    I actually serve the serving point on the bow, and then place the nock on. For strings that we have to send I do a "Rough set" of the nock in case the customer has thicker or thinner arrows. On the bow you serve from just below the sight block bottom screw hole to the bottom of the grip.

    Hi People, I just wanted to add a comment in regards to post's on this video on other web sites. Please be advised this is the way that "I" make the string. This may not be the rule of making a string, but it is the best way that I have found. In regards to cutting of the string, this does not damage the string at all due to the way that I serve the string. This is why i backward serve the string. It add's extra protection and stops the string from wanting to pull apart. Not everyone may agree with the way it has been made, but I get almost no string creep after my string are done.
    What I have found is that my string's tend to last longer and shoot a little faster than some others. String making is a personal choice, and i have made this video to enable other people to try and make their own. By all means bag my method if you wish, but if you know better, then please feel free to make your own video to explain. But I would put my string up against any one else in regards to strength and performance.

    Thanks, very informative.
    Marke me think that if it takes approx an hour to make a string, plus materials then the price I pay for my strings make them good value for money.
    Thanks for a good instructive video.

    This is one of the best tutorials on the subject that I have watched. Great work. Sounds like you are from Down Under. May I ask what string jig you would recommend. I'd like to be able to make strings for both traditional bows and also compound bows. I'm in the USA...hopefully you might have a specific model in mind that serve me for many years and would be readily available to me here. Thank you!

      Hi Sorry for the very late reply. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it. However I purchased it from a company in the uk called ALT SERVICES. I did however have to make some modifications to it in order for it to be able to get the tension that I needed. You need to remover the original Bolts from the end’s and make a new housing! I ended up using 20mm bolts and a much thicker Aluminium housing. This lasted for years until i gave the jig away a year or so ago.

    It could be the beer talking, but I think your video rocked! You were great at seeing from others perspective, too. In a weird way it made me miss Steve Irwin. I could have done without the cirrhosis close up on your right elbow, though. The complicated looping at the ends were difficult for me to understand. I wish you could have done it on a model with 1/4" rope so I could understand it better. Great job!!

    If you wouldn't serve those loops that tight you would not get all the twists that you need to hide, and you would also get straight loops that don't want to twist on to themselves because of the inside twists.

      HI, there are many ways you can do it. On the jog that i had, i had actually made markers to indicate where servings should go based on the size of the string/bow combination. However in most cases once i had made the string then I would normally serve it on the bow to get it right. For standard strings i would serve quite a large area about a Hand and a half in width. But for my own strings or well trained archers i would only serve about 3 inches worth, just enough to 3 fingers on. By having the smaller serving area and having a fat string (18 strands) it gave the string much more punch at the release. A 16 strand with be a little lighter and maybe a touch faster, but lack’s the punch for distance and power. (Just my observations) 18 strand strings are heavier and slightly slower, however they also give more outward force behind the arrow… see how your go and I hope this helps. Oh! For centre serving i mainly used only Majesty serving or a very slick serving material. Standard serving is a little corse and can give a little extra grip and will not allow for a smooth and slick release. For compounds though i always used a standard serving material if a release aid was involved.

    hi there, No I do not really wax the string. Once I have done the top an Bottom I twist and then render the string before I serve it. I find that this locks the twist's into the string thus also making the string much faster to shoot!

    Hello mr.Gannon, appreciated the how to, but iam interested at your tool that you have and use there. I would like to see more of it so i could hopefully do it as well maybe to make a list of items. Iam allso interested in how to put in the silencers, how to protect the point of the string where the arrow sits on. Much appreciated

      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, and so sorry for the late reply. To answer you question’s. The Jig i bought from ALT Services in the UK. I have modified it to use bigger bolts so i can apply a much higher amount of tension. The serving jog i used was a Bieter serving jig. This also comes with all of the tools you need as well. To protect the arrow nock, serve this area a little tighter than the ends. You can place a littler more wax in that point, this will also help with cleaner arrow release. On my own string i would do a manual served nock points, instead of using a brass nocks. This gives better clearance and smoother release.

    Hey Sheldon,
    brilliant tutorial that. Must give it a go when I get a chance. Question for ya; is there any particular reason you make your strings from scratch when selling new bows, as opposed to just putting a ready made fastflight string on the bow that is sized to fit the bow length. Just curious as to what the thinking is/advantages of using a custom string?
    Keep up the great videos, they are a brilliant resource for us archery newbies!

      HI Tony, Can you please clarify which distance. Do you mean at the post ends? Or the total length from posts to posts. If it is just at the ends for the servings then they are about 20cm apart there of. From end to end is totally dependent on the actual string length.

    Very good video. Showed a lot of techniques I hadn’t considered and will use. But 2 things that are not explained.
    1 why have your jigs set to 45 degrees ?
    2 why cut the red and black string at the end of the video ?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The strings are cut for balance. So the number of strands between each colour are even. Having the string in off set helps create the length of the serving point and end loops. TBH i was taught that way and never really questioned it. BUt it makes sense when you are actually making the string.

    Hi Sheldon,
    Great video. thanks
    How does one stop the 2 bundles of string separating ? as for example you do 20 strands and served the loops and center but now the 2 bundles of string stay apart or the string does not stay as one big bundle. IS it to do with putting in twists before doing the center serving ?
    Regards

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, yes to a point. The centre servings will hold them in place got a degree. I find that end servings are the key to keeping them locked in place. You will see in the video I use a separator to get the balance point of the two different colours, and once you have done you servings the string will naturally twist. Use the separator to slide up and down the string to get the twist balance right. It should even out, but do this step before you do the centre.

    very nice tutorial i really enjoyed it but i have a question do you ever serve the strings in the center to prevent the string from unraveling at the point you nock the arrows. or do you have any tips on how to prevent this issue with homemade strings.

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the very late reply. The short answer is NO. You can only serve to the points that i have outlined. If you follow this video to the letter you should not have any issues with the servings. I have in the past had them come undone, but that has been to not sealing the “Burn Off” correctly. I have simply just unwound, trimmed and done a small serving to replace.

    great and informative, just one question, the strings for the bow is not the same as the "wrapping" of end strings correct? What are the strings used for the string itself and the string for wrapping? I see BCY8125 mentioned... could we use aramide thread?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There, you can essentially use any string you like for the main strands, however you must not go to thick otherwise you will struggle to get nocks that will fit right. The serving at the ends is Majesty serving, this comes from Japan. However I also use a BCY serving material as well depending on the cost of the string for the user.

    • @sheldongannon4024

      Essentially yes it is, however when making the strand splits and tension strings you need to do a bit of touch and feel. This Jig design does struggle making some compound strings. But all the compound strings that I made worked and sounded awesome, but they are much more work and very time consuming due to harmony balance.

    • @sheldongannon4024

      Sorry for the late reply. Always best to serve the string when it is on the bow. This way you serve just the right area. I have done a mixture of short servings and long serving’s. However I try to make the centre serving ½” either side of my fingers, so the string isn’t two slow.

  • @shadetreehandyman

    I am curious about the logic for having extra strings and then removing two near the end.... I've watched several of these type videos and no one else seems to do that.

    • @Figjamxlaststar
      @Figjamxlaststar หลายเดือนก่อน

      The reason for removing the two strings is Balance. If the string had the extra two threads it was essentially FAT. By removing the extra two it made it smaller whilst keeping it balanced. I just found.. in my experience that the string was a little faster and also quieter. However my way may not be the “correct way” but i found it worked and people that used my strings never complained.

  • @leondgim
    @leondgim 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw most of ready-made strings are un-twisted(between top and bottom end serving) and center-served.
    I got the impression from there that we should have string un-twisted, then center-served, then twisted/waxed to meet the tuning need.
    from the video after top/bottom end served, you twisted and waxed the string, I guess the string will stay that way while it's center-served, right?
    so is it pre-twisted/waxed(as in the video), then center-served, then gets twisted/waxed more for tuning?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, and so sorry for the very late reply. Even though the string is twisted. When you do the centre serving you will find that it will cause the string in the direction that you are serving to twist up more, this tends to happen when doing it on a bow! However, in saying that if you serve it on a. Jog you can get the tension high enough that the twist will be bound into the centre serving. But you can also take a couple of the twists out before you render.

  • @sheldongannon4024
    @sheldongannon4024  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Off rthe shelf strings are not exact. and you find that many riser/limbs combinations are not correct either. So a standard 68" string may suit some bows but not correct for others. That is why we make every string for every bow that goes out the door. Not to mention our quality is 1000% better than a premade string!

    Hi Sheldon, thanks for the nice tutorial. I'd like to start making my own strings, for a final string of 62.5" what would you recommend as the starting length in the jig?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  ปีที่แล้ว

      What ever you length aim for about 2” shorter than the desired end length. You will find you will get heaps of stretch, however, in saying that no 2 strings will be the same no matter how hard you try. You might need to add twist’s or decrease the amount of twists that you need. Sometimes it can take a couple of goes to get it right. Also i found that even though I always used the same string type, some colours behave differently especially when blending. So there is an element of trial and error required.

    Can you advise on which string and strand composition you might use on a Hoyt 25" ion-x with long quattro foam limbs (42lb). Frank

      I always used 18 strands. If you managed to find the video I did on the limb test’s you would hear how quiet the bow was.

    Why did you cut one red and one black string? And why didn't you just use 18 strings to begin with? Otherwise fantastic job !!!

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Martinez hi there it is to do with balance and even balance. To do 18 you have to do an uneven pass. The way that I do it leave's the number of passes the same so you can stretch the string more and it will not alter the integrity. People may suggest otherwise but i challenge anyone to the fact that this way works just as well!

      @sheldongannon4024  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI Mate, the tool is part of the beiter string making kit. And to answer your question the reason that I remove two strands is due to balance. Now i know that many archers will disagree with what I do. The simple answer is I know this works. It make the string even and true.

    Just curious, most strings I buy for longbow and recurve have serving at or near the center, I notice you did not serve the center of this string where a crimp on nock point would normally be used. So the question I have is why? Thanks

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi There, you do this once this is on the bow. Then you serve so the center serve is correct!

    Hi sheldon, when building your strings are you making them to the exact size needed or are you giving them extra to account for your twists? I have been having an issue where my string length is not consistent. any advice would be great thank you

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jerrold Munson HI There, before i explain i just want to say this is what I do, it may not be rule of thumb, but this is what I find that works. I actually make the string about a 1/2" longer than it should at the start. After you service the first end then you need to wind the tension up even more. This will actually in most cases increase the length by about 3/4'". Once final serving is done then apply about 20 twist's to the string prior to the rendering of the string. Why do i render, it melts the wax into the strand's and locks the twists in place and will stop increase creep in the string. The best thing you can do is leave it on the jig for about 24 hrs under tension winding it up little by little over the 24 hr's. Once that has been done place on your bow, adjust the twist up or down then do your center serving only after it is correct. This should lock the string in place and your string should not creep or lengthen any more. Now, again not everyone will agree with me on all of this, but I find that it works, also I find doing the servings very tight this helps to prevent any string creep. The most creep i have ever had is about 1/8". Hope this helps.

    I think you forgot the nocking point serving area, or is that only for compound with mechanical release?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There, no i didn't forget about it, I deliberately left that out. As the knocking point really needs to be done whilst on the bow. AS there is no such thing as the same knocking serve, all bows are different the the serving distance can change form bow to bow. Would be a whole other video to explain that right!

    Hiya sheldon, thanks for the video upload really helpful.
    I'm just wondering though I have recently bought all the equipment to make my own string jig but don't know how wide the pillars have to be and also how far in on the Aluminium box tubing?
    One other thing how big do you have the loops on the string at?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI there, The loop is not an easy thing to work out as it takes a little practice to gauge it right. But normal length would be about 4-5 inches long of serving to make up the loop it self. Some people like a smaller loop i like a slightly longer loop as it allows for a little error in the shot!

    Why did you cut the strands? And can this method be used on a recurve crossbow 260# draw?

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will work on any style of string. The reason I cut is to get an even amount of strand's of each color. IF you don't you will have odd strands. However it is all dependent on how many strands that you want. And I find you get a better and cleaner twist!

    you didn't say why you used 20 and cut out two< WHY> and you where long on string and didn't explain it, 3/4 of inch long, changes poundage?

    • @Figjamxlaststar
      @Figjamxlaststar ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason I take two out is due to thickness. I am running an 18 strand string. IN regards to length, this is what the twists are for. When making a string you allow a little length for placing twist and locking it down when you do your middle serve. Personally i found a 18strand string to have a little more punch to it vs a 16 strand. Also i noticed in my time that 18 strands was also a lot more quiet than a 16 strand. However: As with all things in Archery, you need to find what works for you. What feels good what feels bad. You are correct that length can change poundage, however it all depends on the Riser Limb combination. So brands prefer and recommend that you run a much higher brace height, and some lower. I always opt for around 9.5 to 93/4 inch brace height. However there are some that like it at 10”. The idea behind the video is to show how to make a string for yourself. Lastly if using two colours you get a better balance of colours at 18 strand. Hope this explains everything for you.

    Why cut the two strands out at then end If you want an 18 strand string then just wind it round for 18 strands?????

    • @sheldongannon4024
      @sheldongannon4024  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you want even colors! You can split the tie off at either end, however cutting them loose does not effect the string at all! But it does make for a better balanced string!
