed my thinking. I was terrified by Jaws, I was nine so you can imagine how my little brain dealt with the idea of swimming after that. I was afraid in swimming pools. Long story, but I overcame the fear. I was inspired by Rocky. I was taken far, far away by Star Wars. I even got a love for musicals with Grease. I began to believe after I saw Close Encounters. Even Superman had an impression and the best sports movie is Slapshot. Halloween scared you, and the Exorcist possessed you. I could go on and on describing 1970s film, because there's so much. So much originality, experimentation, creativity, and art, that today's movies are robots, or an artificial intelligence by comparison. They're like putting Moby Dick through Google translation into another language. Squeal after squeal, with no original concepts.
Oh wait, my son made me watch a new movie recently. It's been out for years but I can't take new movies anymore. They're brutal. However, I watched Parasite and my mind was blown. The director was obviously a huge Hitchcock and Kubrick fan, and it shows.
      Parasite is a film.
      Most movies today, are not.
      They're Pablum.
      Opium for the masses.

The first draft of the “Rocky” screenplay that Sylvester Stallone wrote was actually very dark, which is how most movies were during the 1970’s. In that version of the screenplay, Mickey was a very racist guy, The darker side of professional sports was explored, and, as mentioned by Minty, Rocky throws the fight at the end because he simply doesn’t want to live that type of life. I believe it was Stallone‘s then-wife who encouraged him to make it a more positive, uplifting film because she was so bothered by the darkness of the story.

  • @warrencdent

The actual reason Rocky ever got made is Stallone had an acting audition for a movie role, and tried out in front of the producers. They politely gave him the don't call us we'll call you kid, and as Stallone was turning the door knob to leave the room he thought to turn around and say "you know, I do a little writing" to which they asked him what he had. He pitched Rocky to them, and they agreed to meet with him to consider it. It's the greatest example of " you rarely get what you don't ask for" in history. He could have just walked out the door and been a nobody forever.

Awesome review!!! Saw this movie in the theaters when it came out in 1976. The audience was totally into the movie by cheering on Rocky and boo-ing Apollo Creed, and doing all the "boxing" moves in their seats like you were - was a fantastic experience back then.
Also, the "Rocky" theme song was so popular back then that you literally heard it on the radio constantly. Also, also, in NE Ohio & NW Pennsylvania where I grew up the theme song was popular that every darn high school marching band just had to play that thing at half time during whatever sporting event was going on - primarily high school football. BOTH opposing teams' respective marching bands would play it that it actually got to the point that ONLY the HOME TEAM was allowed to play that song.

I miss Philly in the 1970's , I can still smell the streets 😊the scene in the Italian market was done without a permit and the camera was hidden in a van and stallone ran behind and nobody knew who he was , the Turkey scene with Paulie , they had a catcher outside because they only had One Turkey and had to reuse it... 🍗

Great video Minty! I instantly fell in love with these movies when I was a kid and felt like I was able to connect with them immediately even then. I feel like these movies represent more then just the struggles of being an athlete, but all struggles in life and something I can connect with in any stage of my life!

There's a strange scene that should have been mentioned. The scene where Rocky goes in the middle of the night to the site of the fight the next day and meets the promotor is strange (who on earth goes in the middle of the night, gets all the lights turned on, and then meets the promotor by chance?). However it was stuck in because Stallone realised that the flag had the wrong shorts (as he says in the film). Due to time or costs they couldn't change it, so they turned it in a scene instead. Despite the bizarre setup it works brilliantly, with the whole 'it doesn't matter' talk.

Man you always find such cool facts on movies I thought I knew everything about. Though I did read long ago that Stallone was so broke before he wrote this movie that he'd sold everything - including his dog because he couldn't afford to feed it. And yes, he got his dog back. Looking forward to the next Rocky videos.

Rocky was also turned into a broadway musical but it only ran for 6 months on broadway it was nominated for 4 Tony Awards and winning one of them for best scenic design. Although it was a flop on broadway the soundtrack is actually pretty good it features songs from not just the first movie but as well as Eye of The Tiger from Rocky 3. The original songs in the show were composed by Stephen Flaherty and Lynne Ahrens and Sylvester Stallone was one of the producers of the show
