      I thought just the complete opposite. I felt they should have found an talented actor that wasn't well known and I think it would have been much more realistic. It took me forever watching this movie before I stopped thinking, "look, there's Dustin Hoffman playing an autistic dude." Overall though, it's a fine movie and one of Tom Cruise's better performances.

      At the beginning V-E-R-N is Raymond's main man. At the end it's C-H-A-R-L-I-E.
      Also at the end, as far as we can make sense of self-contradictory preferences, Raymond seriously considers permanently leaving the routine of Wallbrook to live with his brother Charlie.
      I'd say they both evolve.

      I don't think either of them were intending to be superior, they were two very different movies. Gump basically cruises through life not understanding much that's not entirely personal to him and what he does love he keeps a firm grip on it, all with a very hopeful attitude. Meanwhile Ray tells a far darker and likely more relatable story about actually trying to live with it as someone on the outside yanks him away from that life, said brother not getting it for quite a while and having a rude awakening to it.
      They're both fantastic.

    As the parent of a child on the autism spectrum whom I love more than I love my life, this movie was an amazing portrayal on both sides. That scene on the highway with the underwear gets me every time because I have had many conversations just like that and I totally understand the frustration that leads Cruise to jump out of the car screaming, and I totally understand the shame he later feels for getting to that point with someone who can’t be any way other than the way they are. Like Ray, my boy has some abilities that leave me in awe of him, and some challenges that leave me frustrated with him and scared for him.

      I hope for you, your wife and your son that the difficulties of autism never get in the way of your love for him. I don't know the nature of your difficulties; I hope you won't take anything I say as me belittling them.
      Also... I'm a bit hesitant in saying this, because I don't want to invalidate any of your experiences, but... well, here goes: There are people on the autism spectrum with much less severe support needs than Raymond.

I am more tied to him than any child. I am his voice, his caregiver, his security, his friend, etc. My daughter will grow up and move out and live her life. My son on the other hand needs me to just go to the bathroom at 10 years old. I make sure he knows he is precious to us and that he lives the best life possible. I take him on vacations, theater, etc. As far as being represented severely autistic people are amongst the least represented groups. For one they rarely appear on TV or in movies. Services are cannibalized by the highly functioning. For example when my daughter needed a speech therapist there were many people dying to work with her since its an easy case. I think many people urge love and acceptance and the argument is that autism is a blessing. For the severely disabled it is not a blessing. For parents we do not accept the affliction that was handed to our kids, just like any other affliction such as bipolar or cancer. But we love our kids and we do more than accept them, we care for them. That's not an angry response to your post its a message our small community is trying to spread. Its also not true that we all wan to drown our kids, I love spending time with my son sometimes more than anyone else in this world.

      they are both incredibly tough roles to fill, being able to empathise with somebody with autism is tough, especially if you haven't been friends with somebody with it, and taking the contrary role of the person in charge is equally as difficult and must be able to empathise again, this time with BOTH characters, the understanding of his situation and his ability to cope with rain man, also I cry every time.

    I always heard the name "Rain-Man" on some occasions, but no one ever clarified what RainMan was. So for the longest time I thought it was a movie about a trench-coat guy who battles street thugs in the rain.
    Now I'm learning that it's a...comedy drama about an autistic man and his brother on a road trip?
    Jeez not what I was expecting at all.
    I sure hope my guess about Watchmen being about a trench-coat guy who stalks and battles street thugs is true.

    The neurotypical character is greedy, rude, aggressive, and has multiple meltdowns in this short video. Yet he is supposedly normal?
    On another note, the scene where Raymond counts tooth picks by looking at them was based on the first man who was diagnosed with autism. He later said that he didn't have the ability to immediately count things by looking at them. He just guessed once when some teens his age asked him and went with it when they believed him because he wanted to be accepted by his peers.

    • @shotgun6125
      @shotgun6125 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If the scenes shown are what Ray was usually like (haven’t seen the show sorry) then Tom Cruise’s character is actually reacting pretty normally. I myself have been in a position where I had to help care for someone with a brain disease. Corticobasal Degeneration is a rare disease which first attacks the part of the brain responsible for coordination, and then spreads to other areas of the brain. It’s kind of like reverse Alzheimer’s. My grandpa had it, and my dad and I had to care for him. At times he actually did act like Ray in some of these clips, and my dad and I both ended up reacting like the other character. Was it a good reaction? No. Was it really condemnable? Hell no. That’s why working in a nursing home takes a very special person with a LOT of patience

    I didn't do so well when I had an assignment with an autistic child. A lot to learn and I needed a lot.of patience. I couldn't and I still can't do it. I'm here to argue for them so they can have help in social situations and hopefully we can find dedicated people to assist them in their daily lives. After I left the assignment I was so happy but once I learned about the disability I felt like Cruise did when he came to the realization that his brother would be in better care with a specialist and that he loved him so much he had to let him go. I think about how happy special kids are to be alive and to learn and to experience. That feeling came just recently when GOD made me competent and took away my selfishness. I really hope that these men and women can receive the attention they need so that they can experience all the adventures life has to offer.

    5:10-5:18 is the turning point of the movie, which is my absolute favorite. It is every bit as much about Charlie as it is about Raymond. Initially, Charlie is this hot-headed, self-centered, abusive jackass. Then, as he builds a connection with Raymond, he comes out of his own different shell. He learns through it all that as someone once said, the best things in life aren't things.

    • @Justice237
      @Justice237 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm pretty young, so my advice might not be the most reliable, but I'll try my best.
      Apparently, the reason Tom believes so fervently in Scientology is because it helped him overcome dyslexia, but when I looked it up, the beliefs of Scientologists seemed kind out out-there and far-fetched to me. I'd try to find out more about it before making that decision, as well as probably asking for your son's input as to whether he wants it. I would also look up other available ways to help your little man as well, because so many people are saying that Scientology is dangerous, and while I'm not so sure of that myself, I'd recommend other available means before reverting to a method that may or may not be risky.
      Hopefully this helps.

      Sanford is a dick; Raymond's autism occured because Sanford imprisoned him at Wallbrook in the first place.

      I have a brother and a cousin with Autism, also a boy in my class is Autistic. I'm not trying to push you and your son into anything, but we are Christians. We used to go to a Baptist church, but they were rude to us, we soon went to a Methodist church and my whole family is love and accepted, Autistic or not.

      André Hatlevik I never said ye did anything bad because your religion said to do it. I said, only that Christianity was a cult. The evidence is overwhelming.
