- When we bought our farm almost four years ago- chickens were the first farm animals that we got. 🐓
Some of them we adopted, and others we raised from hatchlings.
We never realized how many benefits they would add to us and our home. Obviously, the price of eggs have tripled and having access to them everyday in our backyard is a huge blessing.
They eat bugs, provide incredible garden soil by composting food scraps, and are very low maintenance to keep.
It’s a true symbiotic relationship between them, our farm, and what we provide each other.
Having one less thing to depend on the grocery store for gives a lot of piece of mind.
If you live in the city & have a small yard, check your city’s regulations. Most actually allow for a small backyard coop and keeping hens.

Best pets ever. Our rooster Fiona recently passed away and he was my husband’s BFF. He cried more for that bird than his grandma. Fiona didn’t crow - he honked. And he would come to the back patio and “honk” until my husband came out and picked him up and carried him around. He found treats for the girls & did a great job protecting them. RIP buddy.

My family used to own 14 chickens they have now all unfortunately passed but we got around a dozen a day. Definitely worth the time

@texas_to_table I raise pheasant and quail as well. With prices of everything going up people really need to become more self reliant. Grow and raise food and you gain more then you will ever know. God bless
You’re so right! We taught ourselves how to raise chickens as well as longhorns for beef. It’s a steep learning curve but worth every minute and ounce of effort. Self sustainability is our goal

I can’t even eat storebought eggs anymore! They taste like boring yuch! to me, after two years of my own garden eggs
Several years ago we had a family crisis where we were barely able to pay the bills. But my chickens were laying 6 eggs per day. Along with a small veggy garden we did just fine. After weeks of this my doctor took blood and he read the results to himself. He said whatever it is you're doing, keep it up. You're doing great.

Most people don't realize that chickens lay eggs whether they are mated with a rooster or not. No rooster, no fertilized eggs.
We love educating friends about this fact. It’s surprising how many people don’t know that
It's sad that there are people that literally don't know the birds and the bees
They are not concerned about the egg itself. They are (oddly) concerned that you are emotionally harming the chicken by taking the egg away. 98% of people who don't have/weren't raised with chickens think the hen will sit on that egg until it's dying breath. They have 0 clue that it hops right out within seconds after laying it, and do not care about it whatsoever. I have had this conversation with people online and in real life over and over. They are not capable of understanding the gravity of the situation.
Yeah. We know. But people forcefully bred them for them to be able to produce so much. And it's still bad to take advantage of them. Also, purchasing animals is always wrong.

Chickens haven't been "bred" to lay more eggs. Have you never heard of a woman having a period, and do you not know what "ovulation" is? A FEMALE chicken will lay an egg every day. That is what they will do, and have since the beginning. My God this is one of the most uneducated comments I've ever seen 🤣🤣🤣
I had chickens for several years. I had eggs, fewer weeds, fewer pest insects, almost no grubs, and some of the best entertainment imaginable.
They are so great to have on the property and those are some of the benefits most people don't even know about. It's definitely not just about the eggs!
Yes I love my chickens they are so super smart with big characters my chickens one day came pecking on my sliding door I was surprised because usually they'd been inside perched already well 1 came up to the door and was pecking on it while the others stood together behind her and was stretching their necks out as if looking 2 see if she got any help i said 2 my boyfriend if he could go check out if there door had shut on them and he came back and said yea it was shut I was jaw dropped stunned and laughed like omg they're so freaking smart i get a kick out of it when one finds something delicious out in the yard she goes running because she has the whole flock chasing her to take it I just lovem
@@crystalo3550 I mean, chickens are awesome, trees can also search and find water and minerals under the earth without showing us that it is moving an inch. Plants are also quite communicative. And they also ask for help. Sometimes, I have visions of them and when I go check, there is something happening that needs my help. I also talk to them and say they must tell me how to help them.
A farmer in my neighborhood died and on his funeral, the cattle stopped grazing and sat by the roadside while he was being taken away crying and moaping. I can't explain it in English, it was something to behold. My cows also are quite cheeky. When they were hungry in winter, they would come and peek in my rondavel, in my ancestral homestead. Sometimes they talk to me and I don't understand but I ask God and we end up understanding each other. 2 other cows came and stood in front us while we prayed the Hail Mary in Latin, when we were done, it moo-ed so loud we were all quite taken aback. Soon after that, it was calmer and could stay in the kraal we built it.
@@1ntuthukozwane its so amazing ain't it that like plant and animals in a sense we are alike all alive and we all find a way to communicate with each other its neat we are so much like plants we truly are i am new to all of it so im still in awe of the wonderful creations of God he made it perfect and man does not appreciate it should be i understand u just fine and such amazing story about the cows of your neighbor so sad 😞 and still so amazing the unconditional love our animals have for us they truly deserve better its sad the cruelty that alot of animals experience in the slaughter houses
@@crystalo3550 yes. At least most back yard chickens are happy doing exactly what they were intended. They also would not survive in the wild anymore. That’s why mine are in mobile pens I move daily. Plus side: they get greens, entertainment, and I have no ticks in my yard as my dogs don’t get them anymore !!

@@Grayson4lifewe can definitely eat bugs. They are identical nutritionally to other arthropods like shrimp and crabs, they just live on land.
You could argue that eating the shells could cause constipatiom, but they can be shelled just like crabs/shrimp.
Humans have been eating bugs longer than they have been eating meat from vertebrates.
That said, I do think most bugs are gross to eat. I would stick to large bugs that are much more like shellfish and are cooked properly. Worms/grubs and small crunchy bugs are gross to me.
@@CausticTitan like John the Baptist ate locust. Probably over a fire as I understand they can have parasites raw. I’d totally rather NOT eat bugs. I grew up on the south. I’ve seen my share of some scary looking bugs. Cools ones too
This is why I have chickens. I get more eggs than I could possibly use so I give them away to my neighbors who have families. I have two dozen chickens and that means I get over 100 eggs a week but I only eat about a dozen a week. In exchange I get the extra fruit from their fruit trees.

That's awesome I don't have space for chickens right now living in the city but I used to buy for my neighbor. But we do get shared fruit from a lot of people. Keep up the sharing, and the healthy eating.

I love chickens! Never had them but have family members and friends that do. It's funny when you're in urban areas where I live, you can hear these gals cackle all loud. Just funny to be walking down the street near Broadway and 1st and hear what sounds like a farm 😂
And I looove eggs! I used to eat eggs everyday in the morning, but got out if the habit. I should get back into it. Some veggies scrambled with some farm fresh eggs with a little cracked black pepper...tasty filling and delish 😍🐔🥚
We need 2 get back 2 having gardens and hobby farms. Its the perfect balance in life...

If people are unsure about having them, I recommend getting bantam chickens. They are small, cute, and make great pets. That how I started my kids into chores and responsibilities.

Chickens are cool! I grew up around them, as my grandparents had them at their country home. Their chickens roamed and ate bugs all day, every day. At night, they would walk into the hen house and jump-up on some poles hung from the roof that were horizontal. They would snuggle down there together for the night. Then, the henhouse door would be shut for the night. I recall Grandpa having to get up during the night to shoot some wild animals trying to get into the henhouse to eat them. Bam! Grandpa's shotgun would go off. Then, he would go back to bed.
They are so fun to have on the farm. Watching them in their coop, their run, and free ranging around in the yard is so entertaining. You're right about the predators, we've had to do that a few times as well to keep our flock safe.
I got tired of paying the egg prices at the supermarket so I felt me a chicken coop went out and bought me 12 chickens and man I am happy camper❤

I used to be a dairy manager in a large grocery store. By the time a shipment of eggs hits the shelf, they can be a month old.

@@Grayson4life I'm not quite sure what you mean but, even the "freshest" eggs are several weeks old by the time they make it to the store cases. I have the best results in cook and taste with England's Best. But, that's my preference. If I'm baking or putting them into something complex, etc. then it's not as big a deal but EB brown eggs are pretty good.
@@MtnBadger a friend told me they literally changed the expiration date on egg cartons to leave them on the shelf!! I know!! The brown eggs are not nutritionally different from the white eggs, except Egglands do seem to have the best grocery store eggs to me. But I haven’t had any on probably close to a decade now. Once when my hens winter rest and I ran out of eggs. Was making a pound cake and finally got some eggs from my hens. Broke with egg lands and the difference in the yolks was obvious!! My hens eggs were more orange than the yellow yolk. But mine get fresh grass daily good food and good treats and of course was very fresh. I’m afraid Leghorns will not be available and that’s too bad because none lay the quantity of eggs they do. They lay a white egg and they are slim hens so they don’t eat much. Excellent bug carchers too
Hens and most roosters are very tame, provide good fertilizer and are damn funny, people don't realize how personable chicken can be.

I loved to give mine grapes as chicks in their pen under their light (seedless of course at that age) and watch them chase each other for grapes. 😂
I have friends with chickens, I trade wood working projects for eggs! but they have a roster that likes to sneak attack. It doesn't hurt to bad!!

That’s eggactly what I did 16-17 years ago. Ruined me for store bought eggs. Ugh!! For starters
my friends German Shepherd and rat terrier/Dachshund mix just roam around in the backyard with the chickens! I was so nervous but all 6 just went about their business and got along great!!
We've found that the more all of our animals spend time around each other, with us around, the more comfortable they are co-existing without issue
They produce very healthy eggs and they will make compost for you that will make your garden grow beautifully. and they do all the work for that compost, which is even better. They get all your kitchen scraps and weeds and garden waste. And turn it into black gold.
They’re so great to have on the farm! We are actually moving compost dirt from their run to our garden boxes today to start planting. This year’s garden should be amazing

I was so used to store-bought eggs that when we were forced to buy local eggs from a nearby farm due to an outbreak of avian flu, I initially thought that the fresh eggs were spoiled because the yolks were cloudy. It was only after doing some research that I learned that cloudy yolks are actually a sign of freshness and nutrition in eggs.
The difference is incredible! So glad you found a local source for farm eggs

I eat eggs like these. I'm thankful that my friend raises chickens for just this purpose. The chickens just run around the yard. They look just like these eggs here...various shades of brown and light blue. Yummer eggs!

Consider Coturnix quail also. Quiet enough for neighborhoods, no salmonella, high egg production.
Agreed, I tried chickens but they crapped on my doorstep and I don't have enough space for them to roam. Quail are much better and quieter if one is limited with space and Karen neighbours.
When I was a kid we hit a rough patch where we had not a lot of money coming into the household. The thing that saved us was us having chickens. We had German pancakes, omelettes, eggs and rice, egg bagels, for days on end. Some of those things I can't eat now because I ate them so much then. But I am forever thankful for having those birds around. God is great.
I've had a free range flock wandering my yards for the last twenty five years. There is no egg more delicious and nutritious than home flock eggs. Bonus is we do not have any problem with ticks.
They’re the best, store bought don’t compare. And not having to worry about ticks or fleas is amazing!

🐔 Chickens are lovely. They eat most household scraps as well. 🐓 Don't get a rooster unless want fertile eggs though. A hen lays 240 eggs per year on average. Hens go off laying when the daylight hours get shorter.

Mine lay rear round...keep them warm n add some steamrolled oats from feed store, oyster shells for calcium, alfalfa hay, oat hay instead of straw w standard layer n scratch my chickens lay year round...

A light bulb or solar light extending the morning & evening day light hours can also help productivity. My chickens free range, no predators here. Very little feed required. I don't cull my chickens either, they die of old age. Mixed age flock, more than enough eggs to feed myself and share. For minimal effort at next to no cost. Chickens are fabulous little creatures!
No lights just a solar sensor light for predator deterrent...clean Warm bedding in layer box oat or forage hay DEEP n fluffy or shavings pine or cedar (cheapest), no wind...this year I'm trying something new, dog kennels with camo tarp wrapped snug n over the top (no wind) n took out metal water dispenser ( soured the water) n use an open plastic bucket (tall as the chicken to keep out scratch dust)for water...I noticed if I dumped water bucket every other day the fresh water made them drink more n lay year round...🐔🐔🐔💕💕.
Here's a tip for all, CHICKEN STARTER is medicated ($h if this get to the wrong ears they will regulate it) feed your chicken etc. When they get wounded ( rooster over breeding or fighting) n the antibiotics will heal them real fast...this is a golden tip ...
Super important conversation. We are ethical "pegans" meaning we do not consume meat and are high plant based but we use eggs from our chickens as additional protein. Our health is even better now compared to when we were vegan. We love our chickens and treat them as members of our family who will live out their lives protected and respected. 🙏💜🙏

I love meat as it’s a big part of my culture. But I can respect vegans and vegetarians and just other cultures for trying to minimize their contributions to harm in the world. Yes eggs are a wonderful way to accomplish both minimizing harm _and_ meeting your nutritional needs. Chickens are like a cheat code for turning bugs and grass into edible, protein and nutrient dense food for humans in a small package like an egg. Other forms of non meat protein like commercial soy farming are much more harmful to the environment than just doing some egg farming for yourself. Plus all the free fertilizer you get from those chickens is great for growing your own little crops. We all should be farming and growing some of our own foods.
I was pescatarian for a while and it didn’t feel half bad to be that way! I personally think that you could follow any diet you want, so long as you don’t force it on others!
I've been wanting to present the question to vegans if they would have any qualms eating happy backyard chicken eggs, and it's cool seeing somebody is already on that wavelength :D
My family has raised chickens since forever. Living with and raising them is an experience in itself. Currently I am planning on making a lil hat for my favorite chicken, fluffers

So, if limited space, choose your breeds very carefully and keep very few (3-4?) And ALWAYS offer plenty of entertainment/dust baths/swings& perches, fresh greens & dried mealy bug larvae!
My wife's in laws Had chickens for 30 years I took some of the dirt out of that pin And grew tomathe plants were 15 to 16' high best soil you can get
It’s amazing, isn’t it!?!? Chicken composted soil is extremely high in nitrogen. We actually have them composting a few yards of soil per week in preparation for our spring garden planting
Just make sure to dilute the chicken poo down so your plants don't burn! It's a very great fertilizer 😊

The more grass chickens eat in their diet the deeper orange the yolks are as well as being more nutritious. So, don't use chemicals on your lawn and feed the clippings to your chickens.
Also, if you buy eggs and the carton says "fed vegetarian diet" don't buy them.
Chickens are omnivores and are scratching for bugs and worms, etc, If they are fed vegetarian food that means they have been raised in a cage and have never been able to scratch and peck as they naturally do.

I think that having chickens is so much more rewarding than having eggs. I would have them even if they didn’t lay eggs because their fertilizer is great in the garden and in these times when gardening can be so expensive I am able to have rich soils with just chicken manure, compost, and fish guts and heads and crab shells. They also are entertaining to watch and my fruit trees and flowering plants are absolutely thriving with the added manure
My family got chickens when i was 15, and i seriously can't even stand store bought eggs anymore. My girls have more than enough room and give me a dozen eggs every two days... AND I'm adding some more birds.
Even with the new birds, they have more space than they ever need.
I'm hoping to get goats soon, but chickens are one of the best first steps you can take

Free-range for now... apparently a bill has passed or is in the works to ban free range chickens.... because of bird flu. Yeah. Our lovely government is just looking out for us.

Ive had chicken in the family my whole life. They are very simple to take care off and generally not a problem. Food/water done. Honestly a cared for chicken will have two or three times the size egg of the rushed industrial egg. Far better for one to. If the egg looks like a pong ball its did not develop correctly rushed through the hen. The only downside to chicken is the many land mines they leave around the yard. Or that every predator out there wants them.
Honestly, chickens are great. Though for someone starting out give Quail a try. They need even less space and are easy to care for to.

The next best thing to having your own flock is finding a local farmers market to support. That’s the best source for eggs and other organic groceries
As a vegan this the only animal product I can consume. I bought baby chickens weeks ago just for fun for the kids. Never knew this egg crisis was going to happen. Now I find myself building a coop and buying chicken feed

Can I ask if you feel its the chicken breeding industry is ethical? I've always wanted chickens and last year I finally I got my 3 chickens from a friend who wanted to rehome them to a bigger space. I'd like more chickens though I feel uncomfortable buying them from a breeder as males would likely be killed as they do not lay eggs, and many councils do not allow people to keep them. Interested to hear your thoughts on this
@@alinapung5155 You could join some local chicken groups on fb and buy mature hens from people looking to downsize their flock. That would be one way to add hens. But ultimately, as with most livestock, the females are more desirable for their reproductive longevity and temperament compared to males, so males are generally used for meat. The hens you do add to your flock are going to have a great life

I love chicken eggs. People in my neighborhood have chickens. We also have owls 🦉.. they have no ethical dilemma killing my neighbors chickens. The sound is the worst part.
Hawks were our nemesis for a while until we got our flock a secure run. It's a constant battle with predators if you have chickens

I have ducks, and I do want chickens, but both are the best entertainment I've ever had. They've got such great personalities! People don't understand just how sweet and friendly they can be, and they're extremely intelligent, too.
Chicken is the most survival animal to feed a family ,I know my mother always has Chicken and she raised 11 kids on eggs rice and beans

My husband and I are talking about getting a couple chickens. In our county, we are allowed up to 10 chickens in city limits, which I feel like is a lot for us but I do know multiple people that have a few chickens. Hell, my sons best friends mom has like 4 chickens. She has a huge gated off area for them in her backyard so her dogs dont bother them. They just roam around and keep her bugs to a minimum.

As long as they're 1) live in good conditions 2) are unfertilized, and 3) loved and cared for as living beings vs something to get eggs out of.... there's not much of a moral dilemma. I've been completely vegan for 11 years and I'm getting chickens this week 🌸
Also) you can't much listen to the "free range" lable. Most "free range" chickens still live in awful conditions and the requirements to get that lable aren't quite what you imagine when ya hear the word free range. So it's better to still visit the farms vs blindly buying from the store if you must.

true - but about the fertilized part - do as you feel fit, but we had 20 birds and many of them went broody once a year - things experience taught me 1. of a flock of 20 only perhaps 6 of mine Ever went broody - once... so the average chicken/duck is never going to sit on those eggs. You would have to pick them up and incubate them if you want a real chance of them becoming birds 2. Even when a hen did go broody, they only hatched 1-2 chicks in the 12 or more they sat on - even though 100% were fertilized. 3. the hens that did go broody Only went broody once a year, regardless of weather. So fertilized or not (you can't tell when you crack them) they aren't chicks till they're hatched. Only a brooder has a decent hatch rate.
The roosters do offer some protection from Aerial predators, in particular - not because they can actually fight, but because when they see one they crow like mad men, the hens run, and the predators head for them - as such they do save a few hens. Personally, I don't see any ethical dilemma in eating a fertilized egg since it still has to incubate to become anything. To each their own though - I have no issue when someone says they won't. When you buy pullets though the guarantee is something like 90% - they can't sex them perfectly at birth - you can't know with 100% certainty till one crows and another lays an egg. If my roosters got aggressive they got culled, but I didn't process them just because they happened to be male.
Our chickens eat all our kitchen waste, veg trimmings, love tomatoes, cabbage leaves, lettuce. They even eat their old egg shells for the calcium. A chicken gives an egg every two days. My only problem is, I fall in love with them. I can't kill them or give them away to be eaten. I've got four now that hardly ever lay, on their own life-long pension plans. Keep your own. You know exactly what they've eaten and the yolks, my God! Dark, golden yellow. Incredible. Nothing tastes like a proper free-range chicken egg.
I have a white pigeon that deeply bonded with me. In the last 3 years she has laid about 40+ eggs

Ive had chickens my entire life, and it blows my mind how much better eggs taste when theyre fresh vs store bought. I used to think that eggs in restaurants were fake eggs, because they taste nasty by comparison. Chickens make such fun pets, and mine are so sweet
My parents have 10 chickens and since they’ve had them for the past 4 years, I have not had to go to the store and buy eggs, it’s so great 😊

Next best thing is to find a farmers market and buy from a vendor there. Maybe your city/neighborhood will grant an exception?
Perhaps no rooster and mobile pens? You won’t need a rooster that way. They don’t need a rooster to lay eggs.
They're fun, once you figure out how to keep the hawks, bobcats and foxes away......
The predators keep you on your toes with chickens. Our dogs keep bobcats, foxes, and coyotes out. We have a fully enclosed outdoor run due to issues with hawks, and we allow the chickens to free-range in the evenings when we are out in the yard

Get a goose and he will ferociously protect your flock from predators.
Chickens need layer pellets. They need clam shell pellets and sunflower seeds. They are not free meals. They also need pine straw for their roosts.
This is exactly what I tell my vegan sister in law. She is raising my niece vegan as well which is fine but when she started to not gain enough weight we all told her to get eggs from her moms chickens and feed them to my niece bc of the high protein! Bc ultimately a child's health is priority and to be able to get eggs with a clear conscience was very important to them. It took some convincing but she finally came around to it and it definitely helped alot!

I had Banties for years. Enjoyed the eggs a lot. Going back to store-bought eggs was difficult. They didn’t seem to have much flavor.

Chickens are actually man's best friend. Dogs take the glory, but chickens have been by our side even longer and have kept many people from starving.
I wish I could let my chickens free range but there are just too many hocks I’ve tried before but know they just have to stay in the chicken run
The hawks were our nemesis for a couple years but now we only let our flock free range the last couple hours of the evening and we haven’t had an issue since changing to this routine
I love eggs, especially when the chickens are treated with kindness. I will pay more for that.

@@a-a-rondavis9438 aha lmfao yea I know taken just am always in a hurry and its the least of my worries I seem to get my point across well at least I feel like it to the individual im speaking to that is but yes I just don't feel im at school taking a test and im always hurrying i even shorten my words in my own way but usually I get a response that I see fitting and being in a hurry i tend to press the word that my phones predictive text or whatever it's called first pops up and because I hurry through i tend to press wrong 1 and because I do that it will continue to pop that one up and it becomes like a vicious cycle

@@texastotable so true... they can do some of the funniest things... and they are very smart and affectionate... they would give me kisses by putting their little beaks on my cheek and cuddles by snuggling up and putting their head close to my neck when I held them...they were also lap hoppers.
It's fun and good for you in so many ways. I miss my shoulder chicken 😭 It was my little brother's school project, but I helped because I wanted to and did most the work, so it was a win/win lol
I love Joe because he is reasonable. People don’t realize, eggs are not chickens. They are simply immunity, fat, calories and water. BTW, I have five hens, five pullets, two chicks my hens hatched and a cockerel. Most people around me STOPPED eating eggs and in some cases - chicken too. I swear they think they’re eating my birds. LOL it kinda sucks tho. I was hoping the eggs would be accepted happily. Nope.

The funny thing is now with the price of eggs going up….everyone is getting all “off grid” again and making runs in buying chickens. So now there’s a shortage of chickens and the price of the chickens is through the roof.
And in about 6-12 months the price of eggs will have corrected and everyone will be stuck with their chickens.
Even if the price of eggs comes back down, everyone who has their own chickens will have much better eggs than those bought at the store

Eating eggs from your pet chickens is far less violent than eating vegetables.
I have 3 but wish I had closer management since my parents keep them for me and are to busy to take care of them.
Yeah, they’re pretty self sufficient but giving them more attention goes a long way

Our chickens are 100 % free range and only eat what's outside with some sweet corn.

I was a hard core vegan for a little over 3 years. Now I have 6 back yard chickens and eat eggs daily. They have really become a part of our family and I truly believe they are happy here.

Eggs are the most healthy living and I used to sit in the coop as my pets when I was a kid I loved all the chickens in the world

1. Free food while they forage the forests ( eggs and meat )
2. Free companionship when alone ( rejected by greedy city dwellers )
