      @@brokefisherman4557 Howdy, partner. Old comment, but I figured I’d try to help out in case you were still interested in the Saddle Mountain Skinner. It’s a solid piece, especially for skinning and food preparation, but the the reason I wouldn’t recommend it for “survival” would be because of the handle. It’s a thin boy. Good for skinning grips and such, but isn’t all that comfortable for extended carving and stuff. There’s a sort of jimping on the entire spine of the handle that makes it even more uncomfortable for hammer grip cuts. I honestly can’t recommend it unless you’re looking for a pure hunting knife. On top of all that, the new models are pushing $200, maybe even more nowadays, and there’s just a lot of better knives for “survival” and just general outdoor tasks in that price range. I was lucky enough to catch one of the old models on discontinued sale for $90. Another reason may be the thickness of the blade itself. I don’t know how you treat your knives, but if you’re really hard on them, I think it’ll be too thin for your liking.

    Awesome picks! My gripe is with ESEE. I own a 5 and an Isula II. For the Ant, I don't care that the sheath is plastic. On the 5, the sheath is Kydex, and it's awesome! It used to be that way for the 4, 5, 6 and Junglas. Now only the 5 and the Junglas have the Kydex sheath. That sucks. They're not the most expensive knives, but they're not cheap either. ESEE should have upped their price by $5 and kept the Kydex. (Cause $5 is probably their finished cost for Kydex). Juss sayin'............Merry Christmas to you and your family!! Cheers

      I got tired of 1095 steel. it works as any steel does but it dulls even with the humidity that is in the air. Nowdays, with a small ceramic rod, you can keep sharp any steel in the field. At least a good 52100 or 80CRV2, holds better edge and are both tougher and cut smoother!

    • @alanmeyers3957
      @alanmeyers3957 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greekveteran2715 a lot of that depends on edge geometry as well, however I myself prefer 01.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alanmeyers3957 Yes of course, but at 56--57 where most of the 1095 is, no matter what the geometry, it dulls really fast for a working blade. Now if I had it on a knife I would use for a cut, once in a while, then it would be just fine! I have got bored using that steel. O1 is noticably better! Also all my knives that are made of it, the steal eats up really fast, because it's easy to sharpen,the blade don't last much, before it changes it's shape a lot. Steels that are a bit higher, are great. 80CRV2, 52100,3V, even stainless CPM154, M390, all hold their sharpness longer and I never had problem sharpening them as some people say. Any steel either on stones or with a small ceramic rod, comes back sharp, with some strokes.

    • @alanmeyers3957
      @alanmeyers3957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@greekveteran2715 yes, I like 3v as well, and I too am able to sharpen it well.

    • @firekrakcer
      @firekrakcer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@greekveteran2715 not all 1095 steel is equal. For example it would be interesting to put that kabar harpoon up against the ESEE 6 and do some edge testing. Heat treat on any carbon steal is a big factor. If the heat treat is too high the hardness will be there but it will be brittle too. I like ESEE 1095 because I feel comfortable sharpening it in the field, its tuff and so long as I dont lose it they will replace it no questions asked if some how I find a way to break it. If I can get practice field sharpening with say 3v or D2 I may change my mind. Not sure about D2 tho, I dont want steel that may chip when my families life may depend on being able to use the tool.

      ColdSteel definitely gave alot of knife for the money. I mean the Code-4 was what $80 for XHP !!! then more recently S35VN.. the American Lawman for $100. the SRK for $43 in SK-5 and $170 for 0.20" blade Stock in 3V .... I mean.... idk if they are my absolute favorite, but they are most definitely a top 3-5 company. Too me they were a simpler, much tougher Spyderco. they will be missed incredibly

    Hmmm That’s strange, how can you call condors 1075 knife steel to soft at .70 to .80 carbon and bucks 5160 knife has less carbon in it 56 to .64 that’s a lot where carbon in a steel is concerned so it looks like you are contradicting your self ? Just seems strange to me 🤔. Never mind.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a lot to to do with the Rockwell and heat treat too. I have reviewed a few condors that role and dull in 10-15 min of work with their 1075. The buck knives that have 5160 take days to dull on me.

    • @Biketunerfy
      @Biketunerfy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gideonstactical buck are good with there heat treatments especially when they use Bos. Not sure about condor but I’ve got a few of them in 1075 and they are spot on. I think it would be cool to see the Rockwell between them so if I ever get a 5160 buck knife I’ll Rockwell test them both, but still I’d choose 1075 over 5160 any day unless your after toughness which is where 5160 would be the better choice.

  • @dimi7055
    @dimi7055 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The buck one is super underrated! Not alot of people know that 5160 is about 5x as tough as 1095 and 2x as tough as 52100. And that is without the amazing bos HT. If rust is not of your concern then this is one of the best knives money can buy! And im not just saying that as someone who thinks 100 bucks for a knife is alot! Most of my knives are 300-500 bucks but again i stand by my statement if rust is not a concern then the buck GCK is one of the best knives money can buy. This is also one of the only knives i bought twice. The tanto g10 and the drop point micarta. Says enough!

    • @ulary

      It's the sexiest one of this list in my opinion... but the blade stock is way too thick for my purposes... Personally I don't need to pry open crates... but I can understand it getting used for the purpose in theater. Also the sheath seems too bulky.

    Can you review the Marttiini autumn leaf series? Looks like an awesome alternative to mora

    • @mynamingislackluster3710
      @mynamingislackluster3710 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hate Marttiinis. The steel is crap (in my experience) the fit and finish is really bad and the handles are varnished. I love puukkos, but marttiini just makes them look bad. I just cant ignore the bad performance, bad guality and the slipery handle. It hurts to say as a Finn, but go with the mora they are better in every way. I know that marttiini makes more expensive puukkos that look quite good, but for that price range buying a knife made by a Finish knifesmith is just a lot better idea. I bought my first handmade puukko a few months ago, the performanse, guality and the handle are all amazing.

    • @monkeylovemagic3339

      Morakniv is better. The Vintage Marttiini knives are decent, but the new ones aren't as good IMO. Your money is better spent elsewhere
