There’s always one young kid who is wary of the foreign man. Remember my niece being in total fear of me, then she became my little shadow. Always found people around the villages very welcoming. Friendly, fun, happy people.

I'm 82. When I wake up each morning (and after each nap), I marvel, "Oh, another day." And I smile at the discovery. I prefer to believe that the last time I will wake up, I will be able to pass through the "Pearly Gates" of Heaven. Then, I will be able to spent my moments in my God's Heaven, and also being able to be there in Heaven AND on Earth at the same time with my loved ones in both places. I know it sounds a bit childish, but now I like to think that my loved ones, who have already passed into Heaven, are with me here now and are with me each day. It's a very warm and peaceful feeling.

Damo and Ryan, thanks for this lovely glimpse of the villagers near to your home. This is so typical of the villagers here in rural Thailand. Where my father-in-law lives in a small village near Chum Phae, they are all farmers and their daily round is always the same, but for the most part they are happy and live long unless the Lao Kao kills them first. Possessions aren't everything and although we westerners aspire towards riches, they are meaningless when it comes down to it. Provided we have enough to eat and look after our family, what more do we need apart from the vital ingredient of love and community. God bless you all😀❤🙏

Probably the best vlog you two have made so far. For us, institutionalised Westerners, we have been taught that success and happiness are defined by the amount of material belongings we own. As farang we are curious how simple villagers can possess so much inner peace and happiness with so little. In fact, it's becoming trendy to adapt to a " Minimalism " lifestyle for Westerners as a way of coping with a money hungry complex world.

@@lifeinruralthailand a quick update: I have now used it to teach my youngest nephew chess, although it struggled with knight (It kept putting the English word 'night') , used it at the barbers and quite a good chat with him. Today, my wife arranged for an ambulance charity to turn up at ou home to accept a donation, so again, it came in handy, although a couple of mis translations did get some big laughs, all in all, a useful tool to carry with you.

You two are a lovely couple! My wife is Thai-American, was born and spent her early childhood in Thailand but grew up in the U.S. I believe she retained her Thai citizenship when she became a naturalized U.S. Citizen. Now the children are almost grown I am trying to convince her to move abroad for a time. We have both lived abroad before (England, Channel Isles, Japan). Do you know if it would be relatively easy for us to move to Thailand due to my wife’s citizenship? Obviously I need to learn Thai. 😂 I have a brother who has lived a very similar lifestyle as you and your wife for 20 years in the rural Philippines and has been very happy.

If your Wife is a Thai Citizen you can get there on a Thai Marriage Visa. You will need your Western Marriage Certificate translated to Thai and quite a few other Requirements. But Thai Nationality doesn't expire and Dual Citizenship is allowed by the Kingdom of Thailand. Do some quick Google serches and you'll have all the info you need sir.

I'm impressed with the accuracy of the translation. It would be great if it worked for the Lao Issan dialect and the Upper Khmer dialect (often known as Khmer Surin) as well as other minority dialects too. Khmer Surin and standard Khmer are sort of mutually intelligible but they are quite different in terms of sentence construction and vocabulary. What a fantastic language learning tool too !

Though I would wear a mask and eventually was of the few Ty had my Pfizer vaccine I didn’t feel welcomed when shopping in a local ma &pa shop. At banks ( waiting for my queue number to be called) no Thai would sit near me 555 Very superstitious and simple minded so I had to not take it personally. ( But it didn’t keep the neighborhood leader from NOT coming to my house ( 1km from the village) to collect 300 baht for a funeral collection though I didn’t know who these people were.

Im sorry that you feel that way but pls understand that during that time vaccine wasnt provide to everyone yet and also most of thai people in rural area live together as a big family and they eat altogether at home.If one fimily member got covid it would cause big problem in the family(it took many people live especially the senior members that they love) Thai people have to change the way of life also during that time. my family always have dinner together but we had to eat individual food and not be able to eating together.

It is the same in rural Bali where there is not much exposure to anything other than their close family. That is OK, but the problem I see is they don't get much education and proper dental hygiene training. The diet here consist mostly of GMO white rice, little vegetables, fruit, and way too much processed foods and sugar. Everyt hing is deep fried in palm oil so that is why diabetes runs rampant. The doctors give out antibiotics like candy. And to get something stronger than paracetamol for extreme pain is a huge deal. You have to go to a doctor, and many drugstores don't carry what you need. They do know how to chase dollars from the tourist though, and the price goes up every year. So much for the land of the gods!

I’ve never had a problem in any village in Isaan besides the young kids being shy. All the adults and middle aged kids no problem. Actually they all want to chat with me. But my Isaan/Lao/Thai isn’t good enough for conversation.
