- The city of Ayutthaya was the capital of a mighty empire that once controlled large parts of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. A cosmopolitan centre of over a million residents, it was one of the wealthiest cities in the eastern hemisphere, and even compared to Paris.
Host Peter Lee travels through Thailand to explore the secrets of how this empire grew to be powerful. From ancient crypts that depict its growth as a trading nation, to elephants and a unique martial art used in battles to defend the kingdom, Peter explores how Ayutthaya grew into a prosperous trading hub, that attracted merchants from all over the world from Japan in the east to Great Britain in the west. So much so that foreign influences of Ayutthaya’s golden age still lingers in Thailand’s culinary traditions.

When he said ‘it was created in Ayutthaya’s image’ ... my heart shed a tear, because as a Bangkok native I was raised to remember how each part of Rattanakosin Island (old Bangkok) was a reminder in miniature of the glory of Ayutthaya. Every neighborhood in old Bangkok had its exact place in Ayutthaya, so the survivors of the sack of Ayutthaya would never forget the beauty of their former home...and the original temples and palaces of Bangkok were built from those same bricks in Ayutthaya transported specifically so that Ayutthaya lives on in Bangkok.

After the country unite by the current monarch 2 century ago, We stay neutral from colonization with England from the west and French from the east, We help the allies to win WW1, We survived the axis power in WW2. We survive because we proud of what our ancestor were made. Plus some sly politics of our people that taking different sides. No external influence would break us. (Because we always break ourself from the inside before they do, It's true in Ayutthaya era, And it's being true right now lol)

I have a huge fascination with Thailand. When I was a child growing up in the Philippines, I didn't know much about the country. But I have those dreams about a place where there were so many temples, colourful food/delicacies, and beautiful culture. Years later I have almost forgotten about it.
When I was in 5th grade we had a school program to celebrate the United Nations Day. Our teacher told me to represent Thailand, I have to make a speech and presentation wearing a traditional Thai costume. So, I have to make a research. While reading books and seeing photos of Thailand. I thought it was really familiar. I asked my parents if we have traveled to Thailand as a child. My mom said no, she hadn't traveled to another country at that time. Suddenly, I remembered seeing them in my dreams when I was much younger. As a grown-up, before moving to Canada, I went to Dubai to work for a little over 2 years. And guess what? I worked in an internationally known hotel chain owned by the Thai Royal Family and of course, there were so many Thais employed at the hotel in different departments but most of them were chefs. Because of the language barrier, they tend to hang out among themselves but one day, one of the Thais approached me. Apparently, he wanted us to be friends. He told me that I look like Thai from the Chang Mai region. I thought that was really awesome because I was interested I just didn't know how to approach them. He invited me to their place for dinner. I remember there were about 6 of them sitting on the floor surrounding the food. That was my first experience with authentic Thai food and culture. Eventually, I became friends with everyone and I learned so much about their culture. My admiration for the Thai culture just grown on me. Several months later I visited Thailand and it was amazing. It's was like walking to a place you are familiar with. Fast forward, 11 years later I have traveled to many beautiful countries but Thailand is still my favourite. I was planning to visit again this year but due to the pandemic, all travel plans got canceled. Hopefully, I could still travel this year if it is already safe to travel. If not, early next year to reconnect with the culture and see some friends I am still in touch with today. Sawasdee Khap Thailand! Khub Khun Kap!
You know why so many Japanese people learning Thai language.. Because 50% of them had their children lifetimes in Thailand before going back to Japan. And they had their dreams to go back to Thailand again when they're ready & spend the end of lifes there forever 😁

Actually, quite some historians (such as by Chris Baker and Pasut Phongpaichit) have argued that Ayutthaya's peak of prosperity continued into the 18th century (with the Chinese trade, with the European impact, and their subsequent departure, being quite negligible).

Hope you like this series. It was broadcasted firstly in 2018 but it still the proper one to see as well as the introduction of Thai series until now.

I watched the drama Love Destiny and it makes me want to try wearing Thailand traditional clothes and visit the country while learning about the cultures.

@@Jumpoable Bali hasnt something to represent its beauty and story like Ayuthdhaya has Love destiny to represent it. So the tourists dont have anything to connect with Baliness costume and the place. In my country we call your behavior that “Phak Ran” . The meaning of it is when someone open the shop to sell something and it goes very well for the business. The shops next door who sell similar thing come to tell the costumers of the first to come to shop at their shops too……it’s not mannered and it isnt thing you shouldn’t have done with neighbors. Ok?

I Love Thailand. Ayuthaya named after Ayodhya, the Capital of Bhagwan Ram. Thailand was of Hindu Dharma and the King's name has suffix of Rama, reflects it. The samudramandhana well crafted at Bangkok Airport is there for everyone to see. After Buddhism spread around from India, one of its tradition shown influence on Thai people.

It didn't spread from India because those region was apart of ancient Hindu bloodline.
We have a masked dance drama (Khon) to depict the Ramayana as well. We call it Rammakien ( Ramayana version Thai). Yogyakatar in Indonesia also have India connection as well. Ayodhaya , Ayuthdhaya and Yogyakarta are the three city twin in term of Ramayana epic.
I come from Vietnam a neighboring country with Thailand. I can partly understand the era of King Narai the Great, the happenings in the imperial court, the important events of Ayutthaya through the Thai TV series "Love Destiny". I feel very cherished this place because This place has a rich history and huge architectural works. If I have the opportunity to visit, Ayutthaya is the first place I want to visit when I come to Thailand.

I am a North East Indian and my state Assam was also once ruled by Thai decendants centuries back. We have similar architectural buildings in those places where they established their kingdom. And few tribes of our state still practices Thai customs and traditions.

Ahom in Assam and Tai in South China are the older Tai/Laos cilvilizations, judge by the similarity of speaking language Thai ancestor maybe migrated from either of 2 places or both. Personally I think Ahom culture look more similar to Shan state ( a Tai people state in Myanmar) or maybe Tai people in Thailand evolves differently since the country located between China and India also being port trading with many nationality while Ahom and South China Tai got heavy influence by one particular nation.

My husband occupation, IBM brought us to Bangkok, Thailand in 2003 and lived there for almost 3 years. My husband's friend took me a trip to Ayutthaya and so glad she did. I can relate the to Peter's documentary about this wonderful city. It does resembled Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Your documentary Peter of Ayutthaya is perfect, that I watched it twice. Ayutthaya was named after the Indian city of Ayodhya which is believed to be the birthplace of the God Rama. Those traditional outfits look very similar to the Kanchipuram sarees in India. Altho, they never went out of style here
In fact, its real name is Ayothaya Sriramthepnakhon, a copy of the name of a city in India.Thai people practice Hinduism before Buddhism.

Ayutthaya sounds like Ayodhya ancient city of India where epic of Ramayan had writen at first. I can see so much similarities either both side.
You do not surprise Countries in Southeast Asia are influenced by Indian culture. Cities in Southeast Asia named as cities in India, such as ayutthaya from Ayodhya, derived from the names of the cities of Rama, Cambodia and Srivijaya mimic the names of cities in India.We are indebted to the culture of India.
The city name was influenced from Ramayana.

in the Ayutthaya era, they believed that the King was the Lord Rama in the Human form so that's why they bring the name of Ayodhya to use as the Capital city name "Ayutthaya"

@@mrj475 Hindu and Mahayan Buddhism influence came to this region since 7th century because Chola dynasty trade with Mon kingdom (ancient empire in this region) but around 12th century Sukothai kingdom (former Thai capital) receive Theravada Buddhism from Sri-Lanka.
So you can find art and architecture from this era to modern day focus on concept of Theravada Buddhism but still have many mixture of Hinduism.

My grand father both sides are from China. My paternal grand ma is Chinese born in Thailand. My maternal grandma is Thai. I’m Thai of course.

Here in india, my grandma used to make fire pot using the same technique of using mud and rice husk. It is interesting to know that this technique was practiced long time ago.

'Krabi Krabong' - Incredible ! This same fighting form is in the Indian state of Kerala with *same* fighting tools known as 'Kalaripayattu'. Battles and feuds would be settled with this deadly now art form in yester years!! It's found only in Kerala in India.
Manipuri martial art Thang Ta is also similar to this.
I really want to go to that part of India to see real fighting techniques. Muay thai is my favorite sport.

In the situation of out numbered and may be defeated, King Naresuan said to prince Mingyi Swa "Instead of just watch our solder killing each other under the shade, We could avoid the unnecessary death if we just fight one on one."
This means many things. Both of the king and the prince were value their own solder's life as worth to be save even though that means to risk their own life. And also means they're both confident in their own battling skills. They're also prideful. And there're back story as King Naresuan born as Ayutthaya prince was once captured by Burma when Ayutthaya was defeat the first time, The Burmese king Nanda Bayin raise the prince as one of his own child. So king Naresuan and Prince Mingyi Swa are like brothers who know each other so well. Both of them known to be love to challenge or compete each other since childhood. It's King Nanda Bayin himself who assign prince Naresuan back to Ayutthaya to rule the area under Burmise kingdom. Not knowing that prince Naresuan would liberate Ayutthaya back to it's own state like it was 15 years ago, Which make him become a king. Myanmar might see this action as rebelling instead of liberation. But every one agree that both king Naresuan and prince Mingyi Swa were legendary brave man who fought one on one over an elephant for the last time of the history, And end the battle, safe their men's life from unnecessary death. (That might also end up as a defeat for Ayutthaya)

Btw at 16:47 the word "musth" is actually pronounced "mun" in Thai, the full word is tok-mun, tok means fall and mun I guess it's derived from nam-mun (meaning "oil"), so the whole meaning of tok-mun is oil falling as it's described in the video.

i used to visit auutthaya back in 2014 and its amazing to see a city in the middle of river streams
i can't imagine if have time machine and travel back to the past........wonderfull.
