Today Ryan covers the basics of camera techniques, including the emotional effect using them will have on your audience.
@NoSoyCaca Look in the description section again. It is there. Make sure to click "Show more" so you can see everything that is in there.
As a fellow film student watching your show I love it cause I learn about these techniques and then you guys just trow in more thank you Ryan and crew if only you guys had longer shows or more shows during the week, knowing that you guy have a life and other projects going on it's impossible but thank you guys so much I one day hope to work with you guys
I feel like Film Riot could be a successful TV show.
Agreed
lol yeah,
*****
I bet they could do it for a small budget lol (Ps i would watch)
yes they would, and i would watch it as well xD
Lol
This is kind of like that older episode where Ryan puts his cereal in the microwave and then into the freezer while explaining to Josh about different camera angles but I'm glad that you revisited the subject with this more detailed explanation of the shots! Thanks for all of the awesome episodes guys and keep 'em coming!
This is the episode that brought me to Film Riot :D
same :P
Me too, I have some knowledge about cinematography, but this was a great refresher.
That was 7 minutes and 18 seconds very well spent, thank you!
@trettfilms The episodes we do are largely based off of the amount of times a certain question has been asked. This episode answers one of the most asked questions. You may find this to be basic, but there is a large majority who do not know these beginner steps. The show is not made purely for you my friend, there will be occasions where you will already know what we teach that week. And, since this is a free show, there is no reason to get so upset about it.
@ParadoxAndPlaid Thank you very much. That's how I felt when I first learned all this stuff. Seemed like no one wanted to just say it plain and simple.
This was a great episode. For people like me who never did film school these basics are often more valuable than how to do effects etc.
Man, I love Film Riot, I have never learned so much while being so entertained! You guys are awsome!!
i learnt that in school when i was learning science Communication ,,but u make it so fun to learn ,,,love you guys ~
shareef~
@mr1997luke Yep. We get it next week. So we will have episodes showing what we are doing with it, then the following week we will have episodes about the camera.
@IndXVisions Filters for your lens will help, but you need to make sure to shoot at the right time of day. It also needs to be sunny enough so that your actor is lit bright enough to match the intensity of the sky. Also, I must is a reflector to bounce the suns light onto your actor.

FILM RIOT Thanks a bunch for clarifying the rules for best camera angles to tell a great story in film for me. Being a graduate student from Joey Travolta's INCLUSION FILMS workshop, it was a great refresher for me. I love your show as a whole as well and wish you all well for the future. Live long and prosper.
I've seen this subject tackled many times but this is by far the best one!
@SayidShazeen It's called a "push-pull", also called a "dolly zoom" sometimes. We show how to do that in an older episode. It's the paranormal activity episode.
Thanks Ryan. I'm studying On The Waterfront for English class and your explainations fit perfectly with the film.
This pretty much sums up the first 4 whole chapters of my cinematography textbook, the only difference is this was worded better, more interesting, and did not cost me 60 dollars. I'll have to tell my professors to check this out next semester. It's awesome.
Personal fav is the "Dutch" tilted-angle orientation for the camera. It just makes the viewer feel so unsettled, with the feeling that something is just out of place--in the right context, it can be pretty powerful
Seriously one of the most informative episodes ever. Very quick, simple and to the point. If you want to be good at film, just watch FilmRiot, no need for college. XD
@IndXVisions like the other guy said, a neutral density filter would be good, but a graduated neutral density filter would be most ideal for you along with a reflector :)
@tontie777 Every aspect to filmmaking has several layers. We will revisit topics now and again to clarify or go deeper into them.
Ryan I'd like to see Mondays dedicated to stuff like this, simple steps that go a long way.
This is my favorite episode so far. Very informative... Thanks!
Thanks for this! I'm interested in doing a short film some day but have zero funds for any formal training. Self taught is self pain!
I think the best way to learn my yourself, the way I'm learning, is to just do it. And then find some simple tips and try applying them, them learn some more and make another film. I've made about 7 simple but crappy ones, but their quality is slowly increasing
I'm a fan of low angle dutch shots in action scenes. It really gives a nice effect
@rorkimaru Wow! That was an really nice compliment! Thank you sir.
Great tips man! 5 years later and still killin it!
This was a great episode. Very basic information but really a must for filmmakers! Thanks guys, keep up the good work!
I love Film Riot Mondays....... :)
No. X that. I love Film Riot period. All the techniques have been so helpful for a war short film I'm shooting soon.
Thanks Ryan! :)
Fantastic and useful video, FilmRiot, crew! I like that you guys are going in depth about the "why's" of filmmaking instead of just the "how to's". You're really stepping it up a notch, here. Way to take that IndieMogul torch and run with it!
thankyou! i always learn so much from you guys, and stuff i can actually use too.
great episode!
Exactly what I thought this video was going to teach about. I learned this in a College Composition class. The professor also taught photography/filmography, so she showed us different techniques.
i could skip the commercial parts of these like the beginning of all of the other videos, but i respect and like filmriot a lot so i watch them :)
@Choltik Glad to hear it helped! :)
I love practical effects. More please.
@MrSonam83 Thank you sir. I'm glad it helped!
@Steini345 Depends on your budget. But for lower budgets, look into the Canon DSLRs. T3i, 60D, 5D.
The scene is about EMOTIONALITY!
Great job you guys! Can't wait to see more!
i got my teacher to show this to my media study's class, thank you soo much guys :D
Just discovered you guys, this is the first video I've watchedfrom you guys and Iknow I'll be watching more. thanks
i couldn't found anything better or easier than this to understand! it's freaking awesome!
I am recently in the middle of filming a project...this helped me alot thank you x
My favorite youtubers Freddiew and Corridor Digital lost my trust and didn't upload a video this week whereas Film Riot did and that's something I now i can count on...Plus Ryan actually responds to comments!!! Thumbs up if you think Film Riot deserves way more views and subscribers!!!
amazing techniques........ im working on a movie right now... and it helped me alot.. thnks...
even though the videos just loading, i know its ganna be awesoooomee
Ad is over at 4:23
studying to become a cameraman on my first year, you have taught me more in 7 minutes than my teachers have in a year ;)
Im not really keen on the 'Dutch' angle but when done well it is pretty powerful, Terry Gilliam uses it a lot and it suits his darker films.
Still have no idea, what so "Dutch" is about this angle! Where I live, is everything kind of flat!
guys just a tip, if you have a tripod, just put the camera on the tripod, point the camera vertically and then put the tripod over your shoulder. This weighs the camera down a bit and makes the footage look like it was shot on a shoulder mount. Makes it look so much more professional! just thought i'd say;)
@airpartical That's awesome! Thank you very much!
@ElzTanko its acceptable to break depending on how you do it or the feeling you are trying to get across the the audience. The same with the 30 degree rule
I knew ALL OF THIS already and I've never been to film school.. I just watch movies everyday, read a lot about film and watch a lot of "DVD EXTRAS"... But this is cool for the people that did not know this..
You should do a thing where you BREAK DOWN SCENES from different movies..
Film Riot: Quality content since 2009.
who need to go to cinema school when filmriot is here! keep it up and many thanks for the great tips
One of My Favorite "Crane Shots" is from Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,when Hermione comes out of her house and it cranes up to show her walking....alone down the street. It also using the the "long shot" as well:D
Brilliant episode, I knew the majority of this- but it's unbelievable how much I learnt even though I knew some!! RYAN!! Please do another episode where you had drank Red Bull. I don't think I've ever laughed that much in my life :P!!
Best explanations ever. Bravo.
awesome! you guys teach us the basics of film making in a cool and easy way. and you doin it for free!
standing ovations from germany :)
Hmmm.... I thought it was tuesday... Thanks for helping me keep my days straight, Ryan.
Truly love what you guys are doing! Ryan, love how you play to the camera and keep us engaged. Keep up the amazing work! Fan 4 life guys!!!
@RamaP94 Thursdays.
You guys should do a camera and gear giveaway!
A very good tutorial. thank you. it really explained every angle to me.
@Filmriot please do a tutorial/guide on how to adjust depth of field and just a depth of field tutorial in general for DSLR I am getting one soon and would really love to know how to use it properly when I get it :D
awesome tips, you guys never disappoint. keep it up!
@SvedishProductions You need a DSLR (or something with the ability to have a wide aperature and manual focus) and to use manually focus it :)
Who is actually not skipping those advertising parts in filmriot? thumbs up =)
We learned about these camera angles in Video Production and watched Citizen Kane as well. :) That's the only thing I learned from that class. The rest of the time we watched movies. When we did do actual video projects, we were graded horribly, seeing as we had no idea what the hell we were doing. It was just ridiculous. I say they watch Film Riot videos, maybe the class would actually learn something.
LOVED it. Wow you guys never get tiard of hearing that
I hadn't watched this episode in quite a while, and my God Ryan's voice is so different!
Brilliantly presented, fantastic, simple advice.
Around 3:35 in this film you spell KEF cafe ! , now I know for me how slow to go and rerender the film , but in respect to KEF , you SHOULD do this , great speakers , no advertising needed for me !
@brianphilip182 Glad you like it man!
Congratulations on defeating backyard effects. that was a great finale.
Can you come to the Twin Cities in Minnesota and do a seminar for me to come to and learn with my eyeholes and earballs? You're way more interesting to listen to than a teacher.
oh my god he looks so young
And still very smoochy! :)
God he's so thin in this episode.
Inception effect would be awesome!
Oh man, those clouds are beautiful...
Yay been waiting for this
This episode was awesome, i love this technical things :D please show more
Ryan this is clean and beautiful, good job, you and your guys are doing a great job. This is not just a youtube message, this is lovin to another bro..in. Keep it up dancing, and you are gonna go far with this show.
tthanks for teaching camera angles the fun way you guys.
I always like your videos before i even get 10 seconds into them because of the simple fact i know it will be awesome anyway
It's always fun to learn more about this stuff as a writer who wants to one day be a director. :)
Probably the useful episode for me! Thanks Ryan, great guide!
Great info as usual! Thanks for what you guys do
Extremely helpful video Film Riot!
I feel your pain. Luckily recently we got an assignement where we have to make a movie, finally I get some people to act!
i wish i could save and favorite all of ur episodes...there is just too many with so much in-depth information
@tontie777 I like that they tag some stuff more often, lets remember that new people are coming in here every day and with 150 videos to watch, a smakalacka of reoffing doth not offend.
I am not a paid spokes person...but I did by a slap chop once...
great knowledge
Nice video and tips!
Btw any ideas about the term "Mockumentary" and its film technique? This can be seen in the American TV serial Modern Family!
Still my go to video to introduce types of shots to my students.
Love you guys! I use some of your videos for my film club Grade 5 & 6. They love your videos... well, I don't include the Scarface footage... But thank you! thank you!
I actually learned about Dutch angles from New Jack City. I consider that a win.
camera techniques 101 .good stuff
I so love this show!
