Dear FilmRiot, Could you guys maybe make a playlist with all your DIY tutorials. Not just because I am lazy but I might miss one or two. Much appreciated! Thumbs up so Ryan can see!!
I recently "re-purposed" a bit of kit I already had, to use as a camera rig, and was amazed at the difference it made to the stability of the shot. I recommend 'em :)
Thank you so much film riot! I have one question that may have been asked many times but i have not heard an answer: What ever happened to the old cast and crew of film riot and why did they have to leave?. We all miss them!
Looks really good, when the show started I thought you where just going to build the typical shoulder mount with 90 degree sections to hold the pivc pipes, but I have never seen the blow dry thing before,
You guys should do something like auctioning off some of your props and DIY things! The money could go partially towards you guys and partially towards a charity or something! I just randomly thought of this idea while watching this video! Thumbs up so they can see!
Awesome build Ryan! For those who don't have access to tools go to Amazon and type in"Cowboy studio shoulder rig" its 20 bucks plus shipping! Great shoulder rig (I own it), and cheap! Thumbs up for people to see!
I took two long planks and two short planks that I just screwed together, then I took sawed off chair legs that I screw onto the front to make handles, then for comfort I taped on foam in the back. It costed me zero dollars to make since I used old pieces of wood lying around.
If you take athletic tape and wrap the thermal piping cover foam with it, it cuts down on not only it moving, but it also cuts down any noise the cover would make and keeps it in place (I used it to pad a DIY Ring Light I made a while ago).
Never thought of warping instead of cutting! I just made one to hold my steady cam rig I made for my iPod! It's so light it's like I'm holding nothing!
I liked the back grip part of it so you could just let it hang there when you got tired. Also, for anyone who's getting into DIY film gear using PVC, I would really suggest PVC cutters, super cheap and makes cutting really smooth and clean.
A tripod has three legs (hence "tri") and a a shoulder mount goes on your shoulder (hence shoulder). Generally you will use a tripod whenever possible, but shoulder mounts are very useful for moving shots that you cannot get on a tripod easily.
I LOVE your channel and I just started watching it a day ago. My only complaint is that I wish you guys would focus more on the topic and less on the filler bits. I understand that you guys have to make money, but I'm telling you...It's your personalities, your amazing editing and your quick & to the point information that's getting you fans. PLEASE, less filler pieces.
Hey Ry, PVC Cutters at Hardware stores are like 5 bucks and work so freaking amazing. I use them on most of my DIY builds. You should invest in some bud! Hacksaws are from the caveman era :p Great Build thought and Imma hop on it!
Because we have no money, so we get the cheap, less effective stuff while the big boys who have money from us watching their shows get the better stuff to bring us this stuff. :) The circle of life.
@jms1295 I was actually surprised how steady the footage without the rig was considering he didn't use a sling for support. Keeping such a small camera steady while in motion is pretty much impossible.
I've been asking and looking around at where all the "work" is, most would say the US, but recently I found that they all want to come to Canada. I was thinking about Toronto, but someone told me that film is falling there and my best bet would be Vancouver? what's your opinion?
Hey FILM RIOT, I saw the movie The Rocketeer and loved it, but i really want to know how they did the flying around everywhere and going places so well. I know you have that other video when you guys are kicking people and flying but that doesn't seem to cover what I'm looking for. I kind of have an idea of how i could do it with a green screen but i would like to see it done by the professionals. Please i would love to see this effect carried out, Please! -Connor
Why not use pipe sections, T-pieces and 90 degree PVC bends. That killes the pain of heat bending. You can also try it all out for feel and then glue those together. Have some extra T-joints on strategic places to put on repositionalable handgrips.
hey ryan, I was wonderong woudld it be easier to build it with PVC connecters with an angle than heating it up? also could you show us how to make a zipline mount like what they use in the bourne films? thanks caleb
Here: anony(DOT)ws(SLASH)image(SLASH)kYq0 And remember that this was made in under 30 minutes after thinking of the idea and everything was made out of left over materials. I used some old planks, old chair legs, some left over foam from a broken sheet, I cut out some pieces and made three "pillows" out of them, I had some paint left from painting a wall and finally a little bit of black tape that I had lying around. The way you use it is by putting your head in the middle.
You know if you already have a tripod you can use that as a shoulder rig. Just close all the legs and stretch the neck to its longest. Attach the camera to the tripod and pan it to look vertically upwards. Lock the panning and tilting in the tripod put it on your shoulder and your ready to go ;)
@131rocketman um not, you really didnt get what i ment, it was ment to be like "looks at camera name" then im like what is that a Nikon ??!!? like wow he usually uses canon, and you dont need to get all aggressive maby you didnt notice it, i was just trying to be helping and it is probs a Nikon D7000 as that is one of the more pro nikons, sorry if i confused u, not angry now ? :)
Ryan please tell me do you compose your own music, or buy them or what ?? like the music in 6:35 it's really cool, please tell us how you get your music ?
@EnviroAda probably so. but that means more pieces to buy which means more money. granted it would not cost alot of money. but when you buy pvc pipes, like he had, you usually have to get it at like.. 10 foot sections so its probably cheaper just to bend it
hey film rioters! i guess i am not the first one to discover this, but you can use almost any better-built tripod as a shoulder mount! (I was pretty amazed when i discovered it :D
Ryan where did you get your quick release plate and what is the cost. I am going to build my own RIG soon. But I am using better materials (as I am studying engineering and I have access to all the needed tools/equipment and materials). I can't seem to find a decent quick release plate though.
What an awesome design. This was actually really easy (and fun) to build! works really well. Check out our build video if you guys want to see how easy it was even for some amateurs like us! We also compare it to a more expensive shoulder rig. Thanks Film Riot!
Hello Ryan, you mentioned at 7:26 an external monitor. I've been looking on the internet but can't find them. Can you tell me where to get one? Thank you.
Guys if you want an inexpensive stabiliser that works just the same use your own dslr tripod fold it up to its original position and hook the camera on then find a place to hold it and do some test shots. you will find that this works really damn good. there ya go you didnt spend a dime
Lmao this is like 10 bucks at most, and what if someone doesn't have a tripod? With this you're using your entire body to stabilize, not just the tripod's body.
Ryan when you want to apply a curve to a pvc pipe, before o heat it up, fill it with sand, and you will get a perfect curve, and the PVC pipe won't bend like that at 3:01. Vote up so everyone can see it!
dayyum, that looks really nice! a lot better than the one I made from aluminium pipes and foamboard! mine works fine, but it looks like something made by an orangutan using a knife and fork for tools.
i like how it starts out all bright and sunny outside at the beginning of the build and ends middle of the night.
Who needs Film School when we have Film Riot. Not that there's any Film School in Mozambique anyway.
You're wearing a Whiskey and Rye t-shirt! That's my guitar teacher's band!!
Dear FilmRiot,

I recently "re-purposed" a bit of kit I already had, to use as a camera rig, and was amazed at the difference it made to the stability of the shot. I recommend 'em :)
@jms1295 Nope, I was running and holding the camera out in front of me. And on the second I was walking fast backwards.
for some reason, i loved the cinematography in this tutorial!
"returning to the blow dryer on crack." lost my shit right there
You can also use boiling water to bend the pvc
4:14 I love how you hit him ''by accident'' LOL
I dont know about others but I think all commercials should be like yours...
I ACTUALLY WATCH THEM!! Shocker isn't it.
The production quality of this episode seemed more amazing than your already high standard!
Great show as always guys
Thank you so much film riot! I have one question that may have been asked many times but i have not heard an answer: What ever happened to the old cast and crew of film riot and why did they have to leave?. We all miss them!

6:12 That must be the best song I have ever heard!
If you take athletic tape and wrap the thermal piping cover foam with it, it cuts down on not only it moving, but it also cuts down any noise the cover would make and keeps it in place (I used it to pad a DIY Ring Light I made a while ago).
always great to see the DIY stuff.
Never thought of warping instead of cutting! I just made one to hold my steady cam rig I made for my iPod! It's so light it's like I'm holding nothing!
only this is going to make my movies better... love the other (both sholders) rig too, will try to make both. thanks a lot...
Omg I was so gonna ask for a video of this! Thank you FilmRiot!
Great tip, a very cost effective DIY thingy! Will share this with our community, thanks FilmRiot!
I liked the back grip part of it so you could just let it hang there when you got tired. Also, for anyone who's getting into DIY film gear using PVC, I would really suggest PVC cutters, super cheap and makes cutting really smooth and clean.

Thanks Ryan! Ive done a DIY glidecam thingy before, wasnt that great because of the weight :P but Ill try this one too :)
Awesome, I will need to make me one of those! Nicely done, thanks for making this!
"Once again returning to the blow dryer on crack" LMAO!
Ryan Film maker and handy man.
Cut first, then measure, I like your style ryan.
I literally just built one of these two days ago with the exact same materials and exact same design...Great minds think alike.
I know this video is almost nine years old now but I really like the music you used for your test shots lol
Where can I find that song?
Awesome video guys! Love the DIY stuff.
Ryan, you own some bad ass shirts.
I like making films and I' m studying to be an electrician. there couldn't be a easier build for me. thanks for the tut.
hey ryan, will you do an episode comparing the letus shoulder rig and this shoulder rig????
Hey Ry, PVC Cutters at Hardware stores are like 5 bucks and work so freaking amazing. I use them on most of my DIY builds. You should invest in some bud! Hacksaws are from the caveman era :p Great Build thought and Imma hop on it!
You guys are awesome. What editor do you use for the intro to your show?
Because we have no money, so we get the cheap, less effective stuff while the big boys who have money from us watching their shows get the better stuff to bring us this stuff. :) The circle of life.
I was literally just looking up videos on this, then i checked my Sub box and this came up!
@jms1295 I was actually surprised how steady the footage without the rig was considering he didn't use a sling for support. Keeping such a small camera steady while in motion is pretty much impossible.
I made this on the weekend... cost me exactly $19.95 at my hardware store! I laughed when she told me the price! Perfect!
I've been asking and looking around at where all the "work" is, most would say the US, but recently I found that they all want to come to Canada. I was thinking about Toronto, but someone told me that film is falling there and my best bet would be Vancouver? what's your opinion?
@spazzmwho They actually make those. I would recommend checking like "Novelty Stores" or "Magic Shops"
Yeahh! Very great job. Awesome!!!!!! Thanks sooooo much ryan
Awesome stuff! to the hardware store I go tomorrow
Oh my lord, what is that incredible test shot music?!
I have a question! Cant you just flip your camera up on your tripod, and then out it on your shoulder? I find that works pretty well and its free!
Hey FILM RIOT, I saw the movie The Rocketeer and loved it, but i really want to know how they did the flying around everywhere and going places so well. You guys can never just get a used-wrapping paper roll and an empty box of chocolates or something haha ;)
I wish i was ryan and everthing was that fast for me.
hey ryan, I was wonderong woudld it be easier to build it with PVC connecters with an angle than heating it up? also could you show us how to make a zipline mount like what they use in the bourne films? thanks
caleb
The Frugal Film Maker has an awesome $5.00 rig..
Hey Ry, What would be the best way to go about mimicking the effects used in Another Earth, you know the awesome Earth 2 and accompanying moon.
This is just a suggestion but a list of the materials int he description box would help SO much!
Fantastic DIY tutorial, great job. :)
Thank You Film Riot. I've always been a stickler for grammar and spelling. 1 out of 2 isn't half bad though.

Next time, can you make a list of all the supplies? That would be super helpful...
Very very impressive, a shame there is no stabilization for this setup. Still impressed, man.
Yusss I've been waiting for this
@EnviroAda probably so. but that means more pieces to buy which means more money. granted it would not cost alot of money. but when you buy pvc pipes, like he had, you usually have to get it at like.. 10 foot sections so its probably cheaper just to bend it
When he shows the nuts and bolts at 1:50 , his hands are backwards. Lol.
@diazrocks Sarcasm. => I utilize Berkey System, CPM CF, and Gini Rigs, so haven't needed to go DIY. 15mm ftw!
film riot went from go daddy 2 to domain.com, u r brave fellas, go with the breeeeeeeeeeeeze!
looks kinda low-low-low-budget but the shots are really good. I'm gonna try to build smthg like that.
Please put the list in the description box!!!!! Makes it easier for us lol
great build!!!
hey film rioters!
i guess i am not the first one to discover this, but you can use almost any better-built tripod as a shoulder mount! (I was pretty amazed when i discovered it :D
@silentcovenant I believe he used the Giottos MH621 (I based this off a quick close up that can be seen around 4:40)
Question if PVC pipe isn't available can you use duck worth with plaster of Paris?
Yo ryan brr.... GREEN TEA SMOKE YEAH !!!!
I love these DIY video's :)
very useful, helped a lot
Ryan where did you get your quick release plate and what is the cost. I am going to build my own RIG soon. But I am using better materials (as I am studying engineering and I have access to all the needed tools/equipment and materials). I can't seem to find a decent quick release plate though.

YES SHOULDER RIG!!!!
Great idea!
finally made it under 301 views like a BOSS.
exactly what i needed! thanks~~!
@filmriot Hey Ryan, which lenss is that? I know it's not the theme of the episode, but I had to ask...
Hello Ryan, you mentioned at 7:26 an external monitor. I've been looking on the internet but can't find them. Can you tell me where to get one? Thank you.

@HudsonRyde Thank you! :) which do you much most prefer to buy? on B&H or at Amazon? i wanna get probably two. really handy.
also get a camera stabilizer program if you are using a home made shoulder rig ;)
Ryan, can you make a tutorial how you edit your vids, the system?
Wait... was that a K5?!? Never knew you guys used Pentax :D
Ryan when you want to apply a curve to a pvc pipe, before o heat it up, fill it with sand, and you will get a perfect curve, and the PVC pipe won't bend like that at 3:01.
Vote up so everyone can see it!
If you show how to make a DIY offset shoulder rig next, I'll be very happy.
@iamwarwick That is true, but I'm just saying. He can potentially make more of those and sell them. It's business.
@AussieVlogging its a LETUS shoulder rig
Thanks it helps alot because we are going to make a video for school
dayyum, that looks really nice! a lot better than the one I made from aluminium pipes and foamboard! mine works fine, but it looks like something made by an orangutan using a knife and fork for tools.
