Walking around a High School in 1986

  • Hanging around the Concord High School hallways and outside the facility in small tiny New Hampshire.
    In less than 2 weeks one of the teachers here, Christa McAuliffe is about to leave earth aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger.
    That day of course would shake the nation to it's core and rattle the world following a massive disaster of epic portions.
    For now, everyone is happy as it should have been.
    This short video last around 3 minutes.

      Haven't been in highscool for a couple years but yes, it's very chaotic now. But I'll hazard a guess and assume the kids we see here were on their best behavior for the cameras. Nowadays, cameras inspire a chaotic and disorderly conduct.

    Mom would’ve been 13 and dad 16 in 1986. Its crazy to think that like my parents, all of the teens in this vid are in their 50’s now. Still, I’m sure the 80’s was a fun time, far better then 2023 I’m sure.

    Looks different to high schools in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧. I was in high school from 1985 to 1991. In 1986 I would’ve been in the 1st year (what is now known as Year 7 in the UK). One difference I can see is nobody is wearing a school uniform. We had to wear them until the 5th year(now year 11) Our high school had a 6th form, not all high schools have this. Basically a bit like college. Ours had about 900 pupils and was situated in quite a large village. Also carpeted corridors....we never had them. 😄

    Short but interesting. I just had a feeling that it was a high school in New England, and it turns out to be a high school in a city with which I am very familiar. I wouldn’t call it a “very small high school,” though. It’s the only high school in Concord, the capital city with about 45,000 residents, and in recent years has had 1,500-2,000 students. Back in the mid-‘80s, although the city population was only in the 30,000-35,000 range, there were just many more school age residents, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the school population was not that different from today. (Edit: an article about the Challenger disaster mentioned there were 1,200 students. The halls certainly look quite empty in this video, but 1,200 is not a very small high school.)

    • @Anonymoi
      @Anonymoi 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      An interesting fact I happened upon when looking for the size of the school - in early December 1985, a 16 year old recent Concord High drop-out entered the school with a gun shortly after the start of classes and took two students hostage. He ended up being killed in a brief gun fight with police. This video was shot not that long after that.

My teenage years were rough, but I was such a fox (yes, I really was). I played 1st violin in orchestra, 1st baseman on varsity softball team, National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. I did well despite all the crap I took from my fellow classmates.

This crowd was just chill. Some dont look the most comfortable on camera so they either didn't look at it or just hurried past quickly. No fuss or yelling needed. I can imagine others we dont see being silly on camera and loving it.

Because the teens today will either make their older years easy or very hard!! Or just kill their futures all together. So if you are a teen, Take your education very seriously. Learn ALL that you can. If you get a chance to goto college, GO!! Don't let no education opportunity pass you by.

      We knew how to treat people. Those who came later brought that on themselves by being social weird to their peers.

    LOVE your videos. But it's just weird to lead off your caption with "and a very small High School at that" when google could tell you it's not a very small school in about two seconds flat, or how you call New Hampshire "small tiny"..... I get your point, but you're kinda stretching the truth there a little teeny tiny very small bit too much ;)
