- Hybrid torsion catapult I made for a school project. Sorry about the wind noises but I can't really help that. This is one of the first shots we took, we were just guessing with the tension and angle of release. After some modifications I have it shooting close to 450 feet. Its a true thing of beauty. In this launch the melon went approximately 250 feet if I remember correctly.

This is the first actual catapult I've seen all day
When they switched the tension from the winch to the hammer... That's an accident waiting to happen.

Torsion is something else!
To stop the arm from ripping off we mounted the crank with 4 massive bolts into the base of the frame, and the hammer hooked onto a pin that we put through the throwing arm. The natural curvature of the hammer allowed for a quick release with a jerk.

We used about 150ft of 1/2in. military grade nylon rope. and the frame was 8ftx4ft. If you really want to shoot a far distance make your frame thicker than i did, I would suggest making it 4 inches (i suggest 10x8x4 boards ) thick instead of the 8x8x2 boards i used. It will be a bitch to drill out the holes for torsion, but it should pay off. Any other questions just let me know

@Wargamer008 if I remember correctly the length of the base was ~ 8 feet length, 4 feet in width, and the arm height was just over 9 feet
But can it launch a 90kg stone a distance of 300m?

Thanks. What was the total cost of this project? I am making my catapult for AP Physics and yours looked like the perfect one to model after.
@purplelamprox haha ya the crank is a pain to deal with. One problem we keep running into was that we couldnt mount our crank in a "sturdy" Location and the throwing arm kept ripping it off.

umm i want to do this for my sciece project and i was wondering what u did to keep the swinging arm in place
I actually ran a couple of lengths of the cord through the throwing arm for stability and the torsion applied the rest of the pressure needed to keep it in place.
I hope i am answering your question correctly if not please let me know. If you are asking what we used as the stopper at the the of our brace it was actually a very high tech mechanism.... a pillow and duck tape. We did torsion the bottom as well, if you would like to see a better look at the actual torsion check out my other video as it shows a close up. We used 1/2in. military grade nylon rope.

@AlphaGinger113 yeah thats torsion, the tubing helps acceleration.
@Wargamer008 Its hard to pin down an exact cost because we had to go through quite a bit of trial and end and we ended up breaking things or switches stuff out. If i were to estimate i would say about ~$300 if you did it right the first time. If you buy a pre-made winch/crank and buy low quality rope it would be cheaper though.
@Aragashia If only you knew the injuries and accidents involved in the making of this catapult. When we first tested it with maximun torsion and more elastic bands it managed to flip itself over and destroyed my garage.

@blackittysamurai we actually did try to shoot water balloons, but unfortunately the G forces are too high and the balloons explode during release. Perhaps if we looked into buying more durable balloons it would have worked.... but we were a bunch of poor high school kids lol
Our PVC did end up bending a little bit but the interior walls of the stuff we used was pretty thick at 3/8in.

This design doesn't make any sense. Why use elastic bands if you have torsion power. Or are they both so weak that it should appear to be helping?
@emir yılmaz Elastic bands are something totally different than torsion power. Torsion is twisting of the rope due to torque. With correct torsion power you will always have energy stored in the rope. As you can see, elastic bands do not.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think this is torsion powered.
Its a hybrid, they have a torsion rope and a tension powered band both working to launch the melon

I don't see the so called torsion mechanism of this catapult. It seems like just a elastic slingshot type deal.

Makes me cringe to think what could have happened.
We got it to shoot around 450 ft with some fine tinkering, but it was essentially tearing itself apart by that point.

Why would you put such a lame projectile in it?
This video should be removed. Latex tubing fails catastrophically and without warning. It's like a gun with the safety off. And if it breaks while they're over it, they will definitely be maimed or killed.
while I agree with the whole tubing will fail catastrophically thing. I don't agree with 'it's like a gun with the safety off'.
The trigger must be pulled to strike the firing pin, which strikes the primer.
Modern firearms are quite safe from accidental discharge when dropped while loaded and the safety off, because of a block that is moved when the trigger is pulled. (Please correct me if I am wrong on this.)
Horribly dumb. Even if the hammer stayed in place, I wouldn't trust the wall of pvc pipe to hold that tension.
What tension? If it's possible to hold the arm down with a couple of hands, it clearly without significant tension.
