This guy, Aaron Dugan, is neither stoned or clueless about his guitar. He is very shy and hates talking about himself. He designed the guitar himself and just wanted to let the interviewer take the lead on the description so he wouldn't have to sound like a self important jerk. All you have to do is listen to the genius and beauty of his playing and know he's neither clueless about his instrument or baked... What you are witnessing is a very humble, kind, shy and talented person under the spotlight of an interview.
Silverbrama ... I grew up 3 houses from Aaron,Great player,we played together a number of times around 96,97.He helped me re dedicate myself to guitar playing,I'll always remember those times, with a smile.
haha this is a classic example of a musical prodigy for an instrument. notice that he is very expressive with his melodies. they come alive, you can not only hear but feel them. the improvisation comes so easy to this dude. but yet he has trouble explaining his expression in words and easy lays them out through playing. this guy is truely gifted.
It's mainly triadic chromaticism mixed with pentatonics, hemiolas, and chaos. also, i use the mixolydian b2 b6 scale often and throw in the major 7th for gravity during this kind of solo. when the key i'm soloing in does not change, i often employ the kitchen sink strategy.
Perhaps what makes Aaron Dugan such a unique player is his rock driven licks infused with his reggae inspired rhythm. Reggae is not limited to bearded, dread headed rastamen. Give this guy the respect he deserves!
it's so interesting that everybody thinks i'm high in this clip. i remember being groggy because that piece was filmed in the morning. not at all high, though.
To clarify the guitar make and model for those wondering, he says it's a Washburn Damen Idol. It's the only double cutaway from the Idol series. And as Aaron states, it has several custom shop modifications.
Thanks a million. Believe it or not I've just joined a reggae band, I generally don't even listen to reggae but the drummer is a good friend and I'm really getting into it. Starting to hear what else can be done on the guitar, other than the "1 chop 3 chop", is a godsend so thanks for this video!
my jaw just dislocated.... went to hospital holding my laptop with the video still playing....doctor asked wat happened....he saw the video and got his jaw dislocated too \m/ your like the jesus of ska man Nice
I watched this a year or two ago On Demand at my friends house. I was playing bass and just scewing around on guitar. Aaron Dugan has really affected my style. I always love to use regge rhythms and I love the unorthadoxy in his crazy solos. I look at this differently now that I seriously play guitar. Hes fucking awesome. His style has no choice but to rub off on me.
this guy is great. i'm just starting to get more in more into reggae but i have no clue where to start, not too many people around me listen. anyone have any suggestions on similar reggae guitarists that i can check out?
of course you can !! it just won't have that natural "treble" of stratocasters and telecasters, but then you just need to put your treble up and turn on your wah ( for trebly styles I recommend the Vox wah) and there you go !!
He's aaron dugan, matisyahu's guitar player.. and this guitar is a washburn custom artist guitar. He says, at washburn's official webpage: "People come up to me and ask me what kind of guitar it is. I tell them it's a Washburn and they're very surprised because most people think of Washburn as a heavy metal guitar company. They first comment on the beautiful tone and how good it looks, then I tell them what kind of guitar it is..."."
the reason he looks like the guitarist from matisyahu is because he is...it says that like 5 times how could you possibly miss it? but my god i am truly jealous of his guitar skills though.
What is a good reggae setting. I have my Palomino V32 dialed in at treble 8, mid 0, bass 5, reverb 3 and an Ibanez DE7 delay/echo on it. It sounds good, but once i get passed 2 on volume it sounds bad...is it cuz I'm in a small room? or is there a better setting?
Anyone have a good reggae setting for my amp? I play an Epiphone Dot plugged into palomino V32, with a digitech reverb pedal, and a crybaby wah. As of now i usually have it set to clean channel, treble 8, bass 6, reverb 3, and i used to set mid to 0, but now i have it at 6. any help? thanks. anyone got a better setting?
what kind of wah pedal do u use? its definitely not manual cuz u don't even move your foot. sounds dynamic and with delay and distortion. am i right? just need some help.
I think that reggae guitar is all about understanding that there are no "reggae chords." Bone up on your major, minor, and 7th chords. Play your "skank" strum on the last 4 strings... its really fun guys... I think everyone can benefit from being inn reggae band
wow...keyboard reggae style on guitar...thanks...i'll use it....nice! I like the bigsby but changing strings takes almost 2wice the time as a non bigsby...not sure how you spell it..
When I watched this a few years ago it inspired me to learn reggae/dub guitar. Because of this video i fell in love with an entire genre.
His guitar sound is specific, it sounds really nice, and the reggae rhythm is just perfect.... love his playing.

nothing wrong with being a little bit stoney. helps my creativity but i agree with you
On point!

I already knew Aaron was good but this takes the piss. He's got an absolute understanding of his instrument.

good vibes! whoever didnt like this has no idea how awesome this is.
Makes me wonder there is just such incredible talent out there .. sheer genius on the instrument!! Bravo!!
it's so interesting that everybody thinks i'm high in this clip. i remember being groggy because that piece was filmed in the morning. not at all high, though.

I especially like the first bit where he's doing the chucks and getting the bubble as well, which would usually be played by a keyboard.
one of the best guitar players still touring. period.
This guy so good at roots!
Yeah that sound does kick ass! I can't believe I used to play reagae with no effects.
His band Matisyahu is awesome. A lot of his riffs are from the songs. Check out king without a crown or youth. good stuff

Reverb, either Flanger or Phase Shifter or maybe even both, and a Wah effect from the sound of it.

is he messing with a wah pedal during play..or is the pedal just down the whole time?
think he has a phaser on it?
delay and wah-wah pedal, tools that go great with reggae music.
he plays so great, how do you get that bouble like sound?
It sounds like every note rises out of the guitar in a big bouble. Love it :D
Loving Matisyahu !!!
What pedal used to that effect in the guitar? please respond
@matumbina99 playing stoned is the way to really feel the reggae beat.
fasooooo!
no es suficiente
