I'm a school counselor and I use Wilma's story every year when I talk about goal setting. She is a true example of how to set goals, work towards them, and persevere.
Amen. And to think she had polio and had to wear braces as a child. She had more than a dozen biological sisters and brothers who took turns rubbing her legs. Familial Love not only cured her but gave her Wings!
Wilma Rudolph was a treasure. She was the first American woman to win 3 gold medals at any Olympics. Italians in Rome called her "the gazelle," for her beauty and gracefulness. And the fact that she overcame polio (and wore braces) makes her story even more inspiring. She had more than a dozen biological sisters and brothers who took turns massaging her legs! Familial love cured her and gave her feet WINGS! Goosebumps here!
We had just bought an old TV, and I remember watching Wilma run this race in the Olympics. I was stunned, I could not believe someone could move that fast. It wasn't live, but it was the next best thing. A moment never to forget. Never read her story for 50 more years passed. Incredible woman.
I truly enjoyed watching this video of the great lady herself....Wilma Rudolph! The things she had to endured in her lifetime, but yet she continued to press forward and became a remarkable athlete and a great role model in society.
MrYellowlabs Open the door for all races, created history for the United States of America, won medals for the United States of America, hated by many European Caucasian Americans for being black and making their country, the United States of America proud, Caucasians who came here on ships, who were immigrants.
I remember watching a movie about Wilma produced by Bud Ellison back in the 1970's. I was simply amazed and inspired to see this woman rise above the obstacles that would have been insurmountable for most people. Her story lead me to a life long love for track and field and inspired me to always follow my dreams. I wish someone would up load more videos of this amazing athlete.
So here we are in 2015 and I am 47 years old. Wilma ran these Olympics some 8 years before I was ever born, and it goes without saying that I grew up in a time without internet media on demand, smart phones or 24-Hour cable news. Yet, the reason I'm here on this video at all is because in a conversation a few minutes ago about the "Death of American Pride" I mentioned true American Heroes, and just to name a few I rattled off three names...Neal Armstrong, Wilma Rudolph and Christa McAuliffe. I was in shock that my 40 year old partner had no clue who Wilma Rudolph was. How can you be an American and not know who Wilma Rudolph was? RIP Wilma Rudoph...may your memory live on forever!
I can only support that. How can an American not know that? Perhaps because she was a colored woman? I was 11 when she walked all over the place in Rome.
I read a book about Wilma and she was VERY fast, you can also tell from the video too. But sadly Wilma died because of cancer. Even though some of us never knew her, we should still always remember her until the day we past away. She was also very poor at the time so, her people in her town collected money to help Wilma get over to Rome so she could run and show everybody because she was born with something called polio. And because of that, her doctor said that Wilma could not walk but Wilmas mother did not belive that it was true so, Wilma started working hard because she believed that her mother was right. Wilma could finally walk but she could not run, so she worked harder. Wilma was born in 1960 and that's when she had polio. (Note) This information is from a book I read at school. Today and then on, I will remember her ❤
Just to emphasise how fast this was, both the 19 year old silver medalist Dorothy Hyman [who also got the bronze in the 200m] and bronze medalist Giuseppina Leone both posted times that would have beaten 1964 gold medalist, Wyomia Tyus. Leone was coming to the end of her career at the 60 games so didn't take part in '64 while Hyman was the favourite to win gold until suffering injury a few weeks before the games.
Thank you for such an inspiring video. Wilma Rudolph was the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in Olympic competition. It would be nice if we could see the other event in which she received one. Was it for the relay? Anybody know where we can see that race?
I have said it on many occasion. Wilma Rudolph IS/WAS the greatest Track athlete the USA have produce. Not Flojo, Gail Devers, Carl Lewis, Maurice Greene nor any of the drug induced athletes the USA has over the years. She is in a league and class of her own. You are to me Wilma Rudolph The Quintessential Athlete" of the 20th Century.
Would be even more epic if in a movie adaptation, she had flash backs of her struggles, and and knows of what it means to be human and crying out a scream of effort as her rival is racing against her and she beats her by 0.01 seconds!
I read her story in book after I thought nothing is immposiible she is Sicky and get pnemonia and polio IAM so wonderful she is not powerless she is very strong
Wilma Rudolph is my hero!! I believe I will be an Olympic star like her cuz I run SUPER fast...faster then all the boys in my school! And their VERY fast!!! 😁😁😁
If you think only one athlete from **any** country can earn your respect, let alone from a country as large as the USA, then you are truly a closed-minded idiot. Team USA sent 292 athletes to Rome. I assume you invited the other 291 over for dinner, and concluded they are all jerks?
Read the book 'Rome 1960'....by David Maraniss....just brilliant....like Wilma Rudolph and all the other athletes.....Wilma was a beautiful Gazelle.....gone too soon!
One of her quotes is " I don't know how I run so fast I just run" She is AWESOME!!!!!!!

Amen
She actually also was a Christian and had faith in God! He healed her with her loving family
@@HK-cp8tm What was the need to insert "Christian" here? I hope you'll look at World above Religion.

The epitome of grit, perseverance and undaunted courage in the face of insurmountable odds. She was and will remain "The Black Pearl"
We can get so much joy from watching these incredibly blessed athletes !
It was Wilma who "opened the door" for.....Evelyn, Gail, FloJo, Jackie, Marion, etc.

believe in you not anyone else....that's what she did.
A long-legged beauty was Ms. Wilma Rudolph. Love the lack of fanfare and how she just goes out there and does it.

The "ONLY" athlete from the USA that this person truly respect . You are an Iconic woman Wilma Rudolph.

It wasn’t even a fair fight. Wilma is a beautiful story!

What is the music to this? I love it👌
Just awesome just true
Wilma rudolph🥰
She won the 200 metres from lane 1. That's the worst possible lane. The tight bend forces most runners to decelerate.
She is so fast
Read the book 'Rome 1960'....by David Maraniss....just brilliant....like Wilma Rudolph and all the other athletes.....Wilma was a beautiful Gazelle.....gone too soon!
Hats off🎉🎉🎉
Great memories of Wilma and Earl Young. I was 10 yrs old. Is she still alive???
her mother is the main person for her success
She made that look so easy.... She wasn't in a race against the others.... She was even racing against herself...
19 people accidentally hit the dislike button, there's still time to change it guys/gal.
My dads grandma knew her! I guess they met in heaven...😭
