Brian Stokes Mitchell is the perfect Emile. Reba is the perfect Nellie. South Pacific is the perfect musical with enchanting songs. They should have taken the opportunity to remake the movie with this cast since the scenery in the movie was as breathtaking as the music. I do feel that Alec Baldwin was miscast as Luther. Ray Walston in the movie as Luther was spot on. they should have tried to find someone more like Ray Walston.
I agree that this is better because Reba brings all of the character into her song. She has the advantage of technique integrated with accent. Kelli O'hara looses the accent in the high notes, she sings beautifully but it doesn't serve the role. She doesn't sound like someone who would call herself a "hick". Paulo has the French accent in the spoken parts but not in the song. It is like his character is doing a perfect job of lip synching a wonderful singer. Brian has an accent, (perhaps French Polynesian? Because he learned English on the island? ), and he has the same powerful tones in speaking as he does in singing, so it is his character singing. The songs have to come from the characters without leaving them behind. That is the concert version's strength.
No, no, no, Mr. Mitchell! You simply cannot fail to sing that final high note in "Some Enchanted Evening!" The whole song is aimed toward that famous climax...Shame on you!

Brian Stokes Mitchell...a Broadway favorite. Between gigs, he played Hillary Banks boyfriend (the newsman) on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
He has a couple of "Tony's" one in 2000 for "Kiss me Kate" and another for, "Man of LaMancha".🌺🌺
