  • With all the recent buzz about FFXIV dying or dropping in numbers, I wanted to give my perspective. As someone who has been playing FFXIV since January 2015, I've seen a lot, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to give my takes and dispel some click-bait.

As a fellow fossil (been playing since Syrcus Tower came out) definitely a quiet period right now. It happens a lot. Remember during early Heavensward game felt like dying out. We're really missing some grindy casualish content now that people can do together.

They could have made Dawntrail like an introduction Addon and "jump in point" for new players like ARR was, with a focus on changeing the foundation of the game, with seamless connected zones like in ARR, with a more grounded story, adventure and exploration, change the dungeon structure, give us some rpg elements and class progression, new companions, without a world ending crisis, without the scions... but no, they didnt even try to do this... There is so much that's needs improvement and the old formula needs to change. Also Square Enix needs to invest more into the dev team, i want to see these changes soon and not in 2030...
like instead of always doing 6 zones per addon, add only 4-5 zones, so we can get more side content for patches etc. OR add a post-addon MSQ zone that is a part of the world, something you can travel to, and not a lame NPC that just teleports you into the instance.
The quantity and timing of zone/dungeon/trial unlocks has gotten so predictable that it actively hurts my enjoyment of the MSQ.
After 10 years this needs a change...
As much as i love the scions, they overstayed their welcome, their character arcs are pretty much all finished, Endwalker was the perfect ending for them. (Some- or all of them shoud have died in EW, their story was finished and it would have been a great end... OR make them disappear for more than 2 expansions before letting them show up again) not enough happens with them in Dawntrail, all of them behave like cardboard cutouts, they are back just because they are fan favorites... "sigh"
A timeskip in the Story would be amazing, giving the scions and other characters a complete redesing and new lore, new goals, shift in conflics... something i thought they would do after the end of Endwalker but no...
    FF14 mobile for example.
Seeing all these animation improvements, animations for slide casting, better lighting and quality of life options brings me to the question - what has CBU3 and Square been doing all those years with FF14? Where are those things in the OG? I know the engine is old, but adding some animations can't be that hard...
The formula is stale, and the devs stopped to innovate or try more risky things a long time ago.

    • @Pyra_Sydannia

I believe they mentioned thinking about the "jump in point" and decided not to. I know there was a lot of back and forth about that in the community too.
I'd love to also see more investment in the dev team, we need fresh blood at some point too to help keep things lively. A reduction in zones would be great - I'd rather less zones that are more impactful then a quick "hi - oh wait we gotta go, bye!"
As far as mobile, I wonder if it's because it's a completely different team working on it. I think it would be nice for them to diversify a little bit so that we can get some new ideas and not a same old routine. Thanks for your thoughts!!

Longterm player and hardcore raider here. Imo FFXIV is one of the best games to play, especially since we can play a couple expansions for free till we have to pay subs. There is so many things you can do as newer or casual player and i can only recommend everyone to atleast give it a try and play it till HW. The early stages of the game can be very boring and it took me a few tries aswell to finally stick to it in the past. There is so much to discover and a lot of group content to do, most people are friendly and always up for a chat. For longterm players the updates are lacking content after doing nearly everything already, so most of the times from my experience i login to help people with savage/ultimates/reclear FRU and mostly what keeps me going are my friends i made along the way.

I am a 6+ year player, so not quite paleozoic but Im in the upper cretaceous of 14 (probl'y spelled that wrong, silly science names). From my perspective, it's obviously not dying, but the trend is not getting any better. The game is playing it safe while offering nothing new to me anymore. The raids, which I adore, just feel stagnant to me, I feel like any new savage raid is just a cavalcade of reused mechanics with a new coat of paint. People say that is normal for MMOs, I say why go with what is normal? This is the game that nuked its first version and made a brand new MMO within 2 years and saved a catastrophic failure and turned it into great success, but now it wants to be...normal?
The Dev Team is spineless and uncommunicative, they rigidly stick to the same formula and doll out slop, and we have to wait 4 months for the slop as well, whilist making jobs less and less stressful. As a veteran of this game, I personally feel insulted. I seriously have to wait 6 months each time to do the new coat of paint protean/ pair/light party stack, spread, stack debuff spread debuff and defamation debuff have? Get a promising normal mode only for the devs to fill the savages with mind numbing bullshit just to pad the fight to a "regular FF" fight length?
"Well go play something you big meanie, I still love the game!" - Welp, Im glad to let you know I mostly have, once I clear FRU, I am probl'y just gonna quit altogether, if not just wait for 7.55 and binge the normal mode content in like 5h (because that's the standard we've accepted for non high end stuff).
Unless this game picks its guts off the floor and stop being spineless cowards playing it safe I am done. You're not wrong for still enjoying it, but Im not sugarcoating my opinion anymore.

    • @Pyra_Sydannia
      @Pyra_Sydannia  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

I don't blame you for airing your opinion! I find it totally valid. I think a lot of people are frustrated by the stagnation of the game.
I air on the side of optimism, but not blindly. I want this to continue to be my favorite game for another 10 years, and it just very well may be - but I do agree that the dev team is having a bit of issues that need to be resolved soon in order to keep people around and happy.

What is there to burnout from? I am baffled by this fking comment every time I hear it from people. What do you burn out from? Expert roullete? It's not burn out, it's stagnation and boredom. How many times can you shoo people to "play other games" before "return to FF14" is off the menu?
I don't want to "play other games" I want the game that captured my heart in Stormblood and Shadowbringers to stop looking like a mundane salary man and start being a rockstar again.

I have to agree with the whole "a chance to try new concepts" statement. People were saying before even EW that the game wasn't innovating much and was stagnating in content because it rarely if ever changes but now they've done a full 180 and now complain when they tried new things near the end of EW and now DT.
People need to realise that they can't expect the game to become fresh again if they don't allow the devs to experiment and try new avenues for content.

Ive been playing world of warcraft for 18 years and every now and again i get really tempted to try out FF14, ill be honest, its the visual style of the game and how visually busy boss fights look that put me off, but every wow player i know that has tried it out has had a blast in that game. And still play it to this day.
Every MMO goes through ups and downs on active players and i think something that is contributing to FF14s small dip is the fact that World of Warcraft over the last year or so has been getting content updates much more frequently than normal, so the WoW players that also enjoy FF14 are probably not finding the time to jump back into Eorzea, but they will be back!

Oh hii, I just found your channel! ^.^ It's nice to hear the perspective of a veteran player. I started in 2022 and have only recently finished the msq of endwalker. XD There was and still is so much to explore, the cities are packed, my fc is active and there are always people to talk to, it doesn't feel like a "dead" game to me at all. But I understand that as a new player of course there is way more to still do so I can only compare this to my WoW experience which I've been playing for 15+ years. Honestly I really dislike the online negativity, most of it is indeed just clickbait because negativity attracts more attention (like look at asmongold, lol). There are a bunch of players like me who just enjoy the game in silence, without posting on social media. That being said, as a casual player even I felt WoW going downhill bigtime, especially after shadowlands. My friendlist that was usually full of active players who loved the game suddenly became empty. I had nobody to play with anymore and didn't like the direction WoW was going in, so like many others I quit and tried FFXIV instead. WoW did feel dead af,, but look at what happened now, they improved and recovered, now people are saying to leave FFXIV for WoW?! All this to say, it's normal for this to happen. People get tired of playing the same game for years. I'm not worried about it at all. Though of course disliking the direction of the game, the msq, etc, all of that is very valid and to those who feel this way I'd recommend to take a break and come back when there's new content or you feel ready and refreshed. :)

I've recently returned to FFXIV after an 8-year hiatus. Just finished Stormblood, now in the early parts of Shadowbringer. What I'm noticing is that the questing areas of these expansions are practically empty of other players. No one to do FATEs with, etc. Every now and then I might see someone else but it's very very rare. Just as I start to think maybe the game is dead, then I warp back to Limsa and see where everyone is! I think what SE has failed to do (at least so far as what I have seen in my current progression) is give players reason to return to older zones. In WoW, no matter which zone you're in there is almost always going to be multiple people also in that area working on something, because there is so much to work on. Maybe this is something SE has resolved in future zones, I dunno. You might also ask "OK so why don't you just go play WoW?" Well, as much as I do genuinely love WoW, I am very upset with Blizzard right now and refuse to give them any more money for at least the next two years, maybe longer. So, SE gets my business instead.

OMG I feel you completely! I've complained for years that we need reasons as active players to go back into old zones. I'd love to help others but I have no reason to go back unless someone in my FC needs help and I think there should be a better system to returning back to those zones and being active in areas that were once booming.
I'm glad you stumbled across folks - unfortunately, people in future expansions from where you are at tend to stick around those areas, even after the core piece of content is done. I am definitely guilty of that.
If you haven't already, I'd say join an FC! Community is the best way to connect imo!

If there are doomers saying "it's dying" on one side, you are the complete opposite, white knight and cope no matter what. Perfect example is you saying that the team was taking risks, however the biggest issue with FFXIV is that the formula is so formulaic that there is no risk. The story revolves around dungeons at levels 91/93/95/97/99/100 and trials at 93/99/100. Characters must appear at specific times to allow for trusts. Savage tiers launch on X.05, X.2, and X.4 always with the same number of bosses. All dungeons have the exact same layout of move down a corridor and fight two to three groups of mobs, move down another corridor and fight mobs, fight a boss, and then repeat.
Job design has been simplified down so that all friction has been removed and the DPS sequence is the exact same every encounter with NO variance. CC/interrupts are almost completely unused because most mobs hit like wet noodles, or just cast circle, cone, or straight line AOEs that are easy to avoid. Healers can heal entire encounters with oGCD spells. Tanks have so many defensive abilities that they never have to worry about anything.
People have far more issues than the story being an overly verbose drag written by a sad millennial with no friends.
It hurts to say all this, but SE NEEDS the criticism. These overly positive, everything is great, we are just in a lull videos DO NOT help and one of the primary reason we are where we are. I say this as an original 1.0 player and someone who has held a sub without interrupt since 2.0 launched, however I finally canceled my sub 3 weeks ago. I've been in the same FC for 8 years and we've always maintained 60+ members online even during lulls, but when I logged out the last time 3 weeks ago there were 10 online at peak hours. Our GM, and my best friend, was logging in only to do some maintenance stuff for the FC. :(
There are issues and they need to be discussed and taken seriously.

      @Pyra_Sydannia  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hey Bryan! Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes there are plenty of issues and criticism should be given, however, that's not the point of this video. The point of this video is to combat the blatant BS that's been spread about the game in utter decline.
I may get into a longer format critique of the game as I have also seen issues too, but that's not an approach or a piece that I have fully coordinated yet.
As far as these videos not helping, you're right to your opinion. I believe that they may help those who are not used to the cycles of this game and those who might have only heard the fear-mongering "this game is dead-TURN BACK NOW" critiques as those videos are also not helpful.

I feel you. The formula is stale, the game shows its age, and the devs stopped to innovate or try more risky things a long time ago.
They have essentially released the same re-skinned game design for the better part of 8 years now.
like instead of always doing 6 zones per addon, add only 4-5 zones, so we can get more side content for patches etc. OR add a complete MSQ zone with the patches.
Dungeons have been streamlined so much, it feels like the devs don't know how to make anything different anymore... Sure, they made the dungeons harder with DT, but thats not enough, they need to change more...
I just hope Yoshi P and the dev team take the criticism to heart. There is so much that's needs improvement and the old formula needs to change. Also Square Enix needs to invest more into the dev team.

Queues are hopping on Crystal seven days a week and Aether's PF is packed. The drop in player count is like the difference between playing DRG and VPR in savage content - measurable, but negligible, and predictable too. 7.2 is coming. 7.3 promises a new Limited Job. The schedule hasn't changed and these "downtime periods" are baked into the business model as well as the gameplay cycle - not just for you to take a break, but for Square to fallow the land on the money farm.

Yeah, casuals are complaining they don't have content, and thats a lie, I know they all don't have every class leveled to 100, completed every relic weapon, completed every deep dungeon, and expansion area, ect. There's plenty to do. You just want to complain that there's nothing new for you to do. Quit complaining, go back and do older content you never did, and if that doesn't work for you, take a break until there is something you want to do.

Except DT is the first expansion that had fewer players than last, It's the first expansion to lose so many players in the x.0 patch. And I think that the bad story has put a spotlight on flaws that people who don't care too much about story has pointed out for years. DT also has the slowest patch cadence that got slower and slower since SHB. FFXIV's model of having barebones content on its release and slowly add things over 2 years makes the launch very dull and incentivises you to not play until the last patch.
The game has flaws. It's ok to point it out. And shame on the youtuber for exaggerating the rage over the state of the game just so they can then turn around and say that people complaining are exaggerating. Such a scummy tactic to downplay opposition.

But for the most part Dawntrail is the best the game has ever been (excluding the story), we have so F'ing much content these days compared to what we had in HW or STB.
If anything, the game is in a healthy position now, but obviously for some people there's not enough, or they've done the things they wanted to do this expansion, and are playing other stuff while waiting for new updates.

Yeah I honestly just mainly think it's people trying to justify their burnout by fully blaming it on individual aspects of the game (ie, story). Like you, I've had gaps where I've gone a month or more without playing, it's natural when you have thousands of hours in a game you've been playing for years. When 7.1 dropped I blasted the game every single day for couple months but rn I'm mostly raid logging for FRU (with an exception for Chaotic) and it's pretty chill; think a lot more people need to be okay with doing that and the communities' relationship with the game and the devs would be a lot more healthy.

I started playin XIV at the tail end of Heavensward and up until the infamous 5.2 patch. My feelings about the game are numerous but put concisely I'd say that the game was made too accessible, especially with the flattening of class designs. This focus in accessibility also manifested itself in the social policing in the game and the community was never the same after the ToS changes at the end of Stormblood, 24 man raids went from boysterous and fun to quiet with only the protected "identities" being able to freely boast about anything knowing full well that any word against them would be a bannable offense. This damocles sword ruined half public chatter in the game and the rampant degenerate talk (which only really belong to private spaces) ruined the other half. I've logged on a free week sometime in 2023 and the first thing I saw when going to Limsa for a quest was open gay petplay and honestly I'd rather work overtime than deal with that crap.

i started in 2.3 and have been playing over 12 years. Dawntrail was a huge letdown. their story pacing was really fast when they could have just done dawnservant race as 7.0. wuk lamat is shoved in your face. you know that thing of you aren't the main character in 12...yeah..you aren't the main character in dawntrail. you are babysitting the main character wuk lamat. we ended on a high then it was teased a vacation where we would be adventurers again with the eye catching scions vs scions. we got none of that. we were babysitting what i can assume is a shut in lioness who barely knows anything about the land she wants to rule. competing with 3 brothers, one with daddy issues, two head doing the wrong things for the right reason and catboi who is smitten with foreign tech so much hes willing to force his homeland to adapt to it. it was laughably known that wuk would win the race. moment you met curly, larry and moe you knew she would win. then lets bring in the fact this expac was basically high school musical culminating in that horrid bomb train making montage. then lets go second half with one of the reflections that fell thanks to 5th astral era lala fell from the source. then lets throw in technology like nothing. a ruler who is just elidibus (shb) x golbez but a program error has made her just focus on gathering souls for her pc program people. it was horrendous. instead of changing trajectory...we get more wuk forced into our laps with a really stupid dino boss fight in the lastest patch. not to mention a chaotic raid that has more toxicity from the community then ever...then we got eden ultimate..yet more stuff most wont do. the only things this expac had going for it was the maps. they were beautiful. the npcs were good but the rest wasn't. IF you don't like what we all have to say...then boohoo. we have a right as paying customers to give our opinion. it was actually because of the story that lots stopped playing and now with the bungle on their end of the blist...we probably will lose more to fear of being stalked. square isn't in a good place right now and they need to right themself to get back on that footing they loved with shb and endwalker

DT is a big tribute to Ff9(My fave FF) and it brought so much nostalgia. Aside from that this expansion ignited so much emotion especially during the "Living Memory Part". I disagree, I played from beta 2.0 seen all the ups and downs, and now I've fully quit. Same tired mechanics, same story beats, nothing has changed since hw just maintained and/or gotten worse. I am not the only one. People from my static and fc have quit, with a fair amount taking a break and giving it one more expac. If nothing actually changes, the game will be on a downward spiral. If that change is more class identity or a major change in how the story plays out, who knows. I don't think the game is quite dying yet, but I do know we are not alone. Game has felt stagnant for a long time now and thats where a lot of us are coming from.

Yo did you know there a group of people who doesn't like Marvel Rivals right now and aren't playing it o shitttttt. I think the game is fine the general population has said the story is crap this time around but everything else has been fine. But if you listen to the terminally online youtube comments or twitch chats you'd think those opinions numbers in the millions which I don't believe.
These things people keep saying they like in an mmo "class identity" "open world" I don't believe either, if they all liked it so much they'd play wow or gw2 but they don't. GW2 gives you every illusion of choice you want when building your "class identity" and that game isn't getting this surge of millions of players these comments keep talking about. I think the game will be fine it will obviously lose some players cause the story is bad this expac. But gamers are just one 3 minute trailer away from forgetting whatever bs they where harping on. You know it and I know it.
