Weird driving 80s day in a Volkswagen

- Casey Putsch drives his 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco for the first time and shows how to adjust the fuel mixture on the fly and is frustrated by a poorly remanufactured power steering pump. The day gets weird when a student forgets to stop a giant puddle of used oil from forming and strange people abound.

"i am feeling the 80s" 10/10, that is one of the many reasons why i subscribed
If you make the sound of the power steering pump loud enough, normal people might think it's supercharged
Glad you’re keeping the Scirocco! It’s a cool car!
Wasn't the pizza delivery guy in home alone driving a Sirocco? 😆
I think it was a Plymouth Horizon but close enough
I own Volkswagen Golf 2 1985, and its doing good
Yes. Love the Sirocco content. Takes me way back to about 85-86 when I'd go to my local VW dealer at night when they were closed and lust after them. Wish I could have talked my parents into one but the 80 Rabbit we had that puked fuel pumps on a regular basis soured them on Volkswagen forever.
Great to see you tooling around my hometown! BGO!! I was in college in the mid 80s. My roommate came to school with an 83 GTI... One day, we drove to a dealer and he wrote a check for a 16v Scirocco. Needless to say, he had a lot of money for a college kid. Both cars were fun. The following fall, he arrived in an M3. I loved driving his VWs, both of them. He Scirocco was nimble, quick, and forgiving.
I did spill oil way more often in the 80's so that is very accurate for me
Another 80s Car that had a similar shape was the Mk1 Isuzu Impulse, both designed by Giugiaro if I remember correctly.
Those did look pretty promising but I never knew if they were actually very good. :)
@@OllamhDrab You'd have to find one first. They are all long gone in my area. I would rather have an E30 though. Favorite 80s car that I personnally owned.
@@yannickg6904 Hee, yeah, I doubt those are findable, never mind necesarily parts I'd need on my budget. I was in nostalgia mode cause I used to see em driving around. :)
@@OllamhDrab I call them Dodo cars, cuz they're all extinct. Kinda like an AWD Mazda 323 GTX. I saw a Dodge K car last week though!. A convertible LeBaron, nonetheless, lol.
I had a 78 Rocco and my brother had a 86. Then I got bit by the Corrado. Best advice I never took was from my dad when I was shopping for my first car, “buy any car just don’t buy a VW.” I’ve learned a lot...
Man I miss those fun cars from the 80's like 240sx and Mark II GX81 that I had to sell. So easy to work on, such simple functional interiors and most of all I do miss popup headlights.
Wasn't ever much of a fan of Scirocco mainly as I'm not too thrilled about FWD cars, but right now I'm ready to trade some pizza for been able to cruise in one, it's like watching the best ad for a car. "Feel the 80's"
Having synthwave in the background would seal the deal for me.
Have you ever heard of vacuum bleeding power steering pumps? I know older Ford pumps are known to whine when not vacuum bled. Might be worth a try on the VW.
I miss my '83 944, but I think I miss my '87 Scirocco more. It was an 8 valve, but it was fun to drive and it did handle better on back roads. Not infinitely better, but better. So much fun.
I’ve had both the manual and power steering versions. I’d switch the box to manual. Very easy. As a “Driver’ you will be glad you did.
I had an 81 model. It was quick and fun to drive.
It was my 90's with those I had to enjoy the older models when I was young.
I still do. But the stuff is way better these days
Better?
Or you have convinced yourself it is better.
@@fastinradfordable No, I mean the stuff that was 10 years old then wasn't as good as the stuff 10 years old now. In 20 more so on. the cool equipment becomes a standard and the later versions of cars do often tend to be better. It perspective I guess.
I dubbed a synthwave mix tape off of the interweb and have it stored in the cassette bin in the center console in my 928 with some other mixes. Nothing like dubbing some cassette tapes to blast in your 80’s car!
Whenever I drive my ‘89 944 I never play any other music than 80’s music!! Although my favourite moments are when I come up behind other 80’s cars, dropping it down a gear and overtaking them whilst blaring out my Hall & Oates and for that moment I’m just imagining being some 80’s yuppie 😂.
In GTIs, Sciroccos and Corrados your hat should be on backwards ;)
And given my affinity for Mitsubishi, Subaru, and mountain sports, I should totally vape, but sometimes you gotta buck the trend. 😛
@@mikegleghorn5437 😂
Looks good because its quite understated and is still quite handsome.
The one thing that always stood out to me about those cars, my uncle had one and the shifter always stuck out to me.....oh yeah... and the shift light that doesn't work....or the A/C.....
Thanks for making me feel young again because all this 80's love goes right over my head 😂 I'm A mid-late oughts guy myself.
Try the Lucas Power Steering fluid. Quieted mine down to a tolerable level on my hemi jeep
Hey Casey, Just a thought, I had an 84 Scirocco, brand new by the way😁, and after I drilled out the hole to adjust the mixture I needed to plug the hole with a rubber plug. Found the she would run better when plugged. Thank you for the Scirocco videos, I really missed mine.
Dang i never considered that but you could be right. That would bleed air that pushes right back down on the plunger arm.
A multimeter and simple harness on the fuel distributor will allow more precise adjustments to your fueling.
There is also a filter screen in the banjo bolt attaching the fuel feed to the distributor. They get all full of crud causing weird issues
I still drive my 87 a few days a week🙂
80s coolness!! HELL YEAH!!
"Will the scirocco work" welcome to owning a vw my fix is the same way😂
If you never expect it to work.
It’s like you are constantly winning. :)
Me every time I (attempt to) turn on my MK3 Golf xd
K-Jet is pretty interesting. I assume it's very similar to the one in my 924 Turbo. FWIW I was getting a rhythmic surging at cruise and I disconnectedb the O2 sensor. It runs so much better that way I left it off. If you're having issues going into closed loop operation you might want to try that.
Parts stores typically have two brands of rebuilt parts. The cheaper brand, they only fix what broke, the more expensive brand they actually REBUILD.
If that’s KE-jetronic, you can set the mixture my measuring the current to the electronic mixture adjustment on the side of the fuel distributor. It’s a little gray box attached to the side of the distributor.
Casey was the bubble boy and missed out the real 80s he’s just chasing lost time
I miss my 16V had an 87! VW FOR LIFE. Current car is a 1990 jetta coupe with a 96 VR6T :) mo power baby
My maintenance and repair journey with my B5 passat has taught me not to buy any reman parts from the usual parts stores, and only new parts of European origin.
Look at Casey fat shaming the poor VW for shame sir. All jokes aside what a great car thanks for sharing it.
I hope that you're not serious about replacing the BBS rims on the Scirocco. They really set the car off, and give it a distinctive look & stance.
17in rims do not belong on a mk1
...It’s an MKII Nathan
soundhead18 it’s a mk2 Rocco which is still a mk1. 17” is a little too much on a mk1
CorradoAlley Oh, yeah...you’re talking chassis. Nvm then.
Not sure I'd get Dominos when you got Campus Pollyeyes in BG ;)
Such a trip watching a TH-cam car guy driving around semi-familiar territory in the Mid West since that's where my gf grew up and we occasionally visit. She was born and raised there.
that car is freaking cool
Gotta have the period correct body kit for it. Don't remember the name of it but the wide body wedgy one.
Ooh that vw looks good
I’ve got one, and I love it!!
Bad PS pump == supercharger sound on a budget.
Jesus Casey sounds one inch away from aneurysm at multiple times lol
Oh you guys only have the restricted version in usa.. i forgot about that.. our (euro)version is way different
(destroyed dozens of Sciroccos in my autocross days.. )
Liking the Scirroco Casey looks great. I have '93 Old Achieva SCX I plan on getting my feet wet in autocross with it. You ever drive one? Mine has Eibach springs, Koni yellows and an Addconrear away bar, very good handling cars even in stock trim.
Can't wait for your next road test :)
15" ATS rims, you can't get more period correct and cool than that (BBS is also always good, but still...) :D Mk2 was internally designed by VW, Karmann just build them (again). What is the market for the Mk2 like in the USA? Are parts easy to source? Myself had to drive to Germany to pick up some doors, was easier than trying to find them here in the Netherlands, but that was a nice 800km round trip. The Scirocco did love bombing the Autobahn, still made it up to 180K/PH on the speedo, that was fun! :D
ATS Cups are very nice period wheels... or get a set of P "Pirelli" wheels, those were OEM and are pretty rare.
ATS Cup wheels are also pretty rare. There are some but they are mostly in really bad condition and still are expensive. at least where I am
The ignition timing joke tho 😂
AutohausAZ for your parts. Excellent quality. Also, make sure the timing belt is good. You don’t want that to shred teeth on a 16V.
"I will take you on the outside!"
....what're you trying to say, Casey?
Like the way you think.I love these cars too
If you adjust the mixture to just right now, wouldn't it be too lean in the winter? or too rich in higher altitude?
@ 15:00 gotta love Wikipedia. Deutz-Allis was formed when Deutz-Fahr of Germany, part of KHD, purchased the agricultural assets of the Allis-Chalmers corporation in 1985.
Love the scirocco content. Whats your thoughts on the eurosport strut brace? The exhaust sounds nice. Is it a tectonics tuning? I have a mk2 gli 16v with sport springs and shocks and it rides comfy yet sporty. 👍
I always did like those, as front wheel drives went. :) And yeah, remanufactured and otherwise cheap parts have not been doing well lately. (And hey, my 90's Volvo is ...kinda 80's cause ...still pretty much a 740. :)
Casey does what is known as "predictive trolling".
You should check out some certa type 6's for wheels. That is the most 80s German wheel choice
The capabilities of the Scirocco are well beyond the bravado of most drivers, what I would do for fun was go find a mountain road that I didn't know and hit it as hard as I could, you can take any corner speed sign and double it for the Scirocco 🙂
Yeah, except braking.
@@fastinradfordable
I never thought the brakes were bad, but then again I had a bug before that
I used to lose mine in car parks, really short and low haha
Maybe put a vacuum on the pump. On 80s Fords, they are notorious for having noisy pumps.
Haha noice. This is straight 80’s money. Even though I am not even born near that generation. Keep up the great work!
I daily a 1981 rabbit pickup with a Tdi swap.
I just put a better intake on it and took her out for a rip for the first time in a month. ...
Way better power/boost. I was mean and chocked off my poor engine for years.
It’s fast now and it still doesn’t go full throttle and the camshaft is worn down to copper.
I’ll get my new cam, tinker with the throttle geometry and fix some rust.
And LOOK OUT for another 40 years of 50mpg
What YOU really need to do Casey is swap in a 1998 Passat 1.8t.
Bolts in to all factory mounts and trans.
Double the power stock.
Easily triple.
And check the crank keyway, make sure it isn't stripped.
P.S.> You should join the Scirocco Owners Group and Scirocco Build Group on Facebook if you haven’t already. “One of Us...One of Us...”
I really think that generation of Sirocco looks like an AE86 corolla to me, that kind of boxy hatchback shape.
Also don’t do what I did and put Preston power steering fluid and ruined the seals in the steering rack. It’s says ATF fluid on the cap of the reservoir which I failed to read. Also you can retro fit power steering to a Mk1 scirocco. Very easy by changing the steering knuckle. Better for auto cross. Neuspeed sport springs with Koni yellow sport shocks are the way to go for either Mk1 or Mk2, lowers the car 1-1/4”. 👍🏻
Buy cheap, buy twice. Yup...OEM costs a little more, but I personally hate doing the same job twice. I have wondered why even non-mechanical things like hoses will last 15 years from the factory, but Autozone, O'Reilley's etc, get all soft and gooey after two years.
"Are you crazy and on some weird kind of drugs?" I'm a little sad you didn't make a Huey Lewis and the News joke there, being prime '80s and all, lol.
Casey: Keep it forever. Also Casey: I sold the VW. The exs family and had a 90s Deutz-Allis tractor, 3 cylinder air cooled diesel. Could pull a house and we used it to mow about 30 acres
sounds like a 944 :D
I got a Subaru justy in the same year and it was used as a parts car so it's not worth rebuilding it for me. What do you think about doing engine swaps on old cars?
Do it.
Do it with an engine you know.
Or KLZE swap everything.
BTW, when adjusting mixture, remove the 3mm allen before revving the engine up. Here is a proper procedure using the O2 sensor... make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks.. www.timbox.net/technotes/setting-airfuel-ratios/
Sounds like you got it in the end.
You probably know this already but, for best acceleration off the line, the best RPM range is roughly between 3500-4500 for that car.
Nope, between 4500 and 7250 rpm this KR 1.8 16v is the happiest😉
ich bin eine Biene lol wokay :D
"RUNNIN" IN THE EIGHTIES", psuedo Initial D moment.
1983 gti in first gear 68 km/h max, not recommended, but it goes.
Reman, well, here's the deal, going forward, remans are never good unless bought under a clear cut written legal binder. That's the point where you have to start doing things yourself. Lathe, metallurgy, mill, the woiks.

I remember that, all those seals died.
similar/ same shape: Audi 200 Avant
You could get them with a 20v 5 cylinder
My 87 had Karman under the shifter, because a girl in was dating at the time was who's Karman?
What was on the 80's mix tape, we didn't get to hear it.....
Who drives that green 2002 in the parking lot at genius garage?
Oh man, this makes me want to spend some time fixing my Rabbit GTI

I don't need another 80's VW... I don't need another 80's VW... I don't need another 80's VW... I am repeating this all the way to the classifieds to look up 80's VW's...
You should really have checked the dwell and the CIS-e potentiometer first.
The best cars were made in WEST Germany.
Ignitin timing. Its either advanced or.. The other way...
LMAO - F.N.G.... classic.
And sorry, the shirt says made in the 80's but that hair line says your more of a 79 or older model. (just busting chops...no harm intended).
And yes the "big store" reman stuff is always a crap shoot. I find I get better results finding a specialist that rebuilds those type of things - cost more but saves the second removal and install time.
If I’d doesn’t make corky noises, it’s not 80s.
