General Spoiler Warning to begin as we will be discussing events from across the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Had they been forgotten about? Left behind? Thrown away like a plastek minature because they were no longer seen as powerful enough to stand up to Chaos? These thoughts invaded the Lamentors mind as the chainsword in his hand sputtered in desperation to stay on. His name was a struggle to remember now, and he could barely remember his own fallen brothers names after the battle with Slaneeshes minions on an Agri World. He knew the crops nor its people wouldn't be safe.
The soil was too polluted with radiation from the demons, and its people crying out for food and salvation rose in a maddening chorus. The symphony of voices pounded his skull in fury, each voice blaming him for ruining their world. And he accepted that. And he knew it wasn't his fault. Before the demons came, the World was already loosing too much nutrition in the soil in order to effectively grow crops, and the people kept on planting anyway trying to keep the quota up.
He could hear someone approaching him, and turned around to see a person in a large tattered trench coat wearing a gas mask and helmet, each step causing them a great deal of pain. He saw the gas masked person stand in front of him and saluted with great respect and reverence. The Lamentor returned the salute in response. The Death Korps of Krieg.
"Child Judeau.....sends you this gift.......sir." The Grenadier rasped, their hands shaking as they handed him a small envelope, and the Lamentor knew the Grenadier was dying. Dying and still trying to fulfill his duty to the fullest extent while he could. The Lamentor opened the envelope to see a small note, with the words barely legible "We love you."
The Grenadier struggled to breath, and despite all the effort he made to keep standing, he sank to his knees and felt cold metallic hands wrap around his body. "You did well." The Lamentor praised, and then there was a sudden snap and the gas mask slipped off completely.
The Grenadiers face, a mere child of 17 years gazed at the blue sky and heard...something approaching him in the distance. For some reason, he knew it meant him no harm. He listened, listened with all his might and heard a deep voice whisper in pain and regret "I forgive you."
The Grenadier could no longer smile, for that had been forgotten. But he tried anyway. He knew he had seen other people do it many, many times, and the Lamentor wept for the child in his arms and for the child that sent that letter.
    It was a beautiful smile.

Glad you took this last episode to show the ones who fall as heroes but are not thrown up there with the known legends. Almost every Astartes is a hero story just ended earlier.

I kind of want to write a short story a Lamentor getting a gift from a Kriegsman because his Comissar wanted to make a small child's wish come true. Anyone want to read it?

Shroud of Night was the first 40k novel I have read and man everytime I read a new 40k novel I compare it to that but I realise that I can never find the same joy as reading the tale of Kassar and the Unsung I hope we get a sequel to it I always thought the ending was the funniest
Captain: U r from the heretic astarteas of the alpha legion who are very well in secretive operations
Kassar: Captain we are from the Inquisition have u seen or heard any information about a alpha legion warband in this world?
Captain: Yea ur right let them in to the ship
God what I wouldnt give for a sequel

Again, a son of Dorn shows why they and their Primarch are the first among the loyalists. Also it would make sense that if he served in Imperium Nihilus behind the Great Rift logically it would make sense some chapters would have their forces split in two and would effectively with time grow into two separate branches of the same chapter. If both groups were large enough to survive on their own.
