- In this episode, I'll be unpacking some of the results of the peer-reviewed research described in the article, "Aspirational pursuit of mates in online dating markets" (link below). After analyzing the private, anonymous behavior of hundreds of thousands of heterosexual men and women on a popular dating app across four independent metropolitan areas, the researchers discovered a number of surprising (but consistent) findings. Don't you think men like younger mates for youth? Looks?
I can see a huge problem with this study and with the conclusion you drew in another video.
It’s problematic to compute a single attractive score across the age groups. There are many desperate professional women in their late 20’s and 30’s. Their standards are (unreasonably) high. It is very possible that they select established men in their 40’s and 50’s. The younger women probably care less and probably pick guys for fun. So men’s attractiveness peaks at 50 possibly for only women older than 28. But since there are so many of them clicking on tinder, even though their average attractiveness is lower than that of 18 year olds, their number skews the result in favor of the 50 year old established males.
It would be great to compute a pair wise score between age groups.
A man walks into a gym and asks the woman at the desk which machine he should use to impress the ladies. The woman said use the ATM that is just outside the door.

Rollo Tomassi breaks this down pretty effectively in my opinion. But it’s worth noting that women of different age ranges value different things, whereas men of all age ranges consistently value two things: 1. Youthful looks and 2. Loyalty/fidelity. Women aged 15-23 typically value physicality and looks in men more than anything else which is why the first guys they go for are douchey jock types. Women 24-30 go for guys that have a mix of looks, status, and game. Women 30+ go for men with status and money so it’s not surprise that age 50 was listed as the peak attraction period for women as women 30+ are a majority of the population. I promise you that an attractive 18 year old girl will pick the starting quarterback at her college over a 50 year old billionaire nine times out of 10.

As a 49 year old man thats about to turn 50 my options and access to women are almost unlimited. Guys, life is about standing the test of time so if you take care of yourselves, dont work yourselves to death and learn from other men's mistakes so you dont repeat those then when you get to middle age you will see how calming, peaceful, easy and freeing your life will be. Probably you are somewhere in the Western world, correct? Plenty of divorcees and second-divorcees. Go to Eastern Europe, for example - and dating options for a 50 year-old are very close to zero - ALL women are hitched at that age, married with children. I don't think I've ever met a 50 year-old single woman of Eastern-European origin. Other ages women - you might think? Sure...usually women in this region get married towards the end of University [which virtually ALL of them attend] or just after - meaning around the age of 23-25. So any women older than that - is already taken. The "leftovers" - trust me - are leftovers for "a" reason [actually many, many reasons, speaking from personal experience]. Women under 25? If you are 50? Don't be silly...they see you as a father-figure at best, or "creepy old man" at worse :)

@@ThePompeii The problem is you're looking at the *average* 50-year old man in such situations, and you have to keep in mind that the largest majority of men do *not* actively do (or have done) anything to fully maximize their potential...
Just like if all you do is look at current statistics, you'd find the large majority of the population is overweight, not physically fit and on very bad diets... so mortality rates will reflect this directly.
But what of the people who decides to exercise regularly and follow a heathy diet?
Do they not stand a better chance at overcoming those stats on health and mortality?
It's really the same exact thing here... those men who work hard to improve themselves financially, physically and socially *always* stand a much better chance at a successful dating life than *most* men who take very little to no action in these areas of life.

Yes. It's odd that it seems so many people are hard struck on this idea that what they think is ideologically correct to them is somehow in alignment to what they want through their actions and behaviors. When it's very rarely in alignment at all.

Still depends on the overall attractiveness of a man when he hits 50. Guys that have taken care of themselves (no alcohol, good diet, rest, exercise, emotional maturity) are killing it these days with women in their 20’s.
My advice to guys in their 30’s, start NOW in regards to taking care of yourself. It will pay off when you hit your 50’s.

From my own personal experience being in my late 40s, good looking for my age, fit, succesfull (not rich though) , I still get the attention of a lot of younger women. That being said they believe I'm younger by my looks (usually I get 35), when I talk about my real age things get weird/awkward a lot of times - so saying that you're the most attractive to women when you're 50 (assuming you look that age) it's a far stretch imo, unless you're a very high status/millionaire man ofc

@@bob15479 I mean I've read about different studies that say that men peak at around 35 from an overall attraction point of view, like they're still not old and they should have figured out their lives by then. That being said I'm almost 50 but because I look quite a bit younger I stil get to enjoy the gaze of younger women and some, not knowing my real age, have actually told me that they'd never date a guy in his 40s even because it's kind of gross and he's an old man (their words) hahah

Age 33ish (depending on how fast you age) is the peak for most men.
Young pretty girls (which I assume we are all chasing) want a man who still looks like he can perform well in bed, that still has some money to spoil her. So even at $150k, she’ll date you if you spend most of your paycheck wining and dining her and you’re still somewhat young (early 30s).
By 40, you’re literally trying to bribe them into sleeping with you since you look older and there is a smaller class of women who may go for that, but it isn’t many.

This data was collected by analyzing data apps. The reality is a lot of women between the ages of 18 -25, honestly even late 20's will use these dating apps as tools to find a sugar daddy. If I were looking for a sugar daddy, I would focus my attention on men between the ages 40 - 55 because I am aware I have more power over those men due to my looks and youth in comparison to them being old and financially stable.

Nothing is hard in life with discipline and the right mindset. Losing weight is fairly simple and can be easily reached within a few months or years. However, it will get easier with every experience you make. Men most popular at 50 is pressumably due to "left over" women in their late 30s, early 40s dating up.
Women most popular at 18 is due to men dating down and the legal age for using the app being 18.
To be useful, data would need to be presented by age range. i.e. what do women 20-24 go after, etc

I think that would have been a very defined point if that was the case.
There's a third path here. Not just what men want in private and what men say, but what men take action on in social settings. Maybe a 50 year old man is privately attracted to an 18 year old, but in an actual marketplace, he'll feel awkward about pursuing her. So an interesting study would be how social factors shape our choices even when they may be against our ultimate desires.

It does not say 50 years old men are messaging 18 yo girls. In fact, it says 50 years old men are the ones receiving messages, instead of the ones sending them.

There's a great book titled "The Evolution of Desire" by David Buss that explains all of this perfectly. Long story short, men value traits associated with fertility, including beauty (hence why women wear makeup), youthfulness, and feminine personality traits. Since a woman's biological clock typically expires in her mid 30s, men want a woman that has a high probability of giving him offspring, hence why they're attracted to younger women. On the flip side, women are attracted to a man's height and physical stature, his resources (mainly his finances), and where he stands on the totem pole. With the exception of his height, all of those things increase as a man ages up until hes roughly 50, hence why women are attracted to older men.

I have somewhat similar experiences. I had always trouble finding girlfriends in my teens and early 20s, and it only changed after I became a fairly well known music artist in my country that brought be most of my girlfriends.
Now as a 40 year old, I still get matches (and dates) in dating apps with women from 20 to 35.

Thank you. Women aren't looking for guys who are younger or the same age as themselves, with one exception : social value. In other words many young women are attracted to alpha men who have high social value. The more mature and masculine a man is the more attracted she is to the guy. Physicality is an important trait, but not the only one.

There's another way to look at this. A stunning woman in her early 20's might want a mature man who looks past her physical attributes, which is rare, in any case. If she's a hard working person, she may want his love and knowledge more than his money... To make this work, gentlemen, you must have a great body and personality + be on point in every way. Pass all her tests and with patience the two of you have a chance.
Thanks for making a content on peer-reviewed research on dating topics. It's easy to generalize observations by common sense but it's always refreshing when content creators back them up with actual data. One takeaway though: could the nature of engagement in these dating apps act as an extraneous variable in the study? I.e. People could have various motives for dating online. Hookup culture as a motive is quite prevalent in these apps. Is there a significant difference between men and women's motivations? If so, can we say that men are more interested in looking for younger sexual partners among females but would prefer to have older females as relationship partners? On the contrary, are women more interested in looking for older men as relationship partners as they are more stable and can provide for long term needs? I think sexual desirability connotes a myriad of underlying motivations, not just physical in nature.

I'm not sure if you follow up in a later video, but do you mention which factors they tracked in terms of "attractiveness" for men and women? Other than age, of course.
Has to be financial success because that's what eliminates the young men most of the time. They don't demonstrate competence so they aren't appealing.

I'm a 55 YO man, and this gels with my life experiences (in my case I think the fact I've continued to body build consistently since I was 19 helps a lot, but older body builder me is more successful than younger body builder me).
What's the youngest woman you've managed to pull?
Women don't give a sh!t about body building. Do you pay attention to them? Pay for dinners? Buy gifts?
One important thing to understand is, that the gender demographics change drasticly around 40 years of age. Where only 25% of the users are female among younger users, the gender distribution evens out at older ages and as far as I know can even reverse in some dating sites and apps.

As Dr Taraban says, i) people often are not even aware of what they want or prefer; and ii) people's responses are heavily influenced by social desirability biases. The great David Ogilvy put it best: 'The trouble with market research is that people don't think what they feel, they don't say what they think and they don't do what they say.' Brilliant!! 😁 [NB: I think that this phenomenon deserves a special episode by itself].
Age is just one factor in a decision regarding what may be attractive to any one person. That said, an 18 year old woman may view a 50 year old man as being old as her dad (eww), and a 50 year old man may view an 18 year old woman as a sexual conquest, but not someone he'd seriously consider spending time with because of a lack of common interests and experience. So the respective ages of maximum attraction don't meet up in the real world.

I found those results for the women's side to be pretty much in line with what I would have guessed as men view women in terms of beauty and youth so it makes sense, also sadly for alot of women in today's modern day world of dating, so many women are unaware of this and don't realize how staying single well into their late 20s and 30s doing their own girl boss thing can end up having devastating long term implications because as the data for guys show, men actually get more preferred as they get older and the women are on the opposite trajectory so the men in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are single, can and often do look for younger women. I was also really amazed and shocked at mens peak age being 50, I found that pretty incredible just how inversely correlated the trajectories of the two differ. This is also why today so many younger guys [teens, 20s and even into early 30s] often struggle to gain approval from women their own age because women prefer older guys, it's harder and harder to date nowadays at the same age, you are seeing more early 20s girls dating guys in their 30s, women can easily jump up a decade or two or even three and that leaves alot of younger guys struggling to find that age bracket where they can date.

I think it's 30 for men. To say it's 50 is nonsense. I think this study is misleading. And the reason I say it's 30 and not 25 is simply because 25 year olds can get younger girls than 30 year olds but there is simply a larger population share of women past 22 than below within the population of women that take part in adult dating and women always want a woman who is a couple years older. In a 30 year old man's case, there are a lot of hot women in their 20s for that 30 year old man to date, even though they will be less hot than the 25 year old's options, though the 25 year old man has such a narrow slice of the population that want him. Most 19 year olds won't date a man who's 30 but 25 is fine. Most 18 year olds want a guy usually no older than 21. Most 20 year old women want a guy up to about 30 maybe. As for the 50 year old man, he's sought after most probably by women 35-50 years old, and this is an even wider age range, but who the fuck wants them? For that reason, I say it's 30 for most men. The reason I say most men is because most men never strike it rich. Well, I don’t know too much about that show but one thing I’ve observed: by the time a woman is old, she’s taken care of a husband, children, her own parents, her husband’s parents, and usually some neighbors or friends of her parents. No regrets, of course it feels good to take care of others but when we’re old it’s finally time to do some things for ourselves. What is it that you're really asking? Personally I prefer women from my own culture, i.e. women who eat meat like I do, and who like traditional food like I do. This is extremely important for me because I don't want to be surprised by "exotic" traditions or differences in my daily life; things I don't understand, or cultural problems or confusions I have to think hard on solving. Even dating a vegetarian is a strict no-go for me.
For some reason or another vegetarian women seems to really love me, but it's a hard pass because how can I ever enjoy a simple meal with such a woman? How can I raise children with such a crass moral difference in our lives?

Usually, desirable remains desirable over time. This study has only short term mating people in its sample so it is not a reliable assessment of desirability.
Some people are at their peak in their early twenties (for a multitude of reasons they suit youth) and then go to pieces - but this is equally true of both sexes. Slightly more for men, if anything, because they are less likely to look after themselves.

I think the problem her is the word 'attractive.' A man might be more attractive when he is 50 because of the money and experience he has- but general attraction is a lot different than carnal attraction. Also- one has to wonder if this increase in metrics for attraction that happen to men in their middle ages has more to do with women's depleting value than a man's increasing value. In other words, because the amount of men a woman will attract at 35 is so much lower than it is at 21- she is forced to consider men that are older. Therefore men in their 40's and 50's get swiped on a lot.
Think of it as the nursing home effect- because there are so many more women in a nursing home typically than men (women live longer) a man who barely ever got noticed back in his 20s might be getting more female attention than in his whole life before. The generalisation about age decreasing a woman's attractiveness is only true within that woman's timeline. When compared between woman then it breaks down. There are plenty of twenty year old woman who are less attractive than 30 or 40 year old woman. In fact if a woman is deemed attractive in her 20's, say she's a 10/10, then in her 30's and 40's if she looks after herself, she can still be roughly at 10/9 or 8. A woman who is a 6 in her 20's if she looks after herself isn't going to be more than a 6 in her 40's.
All that is true about attractiveness, but keep in mind that even the most unattractive woman in her 20's will *still* have that edge of having her reproductive "energy" on her side... a 30's or 40's super-hot woman just isn't going to have that.
Hey Dr Taraban, this is really surprising info. I expected the perceived desirability of men and women to be closer. Maybe that men are seen as most desirable at 40 and women around 25.
Do you think this data is very US-centric? In parts of Europe, like the Balkans (Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania etc.) men often marry women who are significantly younger but they are usually quite well established by their mid 30's so they can support a young woman and a family. They are also usually still quite healthy. The 50-60 year old Western man is generally not that attractive; usually with a beer gut, bald spots, weather worn skin and yellower teeth. Does a woman *really* love a man like that or is it something else.
Additionally, an 18 year old woman is *really* young. Can a 50 year old man enjoy any degree of stimulating conversation with her? Is she a gold-digger who will divorce him in 5-10 years? Can her body endure the rigours of regular sexual intercourse and even childbirth? Is such an age gap wise?

Thinking about the future, hard to date. When I was 28 I dated a 28 year old and she respected me and my values, easy to talk to and compromise, was thinking about family. She’s beautiful, wasn’t permiscous and very caring. She is the best mother to our children, and loyal. There’s a few things I would do differently looking back dating for sure, but if I have a good relationship with my children I will be able to teach them what wasn’t told to me and what benefits them benefits me.
