Rarely do we hear Michelangeli follow emotions inside of the music, but in the Chopin Scherzo, he does. Not only here, but this seems to be noticed in Scherzo 1 and 2 in later performances (not frequently performed) -- they are dramatic, personal interpretations. Thank you for posting and sharing this great document of this miraculous artist.

I agree. Personally my fav Chopin's piece is the 2nd Scherzo and when I heard the 80s or 1990 (if I'm not wrong)... no comment.

Incredible recital, even if the recording is a little patchy at the beginning of the Debussy Preludes. That last prelude was particularly striking--he makes the piece sound easy, even as the listener can appreciate the intense difficulty of playing all those fast notes. What an incredible pianist!

Many thanks for this amazing document ! Strangely The 2 chords of the beginning of the Chopin Scherzo are missing. ABM had performed this recital 2 times in Bordeaux - this one is the first - and it was for the 2de time ( a charity concert) he had hisaortic aneurysm in the Debussy 2de Book...

+Vincent Larderet I am very sorry to be so slow in responding. I'm not a great correspondent, but I am definitely improving. Yes, those two sustained chords at the start of the Scherzo are missing, and I don't have any idea where they went. They are not on the tape I possess. A mystery of omission. I will be putting up the 2nd Bordeaux recital, which is in better sound. As he is playing I hear no indication of the catastrophic event to come. I hear no sound other than music, then silence, then sympathetic and bewildered audience. Since I am hard of hearing I will have my other half double check for me that I am not oblivious to other sounds there, but it too falls under the category of amazing document. I am so very glad that this TH-cam medium allows me to share these treasures, and that they reach to new ears and find new homes all over the world, and with luck will continue to do so long after I'm gone. I love to share. Thank you for sharing with me.

    TRAURIG, wenig später geschah es!
Der Maestro war danach nicht mehr derselbe.

+berlinzerberus At the moment I am unable to get the translator to work, but the 2nd Bordeaux recital, on the 17th, has him playing magnificently, until he stops. I'll keep working on the translator, or will get help from my other half when he wakes.

+berlinzerberus We have yet one more document from immediately before it happened. To my senses he was without impediment quite literally up to that moment. I will be putting up Bordeaux Recital 2, 17 October 1988, all there was of it. It is a tremendously moving document, a testament to his courage and dedication to truth in sound.
