The scene that leads up to this number makes this song even more powerful. Like Roses Turn from Gypsy and And I'm Telling You from Dreamgirls. Both great numbers on their own, but when you see the build up it's gut wrenching.
I saw this production four times and had the pleasure of seeing him for my birthday that year. La Cage will always be one of my favorite musical comedies of all time with a score that delights as much as it touches your heart. Thank you so much for posting this Spiderwoman!
What a joy this production was! As a young gay person who wasn't out yet, I felt an immediate connection to Albin and his insecurity that I wasn't yet able to identify. I'll never forget Dale Hensley, the u/s who went on for Harvey, who blew the entire audience out of the water. Any chance you have "A Little More Mascara"? What an identity affirming number! :)
This is incredible. I am currently playing Albin and I’ve been looking for this performance. Do you happen to have the whole show? Thank you for all you do!!
and the payoff for that line really comes in the song. Why did I not "get" that until I saw the writer, Harvey, play the part? Well talk about clarity of meaning!
He´s not handsome, too fat, can´t sing or even move properly but what is there not to love about him?! His facial expressions are out of this world. As a gay man who has his best years behind him (as a performer) I feel everything about Harvey IS Albin. What I wouldn´t do to just have a 5 minute talk with him ... Can´t find the right words to express my admiration.
Harvey pretty much owns the part. The intensity of the perfomance is just astonishing. Beautiful!
God bless, Harvey Fierstein, now and always! A human treasure!
Was lucky to see him (and Douglas, too) in this wonderful revival. Loved Harvey’s performance so so much.
Honestly, my favorite version of “I am what I am” EVER! Quote me on it.

I had the privilege of seeing Harvey in this production - an afternoon I will never forget! Thank you for reposting this.
It’s the hardest possible thing to not love Harvey Fierstein.

One of the best revivals of recent years. Douglas Hodge was great, and so was Harvey.
Literally cried my eyes out im what i am is so beautifull.
I. Love. Harvey. So. Much.

Brilliant 👏 ❤❤❤❤
My ever the most favorite movie is "Torch Song Trilogy", I fell in love with him then and forever, and I am a straight woman. He is the best.
VERY good wow

I Would Love To See Harvey Play Mama Rose In Gypsy.

What's he saying when he's bantering with the audience?
Man and woman in one person.
Revival...too soon?
Probably no revival for a while, as neither of the two Broadway revivals was a financial hit, although both won Best Musical Revival Tonys.
With the current political climate, it feels like the best time for a revival
Is this a human? It looks like a cross between the Sea Witch and Devine. But that voice!
