    I buy stocks for different reasons. Some to hold onto forever. Others for a quick profit. Others for options tradin. Mostly though, I look for dividend income because that's my retirement goal paired with my rental properties.

    Hi Joseph thanks for the consistently great content. I have a question. I use your method of figuring out 5 year performance of dividend stocks using yahoo finance statistics and adjusted returns. As you have taught. Question: Does the adjusted close factor in if you had those dividends being reinvested via DRIP? if if it doesn't then your returns would be higher due to compounding... is this correct? Thanks again for all you do.

    Joseph, are you selling your tech holdings as they decline to buy less volatile stocks or are you keeping your tech and investing new money in the less volatile stocks? Are you buying more tech as it goes down? Thank you again for your extremely valuable content and guidance!

    • @josephhogue
      @josephhogue  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question. I'm pretty well underinvested in tech so the stocks I do own are long-term holds. Still holding about 20-25% in cash along with 20% in other non-stock assets waiting for time to start putting it back to work in the market.

      @@josephhogue I am definitely too heavily weighted in tech. I am trying to strategically move out of tech without earnings. I loved this video because it gives me a good action plan where to reposition the proceeds. Bought IBM today and looking for a financial stock with strong dividends. Kicking myself for liquidating my interest in Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia. Will be buying AT&T….while holding my nose. Again, thank you!

    Great educational video Joe, I had a question, you mention all of these stocks with growth and dividend yield, wouldn't it be better to invest in an etf like voo ? Since it has most if not all of these stocks ?
    Do we still get the dividends from those companies trough the etf?

    • @burkles4456
      @burkles4456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, although the total yield will be, generally, lower due to average.

    • @richardtotty5113
      @richardtotty5113 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all stocks in the VOO will perform as well as the ones which are hand picked by a pro CFA, so hence why the overall yield in VOO (or in any index tracker) will be lower. The Market average dividend return is historically 1.3% in the USA for the All
      Markets average; which is pitifully low vs inflation, CPI, etc. So one way to improve on that is to go the route Joseph is suggesting in his video above and look for companies that can afford to pay out higher dividends because they are strong companies that know how to manage their balance sheets to maximum benefit of their shareholders.

    Great video, thank you for sharing.. 2022 is going to be an interesting year and another one for the books for the longer-term dividend investor investing into high quality stocks... Upcoming volatility too with the economic data coming out - employment report on Friday and inflationary update on Monday, EXPECT turbulence, but also opportunity to BUY ... FYI it is already happening as we can see stocks are wavering...

      I have been buying strong dividend stocks and buying when they dip and selling when they peak, usually just before ex-dividend date.
      If they don't recover, I just hold and collect the dividends as long as there isn't bad news. If bad news comes out, I cut bait and sell.
      I typically sell when my gain is at least 9 months of dividends. I have been in and out of some of these stocks 6-8 times a year.

    Dear Joseph, Thank you for such informative videos for us little guys. Do you recommend on these dividend stocks to reinvest the dividends back into the shares (DRIP) or to take the cash dividends?

    • @josephhogue
      @josephhogue  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure thing Pat. Always glad to help. If you can, would definitely reinvest to start making money on your dividends. Don't forget to hold them in a retirement account so you don't pay taxes on them each year

      How do you go about holding individual stocks into a retirement account so I don't pay taxes on them each year? First time investor. Thanks!

    • @richardtotty5113
      @richardtotty5113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DRIP is often disproportionately costly in terms of commission you have to pay on a percentage term vs taking the dividend as cash, combining dividends from your overall portfolio each month or each quarter and then reinvesting in one business, with one commission to pay on that one reinvestment.
      If you held 48 stocks and you had to pay $1 on each of them, once each quarter, that’s 48x4x1 = 192 dollars in commission alone each year.
      If you instead take the dividends from the 48 stocks, aggregate the each month, then buy one stock each month, you maybe have, say if it cost $5 per investment, it then costs you 12x5 = $60 per year. So a net saving in commission costs of $132 per annum.
      If you aggregate dividends to every quarter, then reinvest in only one new company each quarter, the cost to reinvest your dividends is then only 4x5 = 20 dollars per annum, saving you $172 dollars vs DRIP.

    ATT has struggled. They bought dishnetwork, then quickly sold it for a loss, then they bought Warner media, and quickly reversed themselves and announced they re splitting the company up into separate units. No one know what that will look like. The div yield is high because the share price is down. Given management 's large missteps and reversals I have little confidence in their future until they prove themselves.

    I believe Tech is now considered 'Out of Favor' now that the fed is tapering down & most likely will raise interest rates this year. The investing paradigm has shifted and many new investors{~20years to present} are in for a learning experience throughout this year and beyond. AGREE that dividend growth stocks is where we should shift our investment strategy. I've actually started this transition beginning in October. My portfolio is now at ~84% in dividend growth stocks. Sector breakdown: ~41% in financials, ~ 11% in Energy, ~10% in Utilities, ~9% in Tech., ~7% in REITS, balance in Communications/Basic Materials/Industrials. {PS: Had a very positive first week in January}.

      Look at stocks with high Credit scores for long term stability in stocks. Microsoft and Johnson & Johnson are AAA grade, which is the best. Then look at AA+, AA-, Etc

    I was wondering what your thoughts were on IEP. It has a crazy high PE ratio and have been hesitant to pull the trigger so far. I too have been shifting to dividend stocks ahead of any further volatility or crashes/bear market.

      Held up well against overall market. Dividend stocks usually outperform when the market falls though there's still some pain. Reinvest the dividends and you'll do well.

    Retired with a 7figure portfolio , receiving about $167k in dividends….I for one know that investing in quality dividend paying companies is a relatively easy strategy to create generational wealth

    • @christopherlloyd2328
      @christopherlloyd2328 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I’ll say, the best strategy is to start buying in slowly and then gradually increase the pace of buying as the prices continue to dwindle. Selling off everything makes no sense at all but short term investors and speculators can sell off if they have made profits in their initial investments and still benefit from volatility of the markets. I think now is the best time to buy financially stable dividend stocks

    • @Mhousley
      @Mhousley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree. As long as the company is solid and well managed, never sell it.
      Speculative stocks, that don’t have much profits just promises , what do you expect to happen when the market crashes. It’s a game you learn to play or stay poor for life

      How do you do it ?
      What are your investments choices, I could use some help over here too. My stock picks have been depressingly bad to be honest, currently I’m in need of a good investments plan, I have a lump sum of $77,000+ in a savings account yielding next to nothing. Have you got any ideas that could possibly be of benefit to me, I’m keen on advancing my portfolio a little further

      Actually there’s no particular sector I focus on , I have my funds well diversified using signals from my IA , Noud Mikan. He’s a Belgian pro investor, well regulated and licensed by the FCA to trade securities…..he’s quite known on CNBC and to be honest it’s been a huge relief, good earnings and little to no engagement at all on my part.

    Which do you prefer...dividend stocks or growth investing? and why?

    • @jfizzle169
      @jfizzle169 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Personally I prefer both, but with a bigger leaning towards dividends. I have dividends on about 90% of my portfolio, with just 10% on solid growth. I am leaning heavily that way because of the possible “lost decade” and because I’m in the accumulation phase and want to live off dividends as soon as possible.

      Mostly dividends for me, started buying dividend stocks in 1989. Companies with more stable earnings and dividends are naturally crash-resistant and I like the constant flow of cash coming in to allow more investing without selling shares.

      I have 90% of my portfolio in mutual funds: 85/15 split stock/ bonds. My stocks are the remainder. Since the funds are managed for growth, my stocks are for me to play. That said I still angle the individual stocks for dividends. T, abr, amgn, pru, mrk, jpm, bmy, psec, kr, cost, bac. Old standards.

    Well I’d rather go with a high-paying ETF’s that doesn’t lose value over time. Invest it and forget it strategy and doesn’t matter if it pays monthly or quarterly as long as it’s high-quality payer. I like QYLD, SCHD, NUSI, RYLD, XYLD, DIVO

      Nothing is trouble or worry free.
      That's why people get paid at a job and entrepreneurs and investors are hopefully rewarded with profits, gains, or dividends.
