The Pickles I was just going to comment I hope this week ends with a full lp of Xenogears. I need some of that "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!" shit........I NEED IT!
If you guys don't play an Armored Core game for Mechaweek I won't forgive you. It is literally one of the biggest hypest mecha franchises out there. All of them are kind of amazing in their own way.
I remember the glitch during cutscenes Woolie was talking about. You can spin around, switch weapons, and even fire your weapon in a lot of cutscenes. You can actually blow yourself up in a few cutscenes if you have a rocket weapon and are in a confined space.
Ed Lopez I watched it recently and well... I does leave a lot to be desired, mostly because it couldn've covered what it covered a lot better had it been a series of OVAs rather than a single movie, but that's just my take on it
I had JOKED with two other friends of mine who watch the channel about getting to see this. I love this game so much and you all so much for playing it and I haven't watched it yet and I'm almost done ranting. THIS GAME CAME OUT IN 1998 AND SUPPORTS WHATEVER NATIVE RESOLUTION YOU HAVE THAT IS THE HYPEST.
2:08 Ah yes, Oni. Alone in my room with my PC Gamer magazine. That artwork with the strategically ripped body suit. Teenage boners aplenty. Thank you Bungie, for such a wonderful game that I've never played.
wait. waitwaitwaitiwaitwaitwait. You're fighting the fallen, in a boring empty landscape, with a WAY oversized laser gun, and don't really care about the plot? Is this game Destiny's grandfather?
I bought this game in a set with Septerra Core back in the day, omg. I LOVE this game so much, I just can't even describe how hype I was when I saw you guys play this. I wish I could still find my copy! I'd love to play it again myself!
"Yes sir; you are my personal hero, sir!" "Ryu's gonna die and it's gonna be bloody." At least two quotes from this game that have stuck with me for years.
"They got the joke of anime before people knew what anime was." I'm not sure how it was up in Canada in the late 90s (I do know you guys had Sailor Moon before we did) but here in the US anime was already taking off by 1998. The Toonami block was airing on Cartoon Network and Gundam Wing was one of their biggest shows (they got the voice of Optimus Prime himself to do the awesome trailers leading up to the premiere, and he stayed on as Toonami's regular promo guy), and I think Evangelion was gaining its American fandom around this time. So technically this game was just hopping on the "anime in the West" train right when the train was early on the rails. Two other western made games I can think of that also capitalized on the popularity anime (or at least anime style) were Septerra Core on PC, released in 1999 (which was also trying to capitalize on Square's success in the west, the character designs are clearly trying to mirror that of late 90s Tetsuya Nomura, and it uses a variation of the ATB battle system), and Sudeki on the Xbox, released in 2004 (when anime was at an all time high in the west, especially with both Toonami AND Adult Swim's anime block going strong at the time). Fun fact, Sudeki was made by Climax, the same guys who later did Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.
Gundam Wing didn't air until 2000. Same year Tenchi started to air. Before that it was all throw-back 80s and early 90s shows like Voltron, Sailor Moon, DBZ and Robotech. Things didn't really get balls out ANIME until like 2003-5. I mean, 1998 was when people were still referring to it as Japanimation and it was the kind of thing people traded fandubs on VHS tapes.
nesagwa (LONG COMMENT WARNING) Ah I did make a mistake about Gundam Wing's air date, my bad. To be fair though, both Voltron and Robotech were on Toonami in 1998, so at the very least people like me (kids around ages of 7-12 in the late 90s) got introduced to mecha anime around this time period courtesy of Toonami. You are right though that anime REALLY blew up in the US around the early to mid 00s though, thanks to Toonami getting higher amount of newer programming (which arguably started with DBZ and Sailor Moon in 1998), and Adult Swim airing mostly-uncut "adult oriented" anime around that time. The anime market in the US kinda saw a dip in the late 00s (around 2008) because of Toonami's cancellation, big name shows like Naruto going into boring filler, and Adult Swim began bickering constantly about how anime wasn't pulling in ratings similar to Family Guy re-runs so they cut back on how much they showed, and not a lot of it was considered particularly great. Funimation was one of the few companies really trying to keep anime alive during this time. Toonami's reinstatement as Adult Swim's anime block has been helping regain some new interesting in anime in the States, to the point where Space Dandy, from the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, actually had its episodes air in the US first, and the block has been getting a lot of high profile animes like Attack on Titan and Kill La Kill (along with some reruns of old favorites like Gurren Lagann [originally aired in the US on Sci-Fi back in 2008] and DBZ Kai). BASICALLY, anime in the US started off slowly uphill in the late 90s, hit a nice peak in the early to mid 00s, went on a downhill slope in the late 00s, and then the early 2010s it began recovering. Still it's fun to remember that "initial craze" that lead to assorted American media adopting anime tropes and artstyles, like Teen Titans and Avatar.
BloodRedFox2008 My bro in law introduced me to Fist Of The North Star and Vampire D in 1997 when I was 11. Also DBZ aired in the states about a year later. Dragonball aired in the mid 90's here.
BloodRedFox2008 Adult swim anime was really good in the late 2000s. Like 2009-10 they were playing 2 episodes a week of fma brotherhood, durarara fooly cooly and cowboy bebop which was what really exposed me
I remember getting this and Septerra Core from Office Depot over a decade ago from their small game rack. I loved that this game had multiple endings that stem from well before the ending unlike more modern games.
NewTypo Tried reading a Mazinger manga. But, I got terribly lost. The main character's grandpa goes nuts, turns himself into a robot, tries raping the dude's girlfriend, dude dies, resurrects after combining with Mazinger, I don't fucking even.
It's too bad the recent Heavy Gear games have all their emphasis on arena combat- the universe and most of the mecha designs really lend themselves to mass combat with multiple combat roles. I also always liked the way that gears were usually no match for tanks or air support. Many things about Heavy Gear feel a lot more believable than Battletech.
TheInflicted The last HG I played was #2. I think that version ruined me for other mech games. After that, I played some Armored Core, but it just was never to the level of my experience in HG2.
Around 25:20 in response to the ghibli game thing: Hayao Miyazaki does not like video game adaptations of his work, as he feels they clash with the anti-war message of his films. Nausicaa had some shoot em up adaptations and that's all it took to convince Miyazaki to never allow this again.
Wow this is one of those games I remember my cousins playing as a kid but never knew the name of it, I only recognize it now because of the guns and city level. I feel a weird relief I never knew I needed or would have. Thanks guys!
Now I'm just imagining NRA Woolie holding the Parasite Eve Frankengun, while standing at a podium before a crowd of goo proclaiming, "from my cold, dead hand!"
Man I used to have this game this brought me back, also I wonder if we should put on Woolie's twitter "When's Dark Souls?" or maybe "When's Dahrk Souls?"
T_T I thought I was the only person on this planet that knew about this game. I was so happy seeing this in my sub box. Damn man even in the early days of youtube you couldn't find this if you searched for it -My First wasd game -My First game I played with cussing and blood -My First FPS I love you guys
15:46 Matt - "Imagine if Gentarou went to space" You say that Matt but in Kamen Rider Fourze the main kamen rider is gentarou and he loves space and their base is on the moon
They are knocking it out of the park with the intro music for this series! Here's hoping we get Stand up to the Victory or Tatakau M9 for one of them! But for real, pretty much any Gundam opening would work pretty well for the intro, except maybe Anime Ja Nai, but that doesn't even go with ZZ so whatevs.
I wish I was good at drawing because I really want to see fanart of a mech with dreads that is similar to woolie and a mech that has a beanie sort of hood for a head for Matt. But mostly a mech with dreads, adding dreads to anything fiction just makes it cooler.
Still can't believe that Monolith could do the OG western animu vidya and then do the spoopy masterpiece that was F.E.A.R. (the first one, not the sequels)
The Pickles For me it's more so I just want more games with a fast paced shooter gameplay that also involve mecha. Titanfall shouldn't be the only one doing it just like Mario shouldn't be the only platformer and Bayonetta shouldn't be the only spectacle fighter.
I always had two ideas I assumed were the natural explanation for criticals. First one being that you managed to hit a particularly vulnerable spot, you're bound to hit one eventually. The other being that you simply manage to muster more strength to hit harder. Like, if you ask me to punch a punching bag as hard as I can five times, I imagine I'm not actually gonna be able to hit equally hard each time. I think there's a lot of factors included in these things, timing, stance, etc.
Pat's personal mecha should just be called The "John Leguizamo-Killer" or something with a "Smoke Crack, Kids!" message on it. Also...What a mysterious Shogo :)
You guys joke about giant rat mechas but I remember back when I played MechQuest as a kid, there were goddamn Pizza Shop-themed Rat mechas. You could even buy weapons based on the pizza shop too, like Pizzaroni Missiles or some shit.
"I have my orders, please be nice to me." Might now just be my favorite thing ever spoken by an NPC grunt.
I'm definitely gonna use that line if I ever join the army.
Broly-Chan
Oh, hey, it's been a while, Broly-chan.
Yeah it has, I do watch the videos but usually I don't have anything witty to say and just go back to my hole.
This game is chock-*full* of amazingly cheesy dialogue. The developers knew it, the small fanbase knew it, and everybody loved it.
Shogo, Blood, No One Lives Forever, Condemned, F.E.A.R. - Monolith was always my favorite developer, man. They're the reason I even program.
Any other Monolith fans out here? 'LITH REPRESENT.
Holy shit! I miss Shogo so much!
Avp 2 and the surprisingly great tron shooter :)
Blood was technically 3D Realms. Monolith bought it when it was almost done
I’m in the process of trying to get Shogo to work properly, so I can then *become* a Monolith fan.
god F.E.A.R. is so good
That NERV poster had PERFECTION literally written on it. Tells you a lot about where the creators were coming from.
Nadesico music for the intro? DAMN, YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF.
I swear if I hear like, Getter Robo or Gekigangar III or, heaven forbid, HEATS, I'll be done and happy.
This is all leading up to a full play through of steel battalion... for the kinect.
The Pickles No it has to be kinect steal battalion or it's just not even worth it.
Yes x9,000!
The Pickles I was just going to comment I hope this week ends with a full lp of Xenogears. I need some of that "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!" shit........I NEED IT!

I only played nine breaker on the ps2 and I thought it was alright. Which one of the newer games are you talking about exactly?
gyrobasel Probably ACFA. That was epic.
From From Software.
Swordswoman th-cam.com/video/M66PMn8BdMEN/w-d-xo.htmlot just any Armored Core game. The best one.
This was literally the first M-Rated game I ever played when I was 10. My god the memories. YOU GUYS ROCK
This game perfectly treads the line between parody and so-bad-it's-good.
i rather play games like this over movie games on the playstation
Main char is EXACTLY the kind of guy to go through the trouble to operate the second arm to look cool with a knif
I remember the glitch during cutscenes Woolie was talking about.
You can spin around, switch weapons, and even fire your weapon in a lot of cutscenes. You can actually blow yourself up in a few cutscenes if you have a rocket weapon and are in a confined space.
Nadesico is soooo good.
GEKIGAN PUNCH!
NewTypo I hated that movie though.

Yes, indeed, what a mysterious Shogo...
The intro to this game was amazing, still is.
the music in the intro for this one feels the most appropriately matched with the art/animation imo
I SWEAR!!!! If there isn't a new RE episode tomorrow...I will just watch whatever is uploaded instead
2:08 Ah yes, Oni.
Alone in my room with my PC Gamer magazine.
That artwork with the strategically ripped body suit.
Teenage boners aplenty.
Thank you Bungie, for such a wonderful game
that I've never played.
It was really Goddamn hard, and had very technical controls. The mechanical depth of the combat with kind of astounding, though.
Dat Intro Song, THANK YOU WOOLIE, we need more Mecha Week, EVERY WEEK.
wait.
waitwaitwaitiwaitwaitwait.
You're fighting the fallen, in a boring empty landscape, with a WAY oversized laser gun, and don't really care about the plot?
Is this game Destiny's grandfather?
No, see this actually has a plot. Totally different
The one big difference there is that this was made, it wasn't put together with tape once everyone started to leave.
Also there IS a plot here.
"Imagine there was a Zelda game that was like Mononoke"
Thank you, boss.
"There's too much interaction in this world of Shogo"
What a mysterious Shogo.
''there's never been a been a Ghibli game. I don't count the Ghibli game''
okay, Matt.
Oh my god, so many throwbacks to SICK aaaaaaaaaaanimess
I bought this game in a set with Septerra Core back in the day, omg. I LOVE this game so much, I just can't even describe how hype I was when I saw you guys play this. I wish I could still find my copy! I'd love to play it again myself!
Damn. So many callbacks in Shogo. I love this damn game.
The dudes at Monolith were such otaku. I wish I could've played NOLF, though.
"Yes sir; you are my personal hero, sir!"
"Ryu's gonna die and it's gonna be bloody."
At least two quotes from this game that have stuck with me for years.
omg, i had no clue they did a video on this game

I loved that this game had multiple endings that stem from well before the ending unlike more modern games.
This has always been one of my favorite games. I'm glad someone gets it.
"Why is this more Sonic than Sonic!?"
Shogo Boom! Shogo Boom! Shogo Boooooom!
Shogo was awesome back in the day, so many mechanics... har har.
We need more giant mechs with nipples.
Push the nipples for Wrestlemania.
Wasted Potential I'm just saying! Why can't we have some anatomically.. mechonomically.. Mechs with Laser Nipples!
Epitaph of Gungnir Hey, I'm on your side! If we can have Batsuits with nipples, why can't we have Mecha-nipples?
Epitaph of Gungnir
You're going to love the female mechs in Mazinger then
NewTypo Tried reading a Mazinger manga. But, I got terribly lost. The main character's grandpa goes nuts, turns himself into a robot, tries raping the dude's girlfriend, dude dies, resurrects after combining with Mazinger, I don't fucking even.
YES!!!!! Loved this game. Still have the disc. So we're going to see some Heavy Gear 2 right?
I'm right there with you, love this game, still have the disc and dying to see Heavy Gear this week.
***** I was more a Mechwarrior fan, but Heavy Gear II was amazing. It's too bad the game didn't get more attention.
TheInflicted I played both because I have a horrible love for mechanized combat O.o

SHIT DAMN! im so glad woolie chose to play this hype ass game in the middle of a construction site! I love those hammering sounds
I'm from England and I need you guys to keep making jokes about this place! It's my favourite part of all your videos!
So this week got me to start playing Mechwarrior Online.....
....AND IM100% OK WITH THIS!

This game aged better than I thought it would. Loved this game!
9:00 Why is Liam not here to appreciate???
i know i´m late, but fuck it...
"what a mysterious SHOGO"
what a mysterious SHENGGANG
I bet Woolie was one of the people who thought a metal ship could never float. Dropping his monocle into his tea.
Alright guys, what is that fucking pounding sound at around 29:00 ? You can hear it really good at around 28:18.
Bones of Joel Nevermind, they said it was construction, sorry it was driving me insane and I had to know before finishing the video.
Bones of Joel Nah, twas Pat testin their autoblow 2
***** I don't know man, it had more of a hypnotoad effect on me. Thought it was going to program my brain to go kill all the pixels on Pat's 3DS.
That's the sound of someone trying to escape from the Woolie hole.
Shit Damn, sounds like a Bed Head is slapping against the wall periodically
Good lord the scanlines on that intro.
I keep thinking that, when you blow up a mech, you should stand in its smoldering ashes to regain your health.
The weapons in this game are very satisfying to use
The Wings of Honneamise had some of the best worldbuilding ever in anime. They even had their own spoons for god's sakes.
Now I'm just imagining NRA Woolie holding the Parasite Eve Frankengun, while standing at a podium before a crowd of goo proclaiming, "from my cold, dead hand!"
Fucking "Go Aestivalis" are you for real holy shit guys this is the best week
purposely making a game a anime parody is why i love [R.A.D] so much
This is one of my favorite intros!
A remake of this would be really cool
Man I used to have this game this brought me back, also I wonder if we should put on Woolie's twitter "When's Dark Souls?" or maybe "When's Dahrk Souls?"
Man, *fuck* Dahk Souls - when's Revelaitons!?
T_T I thought I was the only person on this planet that knew about this game. I was so happy seeing this in my sub box. Damn man even in the early days of youtube you couldn't find this if you searched for it
-My First wasd game
-My First game I played with cussing and blood
-My First FPS
I love you guys
I love how the foot steps are just regular steps on a hard floor that have been filtered slightly lol

Matt - "Imagine if Gentarou went to space"
You say that Matt but in Kamen Rider Fourze the main kamen rider is gentarou and he loves space and their base is on the moon
I heard that as freaking KINTARO, as in Mortal Kombat KINTARO!! Now I feel stupid because how the fuck does a tiger shokan even apply to mechaweek....
Is anyone else mostly looking forward to seeing what theme they use for each episode?
They are knocking it out of the park with the intro music for this series! Here's hoping we get Stand up to the Victory or Tatakau M9 for one of them!

PC seems to be getting a lot of love this week.
No complaints here.
Still can't believe that Monolith could do the OG western animu vidya and then do the spoopy masterpiece that was F.E.A.R. (the first one, not the sequels)
YES! i used to play this game all the time back in the day
I hope they will play Future Cop:LAPD. Loved this game when I was young.
If this game was about crippled robots would it be called Katawa Shogo?
Somehow, this game reminds me of Slave Zero on the Dreamcast.
'I have my orders, sir. Please be nice to me.' I'm going to use that.
I'm just starting this video. If they say, "What a mysterious shogo", less than 5 times, I'll be sending them an angry e-mail.
this whole mechaweek has to lead in to a playthrough of Zone of the enders the second runner!
This really needs a spiritual successor, and *Titanfall* alone is not enough.
The Pickles
For me it's more so I just want more games with a fast paced shooter gameplay that also involve mecha. Titanfall shouldn't be the only one doing it just like Mario shouldn't be the only platformer and Bayonetta shouldn't be the only spectacle fighter.
You ask who would run away and be scared inside a giant mecha, I can think of someone
I loved Robot Jocks as a kid sooo much.
seeing woolie run into everything makes me want to see woolie play scout
This has been a good series so far. But if I ever see a week of shmups I'll lose my shit.
I just noticed Liam's mech is called Full Metal Senpai. Nice!
I always had two ideas I assumed were the natural explanation for criticals. First one being that you managed to hit a particularly vulnerable spot, you're bound to hit one eventually. The footstep sound in this game is driving me fucking crazy to the point where i cant watch anymore
What is that incessant pounding?
shadowruler7 It's "that fucking dog". He's outside with a jackhammer trying to sabotage Mechaweek.
"Hey it's that dog!"
shadowruler7 it was ten minutes before I realized it was the video and not my neighbor.
Loved this game as a kid.
This really reminds me of Future Cop LAPD. I loved that game!
Tanegashi Machine-san is the true hero of mecha.
I usually don't do much mecha stuff. Anything less than ZOE is kind of boring to me, but this week has me hyped for some Ruck'm Suck'm Robuts.
YES! MOTHAFUCKIN' SHOGO! My brother bought this from a thrift store 12 years ago and I loved the SHIT out of it. THANK YOU, ZAIBATSU!
Also, SHOGO IS THE MOST MYSTERIOUS JOGO!
I can't be the only one doing the transformer's transform sound effect (80's version) every time Woolie goes into pod mode.
Why is this not on steam?
You can probably get it on GOG.com, most old games from GOG run much better than on steam.
Techno Mutant War Veteran It IS on GOG. Confirmed!
That one rocket launchers that shoots homing missiles REALLY looks like a Torgue gun
NADEISCO MUSIC /HYPE/ HOLY SHIT
That frequent knocking on the background that starts around 27:00 is driving me nuts.
30:55
Ok, construction working.
I thought I was going insane.
i played so much of the fury 3 windows 95 demo i think it was unhealthy ALL THE HYPE!!!!
Strangely enough, I still have my original copies of Shogo and Fury 3 on CDs.
Pat's personal mecha should just be called The "John Leguizamo-Killer" or something with a "Smoke Crack, Kids!" message on it.
Also...What a mysterious Shogo :)
They need to play phantom crash before the week is over.
The best way this week would end is a fucking Metal Wolf Chaos full LP!
You guys joke about giant rat mechas but I remember back when I played MechQuest as a kid, there were goddamn Pizza Shop-themed Rat mechas. You could even buy weapons based on the pizza shop too, like Pizzaroni Missiles or some shit.
"I don't know about sewers."
"I don't trust sewers."
"Giant rats piloting giant mutant crocodile mechs"
HAHAHA!
May surprise some of you that this was made by Monolith, who also made F.E.A.R. (the intro song to Shogo is even in F.E.A.R. 1 as an easter egg.)
childhood memories!!! Almost forgot that one!
