8 Best And Worst Things About Phoenix Point | Phoenix Point Review (PC)

  • Although it moves a lot like XCOM, Phoenix Point is packed with distinct features, from the Geoscape to advanced faction diplomacy. In this Phoenix Point review, we look at the best and the worst bits. Oh, and check out our Rock Paper Shotgun Displate store here: displate.com/rockpapershotgun...
    Is Phoenix Point worth it? We’ve got a full Phoenix Point review on Rock Paper Shotgun, but this is the video team’s impressions of the game. Having read mixed things from Phoenix Point Backer Build 5 reports (the last version released to crowdfunders) we had low expectations, but the release version is far from a disaster. As you’ll see from this Phoenix Point gameplay (PC), it hasn’t got the visual splendour of modern XCOM, but it has loads of great ideas, from combat tweaks - free aiming and action points - to massive trucks and the deep strategy of the Geoscape.
    Julian Gollop - the head of Snapshot games - knows his way around the genre (he invented many of its underlying ideas) and as you’ll hear in this Phoenix Point test, many are delivered with quirky twists. Due to the procedural nature of the campaign - you start in a different place on the globe, with random events to uncover - we wonder if Phoenix Point impressions might depend on how cruel or kind the game was to you. My advice: don;t freak out about all the flashing symbols and focus on soldier well-being and finding more bases.
    If you helped fund the game, we’d love to hear your Phoenix Point analysis - does it live up to expectations? After writing this review, Matthew realised he had a big XCOM shaped hole in his life, so he’s glad that it got made.
    We hope you enjoy this Shenmue 3 review. If you have any questions not answered by the video, pop them in the comments. Want to know which research to prioritise? How to build out your squads? Perhaps we can guide you to some of the features the game doesn’t explain that well. May you want to know how long is Phoenix Point? And if you enjoy this PC review, why not watch more. Here are some picks from recent months:

    Thanks for the review Matthew! Waiting for the bugs to be ironed out sounds like a good idea for the moment as I still have bad memories of my neverending turns in XCOM2. The manual aiming, destruction, faction systems all sound great but the art style of reminds me too much of XCOM 2 as I was hoping for a little more grounded look and the lack of an interactive looking base is kind of a missed opportunity.

      "interacting looking base" omg you should have seen my face when I saw THATS how they made the bases interior look like... my disappointment was immeasurable. NOTHING screams more as a missed opportunity on this decade that the fact its almost 2020 and we CANT still do a nice proper base management like x-com made in... 1995 -_-

      Ay, to me it seemed that they took everything good or just acceptable in Xcom and stepped it up a notch or gave it a different spin. Really refreshing. After going thought Battletech that kept it very close to the formula I started to lose hope that this title would have anything worthwhile to offer. Really surpassed my expectations.
      I heard there will be at least 3 DLC, maybe 5, so the game can only get better. I enjoyed XCOM immensely and still do. But it seems there is a new king on the throne.

    You should have mention the fact, that sometimes gets a bit annoying the two exploding worm launcher giant creature, who prevent your every attempt to go further, while at least three mind contolling head hugger, running towards your men, and of course, the "unbeatable" enormous jumping crab that can eliminate your soldier in a single attack, while your entire squad needs about 8 turn, to make it even bleed.

    • @chaospilot2142

      I never had trouble with the big crabs. You just need to know how to manage them. Try shredding their armor with one or 2 heavies first and then use virus weapons. That way the crabs will panic and be of no danger to you for the rest of the mission. Alternativly you can use acid weapons and just wait 3 rounds till the crab is dead.

    Cool. I backed this baby as the OG X-com is my fave game of all time and I even liked the firaxis remakes. I’m maaayybbeee 2 hours in and I can see myself restarting as I have backed myself into a corner. I know this is not really in the game but the fiction created as backstory on the games website is amazing and very well written. It really does pull you into the world they have created. I prefer the free aim and the move away from % to hit. overwatch (the go to start in Xcom ) is still your friend but has major drawbacks and over reliance will get your soldiers very crabby(?). Spoilers.........
    The mutations are a neat touch and have some Interesting implications in the story I suspect.
    So far I am really enjoying it and can see my self doing some very bonkers future playthroughs.

Though I've heard that the AI isn't that great and you did touch on that by saying they lacked creative approaches with all this game appears to offer. I didn't think the AI was noticeably bad - some of the stuff I've read about AI making pointless moves (wasting turns climbing up buildings only to jump down, etc) don't reflect my experiences. There's a bit of unbalance in that certain units are way deadlier than others - the sirens, for example - but I've generally been constantly challenged.

    I'm downloading it now and was a backer - I confess I got a bit worried by backer build 5. It was very repetitive, which can be a hallmark of these types of games, but without any of the story (or, that is, anything to give me a reason to do basically the same missions over and over) I actually got a bit bored and stopped playing after ~10 hours.
    Also, I seemed to level up my squad really quickly, but it wasn't clear if there was a real point to the science / tech tree. I did a lot of research, but it never really seemed to give me any new cool toys to play with - it felt way too slow compared to the character leveling.
    One thing I did find frustrating in some of the backer builds was the accuracy of the aliens. My guys weren't able to hit the broad side of a barn (even with me carefully lining up the shots manually) but aliens were basically one-shotting me from across the map. It was particularly frustrating when they did this as response actions. They seemed to fix this in later balancing, but it's a shame to hear it's quite buggy (I had the save bug in backer build 5). I noticed lots of hitching in your footage and it looks like they've not fully addressed the poor performance issues that have been there since the first builds either.

    • @rockpapershot
      @rockpapershot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, squad levelling is quick, especially once you've got training centres at the base - you can just leave rookies there to quietly improve in the background. And the research seems more connected to buffs than equipment - the best new toys come from faction alliance or raiding rival labs. And yes, it is quite repetitive at a core level, but I enjoy the core combat enough that it kept me engaged. I wish I had played backer builds to offer more of a direct comparison.

Also it’s annoying how your guys automatically open doors when they stand next to them

    I would love a game with 4X level of complecity of the global map, but that plays more like X-Com, i.e. not building cities / civilisations and dominating the world but being a faction with a specific goal embroiled in a certain story.

      @jawnatawn804 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Age of wonders planetfall 👍

    • @Medytacjusz
      @Medytacjusz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jawnatawn804 not really, it's Age of Wonders, there's story but you're still building cities and conquering the map pretty much. X-Com proved that there could be more creative mechanics to the overworld map.
      Also another element of X-Com style that I like - the enemy is unknown (pun intended) and totally unlike you and the game is a process of discovery - who they are, what their aims are, what arsenal do they posses, how to defeat them. In 4x including Age of Wonders the enemy is just another faction like you. Because 4x are often balanced around the possibility of multiplayer whereas X-Com-like goes all-in on single player and there can be total asymmetry as the other faction is not designed to be playable.

    12 hours in one day. Can't wait to go back to it.
    The overwatch is a little twitchy. I've had it not trigger once or twice - which is annoying. I've also had a couple of the larger bugs clip through scenery and see things , and attack things they shouldn't have.
    But that's it. The interface is clean. The gameplay depth is a full notch up from the Firaxis games. Not original Enemy Unknown and not Terror from the Deep complexity and micro management, but certainly quite a bit more to do both tactically and strategically than XCOM 2 vanilla.
    And there is the rub. I've got well over 1000 hours in XCOM 2 - but maybe 50 in the vanilla game.
    I would not play the XCOM 2 vanilla game now - at all - even if the DLC's and mods did not exist.
    I run with Long War and about 25 other mods in XCOM2. Making enemies tougher, allowing for A LOT more customization in characters, adding to the research tree etc.
    This game starts from a slightly better footing then XCOM 2 which was buggy as hell on release. PP has a few bugs but nothing like my first 8 hours with XCOM 2
    XCOM 2 in 6 months grew into a great game, and 2-3 years later is a brilliant game. Firaxis approach to DLC and allowing modders to add so much by opening the game up to them means despite being - what - 4 years old. I still play a full campaign through once or twice a year with new mods and new personal objectives.
    PP would benefit from the same developer and community love - and I very much suspect it's going to get it.
    But as it is, the first 50-80 hours on a vanilla play through are well worth the cost.
    Remember this is a 2/3rds priced game a $40 not a $60, and as such I think, if turn based tactics is your thing - it's an absolute must. Deserves
    Oh - even on normal difficulty it's a LOT tougher than XCOM2, and on harder it will challenge all but the most hardened players. Use those level up AND Phoenix skill points, equip those grenades, research those better weapons and armour. You're going to need every bit of it.

    Backed the game since the beginning... didn't like the backer beta actually but the finished product is in such a state of awesomeness I can't stop playing. There are rough edges for sure and for sure we all think Julian should/could have made something that feels different from 2K XCOM but imo he took the best of XCOM and X-COM and UFO:AFTERMATH and gave birth to a game which gave me what I loved in all 3 previous series. And yes, free aiming is the master touch of this title for sure and a feature I suspect is going to be copied by many many games in the turn based genre to come.

      They are... Old. Quite damn old. Both were released in 2004.
      But Silent Storm allowed you to literally shoot out small gaps in the walls. stick a gun through them and keep shooting. And one of the mechanics there was "shooting on sound". So if you have a gun, that doesn't have trouble penetrating walls, you could just lay down fire on the approximate location of the enemy. Also, it was quite weird semi-futuristic take on the alternative history of WWII.
      Perimeter was more of a proper RTS, but one of the core features of the game - you could shape the map while you're playing. Have a mountain range in the way? Flat the mountains. Have a huge flat land, that's hard to defend? Make some artificial mountains! A whole lot of enemy buildings clamped together? Destroy the terrain right under them.
      EDIT: Also, one some maps in Silent Storm or with some powerful weapons, you could tear down buildings like it's noone's business. That worked both ways. Some stray bullet hits explosives two stories under your sniper? Part of the building collapses, your sniper falls down, takes damage and now has no high ground. At all.

    I was really hoping this one would have turned around more since the backer builds that made me get a refund a bit back. It's got a lot of neat ideas, but hopefully they'll have it figured out by the time the real release rolls around. Until then, You mentioned several mechanics early on that Xenonauts, and by extension, the utterly amazing X-Division Mod did years ago. Things like super satisfying, crushy vehicles, and in the mod's case, extreme flexibility with your movements. For anyone curious, the Xenonauts 2 folks have been taking some pointers for finding a middle ground between XDiv and the original XCOM feel, which was ultimately what got me super hyped for that one over this. Just saying, for anyone that missed it that feels bummed right now, give X-Division a try, it's amazing.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ouroldhouse3674 I mean like X-Com with Final Mod Pack, with a few neat tweaks that could be considered comfortable to NewCOM. Stuff like being able to suppress with missed shots, using shields, getting group morale bonuses, tearing off armor with repeated shots, and having certain weapons shoot into an enemy's TUs (Shotguns and SMGs have a sort of Shock and Awe effect). It's basically an amalgamation of everything I've ever wanted in an XCOM game, though obviously tastes will vary. It's just an awesome mod that never really sits in one place too long before throwing something new into the mix.

At least, now, with the Community Edition. The original release was a tad scary. Plus side of the whole situation there is that Xeno 2 seems to be actively trying to find the middle ground between the grim remix of XCOM of Xeno 1, and the complex sci fi soup of XDiv. So far it's promising, but still far from ready.

PP feels on one hand far more grounded, while it also looks more interesting from a strategic POV on the other.
