I'm 21, and it's good to see someone else around my age to enjoy Fawlty Towers for the masterpiece it is and not get too uptight about it. While I enjoy Fawlty Towers and the writing, the timing and the on-screen chemistry regardless (and always will) I agree that while insurmountably hilarious, I would totally recommend watching the episodes in full to understand the immediate background of the scene at hand. I'd watch all of them to be honest. There's only twelve episodes so the quality of them is very high. Even after over forty years later, they never fail to make me laugh.
Amanda. So glad that you like British Humour. Not sure how many people know this but the best bits of FAWLTY TOWERS are the Anagrams of said name on the front lawn of every episode - the most naughty of which is FLOWERY TWATS !!! I emigrated to Canada when I was 22, some 48 years ago and the thing I miss the most is British Humour - and not just on the Telly. There are many comic-like characters in every office and factory alike (especially in Liverpool).
I met the man who played Manuel. He was a very nice guy and a great actor who could have done so much more. You really need to watch all the episodes to appreciate the development of each character. The hamster sketch is my favourite - this week. 👀🧐😎😜🏴 Peace
The Major talking to the moose head was hilarious, and there was one infamously un-PC episode where the Major told Basil his story of taking a lady to see India. Also, check out the hotel sign at the beginning of every episode.
Even out of context the bits are still hilarious, but you haven't REALLY seen them until you've seen them as they occur within the complete episodes. An incredibly funny show!
Hi Amanda, As there were only 12 half hour episodes made it's no great hardship to watch them all. Arguably the greatest sitcom ever made in this country. The broken down car is my favourite. Regards.
Only beaten in polls by Only Fools And Horses. I liked the way Fawlty Towers was left at 12 classic episodes, rather than spoiling it with added ones later.
Hi Amanda , Connie Booth was John Cleese’s wife at this time, they condensed writing of four episodes into one , you need have to watch full episodes. Only twelve ever made, still the best thing I’ve ever seen on television. Every episode is incredibly complex and gutt wrenching funny, please watch them complete.. 🥰btw you’re fabulous 😁
Fawlty Towers is unrivalled. 12 episodes of pure genius. The man in the basket is 'The Kipper and the Corpse'. The man dies, but Basil thought he had poisoned him with a kipper and the chaos ensures. The Germans is has me crying with laughter all of the time. The whole episode is about Basil trying to put a moose head on a wall, and then the chaos ensues. When Basil (who has taken a knock to the head) takes the food order from those poor Germans it is a thing of beauty. And, the row with them it ends with quite possibly the greatest comeback line ever, but you have to watch the episode to hear it. You may note that in both episodes something simple is being done and then total chaos breaks out. That is pretty much every episode. Watch them in order. Just an FYI John Cleese was married to Connie Booth who plays Polly the housekeeper/maid and their marriage broke up and they were going through a divorce which happened between series 1 and 2 airing. I think that added to the Basil and Sybil relationship which was so iconic.
Always great to see any Fawlty Towers. But as many of your other subscribers have said, you are seeing clips out of context and you need to see the build-up to see just how great it was. Definitely one of my favourite comedies of all time.
Older Brit comedy is so funny. When you get a chance, you should check out the series' "Yes, Minister" & "Yes, Prime Minister" too. Fawlty Towers is manic to say the least, while Yes Minister/Prime Minister are a more sedate, satirical, comedy take on Westminster and UK government as a whole. Good reaction again, Amanda, thanks for cheering up a dull October night :)
Faulty Towers was a brilliant series. As a Sydneysider the Opera House comment cracks me up. The body in the basket is a guest who passed away in his sleep, as for the blow up doll - your on your own there. You had your face in your hand laughing and missed Fawlty doing the turnaround in the German segment. For me Basil the Rat episode ranks high. Enjoy them all.
Hi Amanda. Loved your reaction. As others have said, you need to watch all episodes. There cannot be a best episode. They are all absolutely brilliant.. Treat yourself to loads of laughter 😁
Ahhh I love your reaction. I love these type of videos. Music. TV shows. You name it. Not only that. Watching this reminds me of the genius of this show. I grew up as a boy watching this show every time it was on. Never gets old. Never gets tired. Always fresh. Funny. Crazy. Classic British comedy.
7:26 The fire alarm bit will always be my favourite scene, you actually feel for Basil as his frustration builds trying to explain the situation and his acting in this scene is just wonderful, his rage feels real! lol
The 12 episodes are The Wedding Party, The Germans, The Anniversary Party, A Touch Of Class, The Builders, Basil The Rat, The Hotel Inspectors, The Waldorf Salad, The Psychiatrist, Gourmet Night, Communication Problems and The Kipper & The Corpse!
Hi Amanda as others have said watch all 12 in any order, each episode has so many layers and setups for the final crescendo of hilarity and farce. The UK has produced so many great comedy shows over the years but each episode of Fawlty Towers is perfect. Enjoy
the American actress who plays Polly (Connie Booth) was originally hired to play a small part in the series. Such was her genius at comedy and dry humour, she began rewriting scenes making them funnier. John Cleese quickly recognized this and hired her as a permanent writer/producer.
for context the episode is called the Kipper and the corpse. The guy in the basket is dead and they're trying to hide him. The blowup doll is just a throw away gag
All of these are even funnier when you get some context from the episodes! I’d say just start from the beginning. Only two series were made but it’s still timeless! Keep up the good content :)
Best comedy ever and the episodes are so believable but you have to watch the whole thing.I remember watching it for the first time I nearly had to go to hospital
Great job, Amanda. This was the best; " you vicious bastard" to a car. John Ceese at his best. Thanks. Amanda, I haven't seen these for decades. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
I remember when I first saw "Is this a piece of your brain?" in the Mrs Richards episode, I was only about 12 and I was laughing for about six hours straight! I think everyone must have thought I'd gone mad! 🤣🤣🤣
These are timeless, I've watched Fawlty Towers countless times. Although, funny, the snippets without an earlier setup and you're missing out on an even bigger laugh. Like when he trips running behind the counter. What did he trip over?
The clip no7 The Psychiatrist you just watched is one of the outstanding ones.If u can watch the whole episode. You won't believe some of the scenes especially when the Aussie blonde books in about halfway through. The scene where he is tweaking her breasts thinking it was the light switch & Sybil walks in is just the start.
Number 6 was absolutely hilarious and I practically wet myself laughing, but you missed off the bit where Basil silent speaks to make the old woman think her hearing aid is broken. She turns it up and Basil raises his voice and blasts here ears! 😆 Of course number 1 is classic and so well-known!
Hi Amanda, I definitely recommend Rab C. Nesbitt which ran in 8 seasons from 1990 - 1998/9 then again for 2 short series + 3 specials. This is 'talk to the camera humour' with Rab himself playing someone who is the working class Scottish philospher whose central character is amazing. An absolute 'masterclass' of life among Govan side of Glasgow. There are some fantastic episodes especially in the first 3 or 4 series. Extremely well worth a watch. Sadly like a lot of things there is bad language but a couple of the expletives do not occur. Definitely well worth a watch - highly recommended.
Amanda, The whole series is great ,- I recommend Number 5 "the Hotel inspector" with the recently passed away Bernard Cribbons absolutely superb slap stick! Like Abba The two writers were divorced by the time the series was made! AMANDA DO YOU KNOW WHO THE WRITERS WERE? *CLUE* -THEY ARE BOTH IN THE SERIES IN EVERY EPISODE!
Amanda you should watch each full episode to get the best out of them. Sybil: “Basil, if I find out you’ve been gambling, you know what I’ll do.” Basil: “Well you’ll have to stitch them back on first!” 😅
Fawlty Towers is the best comedy show to ever hit television in any country. I have seen all 12 episodes at least 25 times each and to this day my best friend and I quote lines from every episodes as we know most of them by heart. Our favorite of favorites episode was one of the ones shown here, Waldorf Salad. We have memorized every line of that episode and sprinkle the lines into every phone conversation we have. "Satisfied customers, huh, hotdog!"
Another example of great British comedy. You should also check out Blackadder, Bottom, The Young Ones, Only Fools and Horses, The Two Ronnies and Morecombe and Wise (if you haven't already, of course)
Loved your reaction (when we get a snort we know you were impressed 😄). I have watched Fawlty Towers and English comedy since I was a kid (I am Australian FYI) and my favourite episode is "Communication Problems". You showed a clip with Mrs Alice Richards complaining about the hotel view.😂
Amanda, I am glad you really enjoy British humor & show's like faulty towers, the other ones watch are only fools & horses, on the buses, 2 Ronnies, Dad's Army, love thy neighbor, Monty Python,Benny Hill, these are some very funny British comedy shows of the past, You will love them,
Each episode was very carefully constructed over the 30 minute duration so clips never do it justice. One of my favourites involves Basil typing up a new menu because the chef is drunk. It doesn’t seem much as a 30 second clip but in its correct place it’s a perfect treat. Heartily recommend you watch the whole shows.
Agree! While some bits are funny and can stand alone for best results you need to watch the whole thing. You can though watch them largely in any order!
Glad you like the snippets Amanda, you will love the shows. My favorite is 'The Germans' of course. It may not be politically correct but I've heard even the Germans love it!! One of the famous lines of course is "I mentioned the War but I think I got away with it" Enjoy😀😀😀😀
Dear Amanda Rae-- There ARE NO "best episodes" of FAWLTY TOWERS (ne pa)? You can watch them all, over and over, and never fail to laugh at things you never noticed before. I can't imagine it ever being equaled. Thanks for putting it out for people who may have never even been aware of it, ;o))
Hey AR✌️ great reaction, it does help if your time permits to react to a full episode for context, every episode if full of Basil's sarcasm they are all hilarious imo. John Cleese used to do a character in Monty Python called the ministry of silly walks which has him doing lots of strange strutting about. Nice one👍✌️🙏
You need to watch them all. The scripts are masterpieces of comedic logic with gags being set up in a ridiculous but inevitable series of mistakes, mishaps and misrule. It has some of the best played comedy stereotypes in Manūel, Sibyl, the Major and Polly, as a straight foil to all the craziness.
Glad you enjoyed those clips but you should definitely watch the full episodes and when you carefully watch the opening credits showing the Fawlty Towers sign because in each episode the letters get rearranged to make other words. Also other classic English comedy worth watching is Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses
Hi Amanda, if you ever need cheering up or need something to watch on a Sunday, try either of these films. The 1st is (Clockwise 1986) while the 2nd is (A Fish Called Wanda 1988). They both feature John, in a similar mode to his Fawlty character. Enjoy !! :)
Afternoon Amanda... 10 very good clips.. fantastic in every way... thing is with FT there are 10 more you can show. then 10 more.. and more :) you get the drift... Love the Channel Peace n love.... Davey P.
Amanda you just have to watch all 12 episodes and see these outtakes in context, the buildup to each catastrophe are almost as good as the punch lines. Great subject Amanda, thanks so much.
My favourite bit was him hitting his car with branches. That was awesome 👍 LoL I'm a big fan of kitchen nightmares and God can I hear Gordon Ramsay lmao. 😁
Many, many years ago, my late great Uncle Jack used to own a couple of small hotels on the Dorset coast, and he looked, sounded, and acted like Basil Fawlty. He wasn't quite as insane as Basil, but almost! Whenever things went wrong (and they went wrong a lot), he would literally start running up and down stairs yelling, and slamming doors. And just like Basil, he was either fawning all over guests with a smarmy smile, or being incredibly rude to them. John Cleese once said that Basil Fawlty was based on a real life character he encountered while staying in a small hotel in the South West. Apparently the rest of the team left because they couldn't stand it, but he stayed for a week and made notes. And thus Basil Fawlty was born. I don't know if it was based on Uncle Jack, but my dad was convinced of it (and after all, he was his brother). The time frame, the place, and the person certainly fits. He was definitely an oddball, but we all miss him.
Amanda, Not sure if you live in/near London, or visit there from time to time but there is a "Faulty Towers" (spelling due to trademark I suspect) Dining Experience that does a dinner show several times per week. Eight of us went there this past summer and it was great (the food was good too). The three actors do a wonderful job and I'm sure you'd love it. Enjoy watching your channel.
There's so much energy put into these episodes you feel exhausted just watching them. Absolute comedy gold.

There are many comic-like characters in every office and factory alike (especially in Liverpool).
i need to watch mroe of this!
I met the man who played Manuel. He was a very nice guy and a great actor who could have done so much more. You really need to watch all the episodes to appreciate the development of each character. The hamster sketch is my favourite - this week. 👀🧐😎😜🏴
Peace
The Major talking to the moose head was hilarious, and there was one infamously un-PC episode where the Major told Basil his story of taking a lady to see India. Also, check out the hotel sign at the beginning of every episode.
To have 40+ years of entertainment out of a series of only 12 half hour episodes shows how brilliant they were. Genius. Still laughing at them now.🤣
Even out of context the bits are still hilarious, but you haven't REALLY seen them until you've seen them as they occur within the complete episodes. An incredibly funny show!
I haven’t gotten around to it yet but I will ☺️
Hi Amanda, As there were only 12 half hour episodes made it's no great hardship to watch them all. Arguably the greatest sitcom ever made in this country. The broken down car is my favourite.
Regards.
Ps. If you watch them all make a point of looking at hotel sign at beginning titles, they change it several times.
Only beaten in polls by Only Fools And Horses. I liked the way Fawlty Towers was left at 12 classic episodes, rather than spoiling it with added ones later.
I agree wholeheartedly that this is the best sitcom ever produced for TV in any country, anywhere in any timeframe.
You have to watch the whole shows amanda ..brilliant ..the germans was brilliant 😘😘
I think that added to the Basil and Sybil relationship which was so iconic.
and the great line
why are you all staring at me?
sybil walks to him and says "you have a kipper sticking out of your jumper"
A brilliant sitcom. Please react to all of it.
Can't, the copyright will remain active for all our life times
@@Jamie_D React to half an episode at a time? Distort the picture?
Another great reaction video. They are all great episodes. communication issues is my favourite episode.
You need to see the whole episodes to really appreciate them
Faulty Towers was a brilliant series.
You're right, but I still love Communication Problems with Mrs Richards.
The Germans was actually three themes in one episode. The best by far.
Ahhh I love your reaction. I love these type of videos. Music. TV shows. You name it. Not only that. Watching this reminds me of the genius of this show. I grew up as a boy watching this show every time it was on. Never gets old. Never gets tired. Always fresh. Funny. Crazy. Classic British comedy.
7:26 The fire alarm bit will always be my favourite scene, you actually feel for Basil as his frustration builds trying to explain the situation and his acting in this scene is just wonderful, his rage feels real! lol
"Is no fire! Is only bell!"
the full episodes were brilliantly put together same as fools and horses
The Kipper and the Corpse is my personal favourite, Manual climbing in the basket had me breathless too, with laughter!!
ill have a look :)
The best comedy ever made. The Psychiatrist is my favourite comedy episode ever. You have to watch the whole thing. Basil is absolutely crazy.
:))
Enjoy
The one with the Rat is one of my favourites, also the Fawlty Towers sign at the start of the program changes to say different things.
I started watching the second series Amanda back in '79 when I first started school. Really funny and it still makes me chuckle 43 years later. x
the American actress who plays Polly (Connie Booth) was originally hired to play a small part in the series. Such was her genius at comedy and dry humour, she began rewriting scenes making them funnier. John Cleese quickly recognized this and hired her as a permanent writer/producer.
And married her.
for context the episode is called the Kipper and the corpse. The guy in the basket is dead and they're trying to hide him. The blowup doll is just a throw away gag
Just watch all both seasons consisting of 12 episodes in total they're all hilarious 😂
All of these are even funnier when you get some context from the episodes! I’d say just start from the beginning. Only two series were made but it’s still timeless! Keep up the good content :)
I'm so glad you laugh and snort at our British humour Amanda
For me the best sketch is the one that most episodes open with: "On those trays" vs "Uno, dos, tres".
Absolutely!
I think one of the funniest episodes is the Physiologist in Fawlty Towers,a must see.
3:59 - I find this the best scene.
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
you cannot possibly pick one episode over another all 12 episodes are legendary
theyre all great in their own way. watch them all
I love your videos and your opinions , especially as you get straight into the topics without any unnecessary chit chat.
I love Fawlty Towers. It makes me laugh.
Of course number 1 is classic and so well-known!
"Is this a piece of your brain?!" 😂
@@skylined5534 Yep! That’s the one! 😜👍🏻
what do you expect to see out of the window of a torquay hotel?
All these brilliant scenes are even funnier when seen in a full episode. The context adds so much more to them. By the way, only 12 were ever made. 😂
My mom was British and I was raised on sarcastic English humor, love it!
Buy the full dvd set Amanda, its classic British comedy, nothing beats it. Even 50 years on! X
Brilliant, made me chuckle again. I think number 2 was the film 'A fish called Wanda'. That's also a great film. All the best...
You showed a clip with Mrs Alice Richards complaining about the hotel view.😂
ahah im so glad you're enjoying it :)
Amanda, I am glad you really enjoy British humor & show's like faulty towers, the other ones watch are only fools & horses, on the buses, 2 Ronnies, Dad's Army, love thy neighbor, Monty Python,Benny Hill, these are some very funny British comedy shows of the past, You will love them,
My personal favourite is The Health Inspector episode. Absolutely brilliant.
Good to see these again. Difficult to believe they made so few episodes. I strongly recommend you watch the entire, Basil the Rat episode!
It's seeing your reaction that always makes me laugh, more than the clips
Re Cleese's walk at the end: you should see him in the Ministry of Silly Walks sketch from Monty Python, where the walk originated!
Glad you enjoyed those clips but you should definitely watch the full episodes and when you carefully watch the opening credits showing the Fawlty Towers sign because in each episode the letters get rearranged to make other words. Also other classic English comedy worth watching is Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses
when you see the full episodes these clips can be seen in thier full context ,, outstanding comedy writing all 12 episodes are outstanding
Davey P.
The best bit is the start of episode one and finishing at the end of episode twelve. Best comedy ever, bar none, pure genius. Cheers
Amanda you just have to watch all 12 episodes and see these outtakes in context, the buildup to each catastrophe are almost as good as the punch lines.
Great subject Amanda, thanks so much.
One of the funniest British comedys of all time, you should watch all 12 episodes x
He was definitely an oddball, but we all miss him.
thats so incredible! i hope that it is true :)
Watch them all every minute is priceless
Yes absolutely comedy 🎭 gold unfortunately that would never be shown on prime time tv in 2022 it would cause a melt down of complaints 🤬 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Amanda, The last sketch with Basil doing the straight leg march, reminds me of a Monty Python sketch "The Ministry of Funny Walks".
