Conductors actually need to know how to play 4 instruments. Since violin’s rank is high I’ll bet any conductor knows how to play one, including piano and a few other instruments. How do you lead a whole team of musicians if you don’t know how the instrument they are playing works?
For this, you need to have experience playing the -1st violin part of Bach Double -2nd violin part of Bash Double -conductor experience -concert master experience and the ability to mix them all at once Good luck!

Wow, what a difference in sound the violin makes between the principal 2nd's violin and Ray's Strad. Not saying the skill of the player isn't important but it's clear that the sound quality literally changes from an amateur to professional sound between the two violins. It really is night and day. Never realized the importance that a strong violin brings for the player.
There's also the fact that you'll have a better playing on your own instrument. Also this violin might not be a violin for soloist (I don't know how to say it otherway in english) so a violin with a stronger and higher volume output, so you've to find other way to make the violin sound loud enough and that impact the sound ^^ but yes for sure, the Strad sound so nice. The principal 2nd violin must have been "Am I playing on... a STRAD?!!"
