    Part 2: goo.gl/iCCnM4
    Part 1: goo.gl/q72mbx
    -----------------------------------------------------
    In this clip, Amara La Negra went in depth about the racism that plagues the Latin community. She talked about her mother being criticized for having a child with a dark-skinned man. Amara also said her mom's friends would often discourage her to date dark-skinned men in an effort to "better the race," while also not ruining her potential children with overly Black features.
    Amara La Negra also took time to shoot down the Blackface claims while also diving into some of the nuances of racism and colorism in the DR.

      millyionnnn , latinos dont keep nothing like this behind closed doors. Unless you are Argentinean who's population is almost 100% white. Or mexican where there's no african decendancy as in most indigenous ancestry countries in south and central America, we embrace our african heritage and ancestry. I wonder if she knows that the dominican republic ( where i am from too, and i am light skinned, but not white ) is 70% black. That the ppl that have this views, are a very minuete group. And not the way she's trying to put it out there. And once again, wrong or rt, or 100% wrong it goes on aaall over the world where there is a mixed color, or multiracial population.

Which really piss me off because I don’t see color defining a person or peoples. All non white people who suffered under European colonialism were taught to hate themselves and love the oppressor. People of African descent want to be light with silky hair. Asians want larger eyes and have surgery to do this. They also marry white to change their children's features. The funny thing is whites want African features darker skin, fuller lips and bigger behinds. At 18 when I became fully aware of this madness, I learned to love myself as I am. I embraced my Haitian heritage, love my chocolate skin, and my natural hair. There is nothing fake about me from head to toe. God made me in his image and he did an excellent job.

Just know how to handle it in sections 💙 I'm proud to be black because i dont hold myself to European beauty standards anymore.. My mother used to want to relax my hair and use creams to make my skin lighter. The side effects were horrible.. Hair falling out if i go in the pool and my skin used to be uneven.
      *Tbh im glad i stopped and love my black skin for who i am*
      Im 19-Jamaican/Trinidadian American.

A lot of comments I read and stuff I’ve heard makes me think Latinos/Hispanic folk really don’t know much about their own factual history...they just know what they heard word of mouth. I'm Haitian and I'm soooooo happy she didn't try to cover the self hate Dominicans have and the hate they have towards Haitians....meanwhile we occupy the same island. Our history is so layered. I remember when I went to DR with my best friend (who is Dominican) they absolutely refused to believe I was haitian according to them I was too light. BUT I stand in my Haitianness proudly and wouldn't deny it anywhere.
    I love that Amara stands in her Dominicannes AND her blackness something a lot of Dominicans refuse to acknowledge.

    • @Pepe-em9gj
      @Pepe-em9gj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      avionics i'm actually lighter than what this picture, it's probably because of my curly hair but that's my whole point. The first thing in your comment was about my color. The WHOLE island both Haiti and DR have every shade. I have members in my family as light as caucasian, caramel like myself, chocolate and dark chocolate. That's the benefit of being black...we literally come in all shades and being Caribbean is just a bonus. So happy we dont have colorism blindness in my family.

    • @Pepe-em9gj
      @Pepe-em9gj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      avionics but yeah they told me that and I was just in Punta Cana and i was speaking Spanish so I can see how they would think I was but once i told them i was Haitian they just wouldn't believe me until one of their coworkers who is Haitian told me he was too. When we started speaking our language that's when they finally believed me. It's just sad to see a whole nation of people deny their roots because of European brainwashing that pit us against each other. Despite all the bad press Haiti gets and how bad the country may seem there are good parts and a beautiful history. I can stand proud as a Haitian because I know my history. I have family that own businesses there, in politics, my dad used to play for the national team in the 70s etc. But enough of my rant.
      My best friend is Dominican so I know there are some good ones out there it just sucks that we're on the same island and let a lot of outsiders pit us against each other to where you have two black nations colonized by different European countries literally pit one against the other yet they got the slaves from the same place. For dominicans to literally hate Haitians based on skin color is sick because just like black comes in every shade in Haiti...black comes in every shade in DR.

    • @Pepe-em9gj
      @Pepe-em9gj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's also pretty funny you say i'm pretty dark to you (which was probably meant as an insult) but looking at your pic we're damn near the same color. And let's be real if I was standing next to Amara and neither one of us spoke without hearing our accents you'd think she was Haitian and I was Dominican based and he being dark and me being lighter than her

    Amara this interview bring us almost into tears for at last being heard! So real and clear in the true version of the type of stereotypic arrasment to us who are black hispanic. We are Panamanians, but Caribbean descendants and there are lines between black and brown, divisions between afro caribbean and afro latino, being a latino vs a black latino, its really crazy and sad!. But true word Amara, aqui la gente se autocondena, pretende ignorar su raza, menosprecian sus raíces y todo empieza con una muy mala enseñanza en la crianza. Hopefully almost all here are bilingual, estamos contigo Negra te amamos!

    Im African American and Im in my 30's and even in my lifetime this is how people complement me: oh, you're such a pretty black girl, you are a pretty dark girl, you're a nice looking chocolate girl. I always find those compliments interesting although when I was younger I appreciated it very much now that I am older I see the madness that is behind labeling my beauty by my complexion. I have never in my life heard someone say to a lighter person oh you're such a pretty light girl. It's as if being dark and beautiful is a rarity. I accept every compliment and I still say thank you but with a different understanding . This mindset is not just in the Latino community by any means it is a general and widespread mindset that lingers anywhere that colonization and other types of Oppression existed. Things are changing and has been changing for quite some time but it's definitely still there. The same goes for our hair types. If your hair has curls or loose waves your hair is considered pretty if your hair is thick full end poofy it is considered nappy what makes one hair good over the other it should just be different but people will compliment you and say that you have good hair if you have curls. It's quite a mindset that needs to be changed

    The Brown Bag test was very true and real. It happened to me in grammar school. Some girls would not accept me in the club because of my skin color. Ironically, few of the girls were darker than me. It also happened at family reunion with certain family members (especially with my light-skinned sister with wavy hair). My mother used to place clothes pin on my nose to look straighter; and the book on my head to walk with my butt in. My butt couldn't stick out. Of course, I can't forget the hot pressing/straightening comb. . It affect me for many years along with the self-hated. Amara is speaking the truth. It is about looking more white European. Good features: No nappy hair, No broad nose, No dark skin. Today and still, I love my blackness and Africanness, regardless of who loves me or not. I will love me.

      Michelle Forte Very true! When we're in the sun the most is we'd just get darker(Taned) but white people BURN 🔥 Like i had my friend with a sun burn.. I was scared like wtf? I never seen a sun burn before till then. I may have 4c Hair which is thick af but its long and it shrinks when wet but im very happy with my "Nappy" hair cause it doesnt shed like wypepo hair does.

    This is true in Latin America and South America. That's how Brazil was to solve its race "problem", through intermarriage. As you can see there are still Blacks all over South America. And if you study these countries, you'll find that most Blacks (economically) at still on the bottom. The same thing is true in India. This colorism was established during colonial rule. This whole scenario reflects the people in power. They set it up that way. And as long as Whites rule, it ain't going away.

      Indians Did 7-Eleven I respectfully disagree. Not ALL blacks are doing bad. Unconscious Bias and Systemic Racism will have you believe that is a Fact. Celebrating and embracing our differences is a beautiful thing; however, tearing someone down (not saying you did this) based on the color of their skin is prejudice and unproductive

    I'm glad she's coming out and saying what she's saying. A lot of Dominicans, puerto ricans and other latin speaking countries and cultures are racist against blacks and even their own who are darker skinned.
    I have experienced this many times living in the bronx.
    They think they are a step above the black race but when treated unfairly in society they group themselves with black folks.
    I'm not generalizing , but lots of them are racist and it ain't hard to see it when you meet them, go into their establishments or have to interact with some of them.
    It's brain washing at its finest.
    They all are a mixture of races (Black, native indian and europeans) that happen to speak the language of their colonizers.
    But they rather identify and want to be more like their colonizers. (White spaniards)
    Hilarious.
    Why would I want to be like my former oppressor.

    col·or·ism
    prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.
    "colorism within the black community has been a serious emotional and psychological battle"
