That Yamaha engine will not disappoint you. I Have one in my Arctic cat 2020 just always use the Yamaha HP 15w50 or 10w40 for the colder outside temps. I love the engine it loves to scream 9,300 RPM is its sweet spot for power. but 10,500 RPM it likes also no problem.
Yes sir, thanks again for that! It’s all still just tacked together. Once I get a little further with the intake and exhaust turbo manifolds I’ll make things a bit more permanent. I still have a few tubes to add in there👍

@@Project2Aero I don’t think that would be too wise. I have a nice tig welder in the shop and a friend that’s certified. He welds the exhaust stacks that are oem equipment on the Kodiak.

I had a lot of detractors when I put a honda 1.8L (turbo) on my RV6A. I built the mount myself too. I now have 100 hours in the air and it is going well.

I was under the impression that this engine posed challenges for mounting the Skytrax gearbox since this Yamaha version doesn't have a mounting flange to easily bolt onto. I was working on my own solution to mount the Skytrax. How has Teal configured his?

Is that engine normaly at a slant or did u just decide that's the way you wanted it? Are you gonna fire her up on a stand to give us that thrill you know we all been waiting for? You gonna go with straight exhaust or does it need some kind of muffler for back pressure?
I’m a long ways from starting it but it’ll happen soon enough. The angle is how it sits in the snowmobile as well. Being turbo, back pressure isn’t needed but I do plan to run a muffler since I don’t want it to sound like a rice rocket Honda Civic with a fart can on the back.

It depends on what Yamaha your after. This is the 998 turbo 3 cylinder model and is found in both Yamaha and Arctic Cat snow machines. Yamaha won’t sell a motor to you but Arctic Cat will. I just went online to and ordered it👍
What are people doing for sunshades for the skylight for these? I have an S 21 on order and don’t want to be cooking in the sun. I saw a neat device in a sling 2 that had a sliding accordion type sunshade.
I’ve been thinking a bit about that as well but am far from making those kinda choices. I’m considering tinting the skylight prior to final install to help with that I think..

Not sure yet, but I’m expecting it to be around 200lbs. Something close to a rotax 915 weight and about 100lbs lighter than a 180hp Titan. I will weight it all at some point when it comes off for final “finishing”.

Your videos are excellent and I have nothing but respect for what you're doing but there are some major gaps between drilling seat rails and hanging an engine on the front. Let's hear more about why you chose the Yamaha and how the custom engine mount came together. I'd also like to know about the performance comparison between the Yamaha and the Rotax/Titan. I'd like to build an S-21 and your opinions affect my decision. We don't fly the same flag but thanks for your service just the same.
Thanks bob👍 yes a one off engine choice is a lot to take on for sure. The performance of this specific engine is a bit of an unknown as there are none that I know of flying currently. There are however many apex installations performing well out there and this engine is somewhat similar. At similar weights to the rotax lines it should be a great performer with the added HP. I’m honored you view my opinions with such weight but do know I don’t recommend you follow me outside of what rans has tested and proven to work unless your willing to to take that responsibility on and savvy enough to go about it safely.
As for why I chose to go down this path, power to weight and dollar to weight can’t be matched. While still a bit unproven, I felt it was worth the chance to see what happens.

Steve, Yamaha says 180 hp up to 10k feet. It’s capable of more and like any engine will operate most of the time at much less. Getting excited about it!

Yup, the crazy prices get me as well.. If everyone just keeps paying it, they’ll never come down. My engine is literally 1/4 the cost of what this airframe is designed around and will be light years ahead in tech and engineering development. Time will tell if the effort was all worth it🤷🏻♂️
@@Project2Aero Price is definately a driver. I'm researching the TitanT-51. I can put a 400HP GM V8 on it for a fraction of the cost of other engines. And when it "wear's out" I can just replace with a zero time unit from GM, again for pennies compared to the cost of rebuilding one of those engines from the 1930's.
I ordered it from Arctic Cat. It’s only a long block and pretty much came like you see it there. It was about $4300 and I’m predicting about 14k by the time I get a working firewall forward package including the gearbox and prop. Nobody has one completed yet so we shall see what that really turns out to be.
Can't believe we are finally getting to the power plant. This thing is really coming along and I am glad I am here for the ride!

Cool, I love this route. What 4130 wall thickness have you used for the mount, out of interest?
The firewall stubs are 1/8” wall 9/16” and the rest is .049”
Good progress. Will the battery, contactors, and ECU be in front of firewall?

Lol, I’ll be using a 3 blade carbon NR brand prop (ground adjustable).. it’s been used on several of the apex builds and seems to be a good fit👍
Curious as to what you think the fuel burn will be? What type of fuel do you plan to run? I was thinking about the 915, but man is that a steep price?
I suspect someplace in the 5gph range for cruise. I’ll use 91 mogas unless I can’t find any, then 100ll is an acceptable alternative.

Mount that turbo with the factory sled exhaust manifold and turbo pedestal.
I am leaning towards the factory location at the moment👍
