Obviously i didn't notice it as a kid, but the switch from zac's speaking voice to Drew's singing voice is so jarring that it pulls me out of the movie. Even if zac couldn't hit the notes they wanted him to hit, why couldn't they get someone that sounded similar to zac?

There could be one of two possibilities:
1. No one who sounded similar to Zac but could sing tenor instead of baritone was available.
2. Disney probably knew that viewers of High School Musical couldn’t distinguish Zac Efron’s and Drew Seeley’s voices unless they went online to see if there was a video of a side by side comparison of Drew Seeley’s and Zac Efron’s voices. Hence, no one worried about it.

@@caleguillory5451dude come on lol. This movie was filmed in Summer 2005 and TH-cam launched in Feb 2005. Disney def didn’t bank on people making comparison videos especially back then YT was so rudimentary
Disney just assumed no one would realize which is the truth. It wasn’t until I learnt someone else sang it that I noticed

I think the reason why Disney assumed that no one would realize the truth was probably because even though Drew Seeley’s vocal timbre and range were different from Zac Efron’s, the voices sounded similar enough that no one would notice. I know I didn’t notice until after I read about it.

Those movies were years later, while he was going through puberty. No - he wouldn't have been able to hit the notes needed in the 1st movie.

They should’ve rereleased the movie but with Zac Efron’s singing voice so fans would know how he actually sounds like singing!
