I would tend to glaze the main body of the octopus first then wipe away any glay that got onto the buttons with a damp sponge, then go over and dot the glaze for the buttons on top. Any glaze that goes onto the main body where you don't want it can then be scrapped off once it's dried a little. If using oxides on the buttons, I don't worry about it getting under the glaze on the body as I feel it adds to the look but for more accuracy, you can use a fine brush and apply the oxide to the dip in the middle of each button then spread outwards.
