Nice review of your wife's FJ! After spending 15 years on a ZRX1200, I recently downsized to a leftover Versey 650. The ZRX was totaled when a unlicensed driver pulled a left turn in front of me, and the Versey was all I could afford with the insurance check. While i'm enjoying the upright ergos of the light weight of the Versey, I'm really missing the torque of a powerful engine. when funds permit, I've got my eye on the FJ 09. Wishing your wife many safe and happy miles!

Good review. I just sold a 2015 FJ-09 that I used to inspect cell towers in Australia. 62K miles with no mechanical issues. Changed the oil once a month (6K-8K miles) and the throttle bodies/valves never needed adjusting. The Michelin PR 4 GT's worked great on the red clay roads especially in the rain and a windshield extender helped direct air flow on hot days.

you really treated bad that motorcycle, manual says to change 5K Km at maximum, you doubled it

Nice review. the FJ09 seems to be a pretty good value. I'm trading up to it from a Versys 650, so it's very similar, but with a lot more power and a few things that were missing (IMO) from the Versys.

"My impressions after two weeks - it has a six-speed gearbox ..."
    Very astute observation ....

Believe it or not that's a big difference for me. I've never had a bike w. a 6 speed. All my other bikes have been 5 spds.

Great video - I've subscribed. I'm 73 and currently own a 2013 FJR1300A. I have been thinking about switching to the FJ09 to have less weight to deal with. What's your opinion of the fueling, especially in A-mode? On the forums, there is some discussion of having the ecu flashed to fix twitchy fueling issues.

A good review. I did a demo recently and didn't notice the problem with the mirrors. It would be interesting to have your wife do a review and compare it to yours. I'm not convinced it's a sports touring bike. Where does all the stuff that you pack in your Fjr side cases go on this bike? Side cases that won't hold a full size helmet, not likely. Yamaha, you should be giving away a backpack with this bike. My local dealer has 5 - 2015s in stock.

The red 2014 fjr cases can be mounted to the fj09 and look nice. The fj09 also offers flat faced city cases that won't hold a helmet but they do make it easier to lane split if you live in California or other parts of the world. After market Givi or Shad side cases are another option. We will eventually get cases for this bike. I plan to have my wife review her bike at some point in the next month or two.

Most three cylinder engines in motorcycles are crossplane with 120 degree crank angles; it's I4s that are typically flat plane. This is a bit of marketing on Yamaha's part as crossplane triples have been the standard for like 40 years.

You're probably right, although Yamaha hasn't traditionally done a lot of triples. Triumph has been the main company using triples to my knowledge. But anyway, I wasn't able to find any quickly accessible information about what plane configuration most triple engines used when I did a quick search before recording this video.

I'm really surprised you hated the mirrors so much. I've never seen any other review that complained about them much, most say they are good. I've never had a problem with mine. In some circumstances a slight movement of the elbow is required to see something close behind - or if you need to see the outside rear view on a bend.
Nice review otherwise. Hope your wife is enjoying her bike. :)

I've seen plenty of others on the forums complain about the mirrors. For me/my wife the mirror extenders completely fixed the issue.

Well done. If I could suggest one thing, when you finish a thought, just pause. Don't say "...and, umm ..."""

I am very new to motorcycling, having been off of them for roughly 35 years. Anyway, I am looking at getting an FJ 09, and I noticed some "tab" kind of piece on the throttle of your FJ 09 that I don't recall seeing before. What is that, and what is its use?

    • @sciencebiker9519

I believe you are referring to a crampbuster. Its a $10 piece of plastic which allows you to rest your hand on the throttle in a different position to prevent throttle hand fatigue.
