    Oh I love The Pogues, one of the greatest band of time. Shane MacGowan is one of the most brilliant songwriters (such a poet).

  • @erict956
    @erict956 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    So the Pogues formed in London at a time when punk was falling so they knew they weren't the best singers but wanted to do music with a punkish vibe, most of them were of Irish descent so punking up folk songs made sense to them. This was new to modern inner city kids to hear this especially in Southern England or America. In Scotland and Ireland people had been doing this for years in the pubs and clubs so to us it was fairly normal, Shane McGowan on the other hand wasn't and it was his interpretation of songs that set them apart. Love them or hate them you had to admit you couldn't ignore them.

    • @jameswells554

      Yeah, they kinda revelled in the whole "plastic Paddy" bit as some referred to it.

    • @jameswells554
      @jameswells554 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Washer Dryer yuuuuuuup. Now piss off seeing as you're obviously way too young to understand the reasons behind calling them "Plastic Paddies". Lemme guess, you agree with those backstabbing sticky pieces of filth called Sinn Fein as well.

    "Rum Sodomy & The Lash" is taken from Winston Churchill's description of the Royal Navy. The album cover is from the painting "The Wreck Of The Medusa" by Gericault, with the band members heads transposed on. The Pogues are amazing, rest in peace Kirsty and Shane.

      The song was written by Eric Bogle, and if she reacts to it, it should be him first. He also wrote No Man's Land (The Green Fields of France).
      I also consider this version of Christmas in the Trenches to be essential th-cam.com/video/sfdOOCOQ9sk/w-d-xo.html
      Probably aught to react to Waltzing Matilda first. I'm partial to this version th-cam.com/video/rOOcDrxyCDA/w-d-xo.html
      Also need to react to The Dubliners, Rocky Road to Dublin, Scorn Not His Simplicity, Song For Ireland and The Town I Loved So Well.

      @@RyanAcidhedzMurphy you're a man that knows his folk music, not many People in Britain or the US have heard of Bogle which is mad because he's Scottish and wrote two very iconic songs. Australia and Canada have a great understanding of his music and because he has been in Australia since the 60's they quite rightly take him for one of their own. I have been lucky enough to of seen Eric live a good few times and he never fails to impress though I would say Liam Clancy sing No man's land is the pinnacle and it couldn't get any better.

    First of all you're beautiful! Now that that's out of the way, look for Shane McGowan and Christy Moore singing Spancil Hill. It's from a performance on Irish TV in the 1990s. Shane is out of it on drink (and probably drugs) but he shows up cigarette in hand and there's a break in his voice that gives the song such passion and soul and it's done live and in the moment. The tin whistle in the parts (played by a guy called Liam Ó Maonlaí) add a lot of extra emotion to the song and it all adds up to being probably the best version of that Irish folk ballad.
