Tim Otters loves his Volvo, and he loves torque! So naturally, building his 1980 242 comes naturally in his 41 years of ownership. In this video he tells us all about the build: Swapping the original B21F after 480,000 miles of reliable driving for a B21FT 2.1 liter Turbo engine, then building it out to a 2.8 torque monster.
TEST DRIVE: • POV driving a Widebody...
    Some details:
    Widebody volvo 242 flathood
approx. 350 horsepower on 15 lbs of boost
    1982 B21FT, 96mm stroked to 2.8 liters displacement 7.0:1 compression
40 mm exhaust 46 mm intake valves on a ported head and manifolds
    Eaton M122 Supercharger
    Solid driveshaft
Rear Axle 9 inch by Strange Engineering extended to +2 feet over stock
6.5 ft wide rear track with wheels an 275 tires
Transmission Tremec T5 with T56 gears (5 degree angle cut) from Pro Motion (Florida)
Mustang FR500 9 inch front and 11 inch rear wheels
Simple Digital System SDS engine management control
    Hella Rallye 2000 fog lights
    Stock air conditioning system!

I am impressed with people who really know and understand how these motors work and are able to make the run for all they’re worth. I had a 74 164e/BW auto when I was in college. It’s torque really came on strong at 3000 rpm and I wanted it to be fast, but in the mid 80s there wasn’t a lot of knowledge base I could draw from. The service manager at the one Volvo dealer in town, and his son played with carbed 164s with manuals, and knew how to make them run but didn’t seem inclined to share knowledge. Anyway, I couldn’t afford to play with cars at that point in my life. Regardless of my own experience, I appreciate these cars. They are unique in their own right. And yeah, the rear bumpers do take a lot of abuse.

No disrespect to Tim, as I love his engineering ingenuity... and I'm sure that beast is a blast to drive! But damn is that thing ugly. lol... It's kinda like someone that can built a kick ass house, but you don't dare leave it to him to do the interior or exterior designs. Tim might need a little help in the design aspect of that poor car. As I said, no disrespect. ;)
