I tried to convert so many people, forced my friends to listen to lateralus all the way through, etc. I even was the drummer in a whole ass Tool tribute band...and we talked about Tool EVEN MORE. i was so into it i didnt even realize how annoying i was and how much people didnt really give af
Hot take but I think Tool fans who aren’t musicians are even more annoying that Tool fans who are.
At least praising them for their musicianship is warranted and yes Maynard does have exceptional lyric writing abilities but if you’re gonna talk my ear off about the Fibonacci sequence and how “deep” they are then you’ve lost me.

As a "Deft Ones" enjoyer, I get torn a new one in almost every video, yet I keep coming back.
Thats what I enjoy about this channel. I can listen to finn make fun of artists I dont like then I get humbled about my own opinions when he makes fun of bands/genres I do like. Everybody wins/loses on this channel.

Maybe I'm just old, but i do not understand the appeal of sleep token. Im not at all saying they are talentless or suck by any means, but i don't see how they are suddenly such a big deal. To me, they aren't that fantastic. We all have our tastes, eh?
As a die hard Tool fan for 25 years i have to say their fans can be insufferable.
Tool fans act like they are still this misunderstood underground band that they need to explain and not one of the most mainstream bands of all time that knocked Taylor effing Swift out of the #1 spot when they released their last album.

My Dad died listening to Sleep Token. He nailed his head to the dining room table, ripped his ears off and stuffed the flaps into the holes to block out the horror, but the sheer naffness of their music stopped his ticker. His last words were “King Diamond…”

Megadeth has the highest meat-riding to quality of music ratio. Maybe that doesn't make them the winner of this bracket, but it truly is something to behold.
Shiet, maybe i'm out of touch on things social media, but Megadeth being in this conversation is so weird to me. Aside from their new guitar player Kiko who is the biggest Mustaine dick rider on the planet, Megadeth fans are mostly just ordinary thrash metal fans, and some of them even go as far as having a sense of humor about the vocals.

Sleep Token ONE HUNDRED PERCENT should have won this. Everyone praises them for being so "unique" and "original" and "groundbreaking", they're literally doing nothing new. They play the most generic Weeknd inspired R&B and then throw in royalty free TH-cam djent riffs.
I listened to a half dozen songs by sleep token, and I found them boring as hell.
i remember all i listened to was Tool. every day till the songs went numb on me....and then more lol. watching concerts, lyrical meaning videos, occult stuff, learning what little history we have of them.....then one day it fizzled out unbeknownst to me haha. now i'm in a "nu-metal bands i've somehow missed and have on repeat" phase rn.
As a psychologist I have seen it quite a few times; the vaunted fan who's salty their fav isn't socially relevant anymore and channels that resentment into uncontrollable D riding as a coping mechanism. I'm waiting for PTMRD to gain acceptance in the scientific literature. Post Traumatic Meat Riding Disorder is ravaging our online communities and they need our help!

I can kind of explain the hand tattoo stuff, I can only speak for the Navy side but a few years ago they changed the tattoo regs to allow full sleeves again, a smallish neck tattoo, and hand tattoos. I'm in San Diego which is a big military town and hand and neck tattoos have exploded here

So if I don't like your band I don't like your band but I'm glad they move you and speak to your soul. Metal Gatekeepers are some of the worst... I don't care about 15,000 subgenres of metal. Pigeonhole and cornering it into all these little boxes takes away from any enjoyment you can have with some fans
Megadeth has the meat rider fanbase because of their rivalry with Metallica. Rivalries always create loyal and tribal fanbases: you're Megadeth or Metallica, Pepsi or Coke, Nintendo or Sega.

As a metal fan I have not heard of 90% of these bands.
Not even kidding, at my first Tool concert some random drunk guy asks my friend and I out of the blue if its our first concert (as if its written all over our faces). We're like, "yeah." He replies, "BOY, YOU GUYS ARE IN FOR THE GREATEST NIGHT OF YOUR LIVES." I'm like, okay lol.
Also I think the Bring Me the Horizon meatriders are the guys who are like “you’re not a real fan unless you listened to them when they were deathcore!”

Thank you Finn for pushing me outside my metal bubble. I'm enjoying life lately outside the annoying metal community lore. And I mean real outside, touching grass and all that. This is no joke, there are so many metalheads needing this that its just sad. Hell, even my W girlfriend likes some Archspire songs, so I paid my dues to the community lol. Speaking of them, Archspire fanbase is great because the band is full of great and funny guys who dont take themselves seriously. Or at least thats the vibe I get from them.
The fact that Sleep Token was gone in round 2 means these guys have zero credibility anymore. I've personally received 10,000 word essays on why ST are the greatest band ever and I just "don't get it" when i've dared to say "ehh they're good musicians but it's not my thing I guess" on the latest Metal Hammer post about Sleep Token on fb

As a lover of European metal music and European culture, I have seen some people so stupidly obsessed with them, they are the European version of Koreaboos/weaboos. I always love appreciating music from all cultures but that stan culture is an absolute clown show.
I went through my "thrash big 4" phase in 2003 in highschool. I still only listen to Metallica from those 4, they were the biggest band then and now for a reason.

Im a really big Sleep Token Fan…. We can’t compete with Tool fans… I give a tool fan some Lore, they give me memes, Fibonacci Sequence, weird timings, Maynard, Danny Carey, novels….. I appreciate and respect Tool as a band, but their fans are pretty hard to talk to. Haha

Maybe it’s the area I live in? I’m a meat rider for Sleep Token, yet the majority of people I know either don’t care for them, flat out hate them, or to this day have not even heard of them. I can count on one hand how many people I know who love them.

I'm a big early Hatebreed fan (haven't heard anything after the covers album which was sweet), but Megadeth have one album that elevates themselves above them easily, and even above 25 other classic thrash/speed metal bands and that's Rust In Peace...why they didn't continue writing like on that album is why they have SO MANY mid albums before and after that one. Not a meat rider for sure, since I'll only listen to RIP, best thrash album of 1990 and the only amazing thing front to back they've done.

To me, if you're not into thrashing, you're not a metal fan. Polyphia, as they said, is just nerd-core for ppl who like scales and music theory. It's not really music that makes you bang your head against the wall in order to forget your childhood trauma.

I used to Meatride so hard for Tool... until their last album. They are great. And their last album is good. But it was like asking me about my grandma while I Meatrode. 10 years of what I considered great Maynard output since their previous album... and then that.
I am currently a big-time Megadeth Meatrider. I just don't get people who like thrash metal who don't like Megadeth. I get that Dave's voice is odd... but it just puts the hooks in deeper. Metallica is awesome; have way more iconic songs; I'm going to see them twice this weekend; but Megadeth just FEELS cooler to me in my soul. Can't really explain it. But other Megadeth fans usually just nod ponderingly, and throw up the horns.
As you can tell by my avatar/profile logo, I'm a huge 311 fan. Actually, I designed that logo, that they used for one of their summer tours. But! I would not consider myself a 311 Meatrider. I don't gatekeep or try to promote them. I totally get why some people are turned off by them. That's okay.

I remember one time i was talking to this dude about KSE and metalcore songs we like, and then he brought up Unearth. I wasn't really familiar with more than 1 or 2 songs, and that was enough to set this kid off for like a half an hour about how I should know them and influence. He basically tried to make it seem like I was a poser and tried to delegitimize everything I said about KSE because I didn't know every Unearth song, "like, you don't know anything about metacore if you don't listen to ...."
Also had this kid tell me I had a stupid opinion and don't know what i'm talking about because I like Mr.Bungle and don't like Death. The butthurt was so visible.

I knew a girl in high school who was a Megadeth meat rider. She got mad at me for not liking them. I graduated in 2012. To this day, her love for Megadeth atill baffles me. She may be the only Megadeth fan thats a girl to wver exist 😂
