“Love & Hip Hop” Star Amara La Negra Is Calling Out Racism - And Colorism

  • It's a scene all too common in the entertainment industry: A male producer tells a female musician she needs to change her appearance in order to be successful.
    This time, when the interaction unfolded during the premiere of VH1's "Love & Hip Hop: Miami" on Jan. 1, the female artist pushed back.
    Dominican-American singer Amara La Negra walked out as her male castmate made racist comments - that her Afro wasn't elegant, for example - and instantly put herself on the American pop culture map. She announced she signed with the record label BMG, and landed an appearance on the widely-syndicated hip-hop radio show The Breakfast Club.
    During that interview, she again shot down ignorant comments from the hosts, who asked if she was imagining the colorism she says she's always experienced in her community because she has dark skin.
    "Being a Latina that looks like myself in the Latin industry is very hard," Amara told VICE News. "And I never would have imagined that talking about it would open this worldwide conversation."
    Now, she's getting ready to record her first album and take her shot at the American market - while promoting her underrepresented Afro-Latino culture along the way.

    I'm latino and the colorism and racism is so real. If you look indigenous or black you are not as worthy as a white skinned Latino. The community loves making fun of dark skinned Latinos which is disgusting. Latinas don't look like jlo or shakira they look indigenous.

      Eugene Fisher well, I am definitely not colorblind. I think this person is by all standards very beautiful lol. I see every shade of her black skin. I think all skin colors are beautiful. I am not colorblind, I try to see every color. No one is inherently ugly or beautiful because of their skin color. Societal standards try to make us believe so though it’s all man made.

    Explaining colourism to non whites and racism to white people is beyond pointless. Reading the comments is exactly why colourism is so overlooked. Because alot of people are willfully ignorant. As soon as you talk about issues you face. it's race baiting and playing the race card. The fact that people think discussing discrimination, racism and colourism is racism itself . Shows me how much people are living in cloud cuckoo land. I'm glad i'm not white or any other race because life has taught me to be humble and empathetic to others. I can't imagine having my head to far up my arse that i was willfully ignorant of other people's struggles and experiences. *The fact that non blacks are telling black people their experiences and feelings are non existent is why the world is so fucked up. People are too quick to silence you, instead of listening and having empathy*. Anyway Good for Amara La Negra. And i'm glad i never have to associate my time with the arrogant losers commenting.*

And this is coming from a dark skin black girl. She's not trying to do this to gain popularity... She's just trying to shed some light on the issues with colorism.

      LuckyNinjeStar She's already had a shocking amount of success in the US. It's the latin market (which is notoriously, blatantly racist) that she's struggled in.
      Latin America is more racist than America, and that seems to correlate with the success she's achieved in either market.

    • @HollyandChanel
      @HollyandChanel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Green Gob Invalidating others' experiences gives losers a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. They hate themselves, and love to bring negativity onto others. Luckily, Amara seems to be succeeding despite the people that refuse to comprehend her story.

    • @Bsouls5678

      She's been doing this since she was in diapers, so I'm sure she knows that she needs to grind in order to be big and success won't be handed to her. But colorism, which she has had to deal with, is a very real, not only in Latin America but all over the world and among many races.

    You guys are missing the whole point of what she is saying. The entertainment business in any culture do prefer white or lighter skin women. She is very beautiful and talented. She has a multi million dollar deal. It's important to her and the black latino community to speak about it because she is a black Latina that has been discriminated and still will. She is not making it up, she is not jealous. She is speaking reality and truthfulness. You can't keep people quiet if they are being disrespected.

    growing up in south LA the colorism was much more rampant among the black community than anywhere else. While i wasnt part of their community (being white/mexican) i had a front row seat to their own prejudices racism and colorism. Im glad this sentiment is finally leaving our culture but if she wants to change minds she needs to start with her own. When she gets the full support of the blacks and latinos the change will happen much faster.

      and centuries ago blacks sold each other to white slavers for profit. Are we now discounting the underlying roles and problems in the black community because white people? I really am tired of hearing the excuses, everyone has a role to play in the racism and colorism in our society. My point was that it is much more prevalent in the black community, white people dont really notice as much the difference in shades. Black people decide who they like and listen to they decide who the next big thing coming from their community is and the rest of the country usually goes along if they are a decent choice. if these people are having problem coming up because of their shade of color. you should be talking to the people who are there from the start to launch their careers it usually isnt white people.

    Here's what i don't get... Dark skinned Latino. In Latin America just like North America.. You have Black, White and brown and all the other colors.. When did the word dark skinned become a race and this is from an Afro Cuban who is black.. Just say I'm Afro Latino who is black period.. What is with all this Dark skinned shit.. Natives Latinos will never speak out for black Latinos, White Latinos will never speak out for Black Latinos.. When people say Dark Skinned is like they are dancing around the word Black.. in Latin America who say such words, its just like the USA Blanco or Negro.. Black or white

      TheGuitarLadd notice how you mentioned MEN and not WOMEN. Women have a harder time getting recognition into their work. When youre BLACK and a WOMAN the stacks are more against you.

    • @TheGoldenChile
      @TheGoldenChile 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can mention women too, Tina Turner, Pam Grier, Betty Davis, Grace Jones, Aretha Franklin, Jada Pinkett, Angela Basset.... just the tip of the iceberg. I mentioned men because I am a man, so I will gravitate towards male talent. Not to mention that men are vastly more competitive and will battle harder against their competitors. But you can make the argument that in a patriarchal majority white country with European standards of beauty you will have to work harder to achieve substantial fame and success as a black woman. Thats to be expected but hardly anything to cry about. La Negra is a hack, her music is terrible and all she has going for her is a meticulous caricature of Dominican women and a stunning appearance. So I dont buy her narrative.

    What is "underrepresented Afro-Latino culture?" Is there a Euro-Latino of Asian-Latino culture? I am Afro-Latina as in my phenotype is more of African descent and ethnically of Latin American descent. Latino culture is a mixture of various "old and new world cultures." Many people confuse Latino as a race but it is not, it's an ethnicity as in a cultural grouping. Amara is not saying she is of a different culture she is discusssing how her looks affect her and millions of others within Latino culture. As a matter of fact much of popular Latino Culture is based on the creativity of people of African descent (dancing, instrumental music, call and response singing, 5 de Mayo- the Black liberation of Vera Cruz Mexico from the French colonizers). The US American view on race as culture has placed limits on the US American ability to understand the rest of the Americas.

    A Mohawk is a culturally significant hair doo as well, but a guy rocking that hair style is marked as a rocker regardless of thier lineage correct? I don't think there is any difference here we all decide what is popular, or elegant, not the individual practicing a thing. I may well suck that a style is looked down on, but we can't just socially engineer a super star, because it wouldn't be genuine, or ethical. We have to accept that people are people, and that they form social groups that are exclusionary. That shouldn't stop intrepid souls from picking a style they like and bringing it with them into the workplace, but we also would buy a car from a tattooed; pierced ; stereotypical Vikings wearing a suit, so we gotta take the good with the bad. With pop culture we often see the repetition principal in practice, I think this serves to homogenize society making us more complacent, however this is not moral or ethical because it is controlling the masses, here is a link explaining the repetition principal changingminds.org/principles/repetition.htm
    My point is rock it girl take the hate and power through, but it may well be a fruitless endeavor, so don't corrupt yourself in the process. Have a good day and rap on my friend.

You have to understand that you are the reason why the creator send warnings for,we have to inform our generations in order to prepare for worse events because not pessimist,things are going to be worse for everybody,and it will be even deeper for us! We need to get back to our roots and understand they manipulate us,and how to deal whith so much conspirations against us! We need to focus on us! Its not selfish its just the truth! Everybody is thinking about the future of his people why are we just there observing crying whithout bigger guns? Guns are not just material we need to work on us,we need to educate and build our defense system. And as you could have realised it! We have to unite!
