- Learn Fill-In Chords for Contemporary Christian Music
The video emphasizes the importance of incorporating fill-in or passing chords in contemporary Christian music (CCM) to personalize and enhance standard worship songs, moving beyond just the basic chords provided in sheet music.
I Introduce the concept of fill-in chords through examples like transitioning from C major to A minor using different inversions and chords, demonstrating how this technique can add musical interest and depth to a song.
I provide practical tips on implementing fill-in chords, highlighting the importance of stepwise bass movement and avoiding root position parallels in the right hand to maintain harmonic variety and smooth transitions.
An exercise is presented to practice harmonizing the major scale with chords in all 12 keys, aiming to build familiarity and ease in applying fill-in chords within a diatonic context, with a downloadable PDF for reference.
The video concludes with advanced tips for adding more complex chord movements to CCM songs, showcasing how strategic chord substitutions and inversions can create richer musical textures and emotional depth in worship music.

By harmonizing the major scale with diatonic harmony, I better understand this quote from Bill Evans: "There are no wrong notes, only wrong resolutions, I think of all harmony as an expansion and a return to the tonic."
This is something have been yearning for.

Hey Warren, just wondering if you still have dvd's for sale? I know you had made some in the past on certain courses, definitely be interested in purchasing if they were still available
Unfortunately we no longer sell DVDs. We discontinued them back in 2019.
Warren, very happy to have come across your channel today (watched several of your videos). I write mostly fusion - jazz/rock/funk, which seems parallel to what you are doing with gospel / worship music. Really appreciate the deep emotional vibe of what you are doing. Thank you for sharing - Kind regards from Seattle.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated ☺️🙌🏽
14:11 What about an Am/D? That sounds nice
Having this: C Am/D C/E …..
Plus, correct me if I’m wrong in this one: at 18:40 you picked the Gbaug7 because you are doing a 2-5-1 to go over the F right? You are doing the 2 - 5 followed by it’s tritone which is Gbaug7, and that falling nicely to the 4th chord which is F.
That’s what are you doing right there and the reason why you chose this Gbaug7 right? Just the 2 5, it’s tritone, and the 1 (the 4th chord) which is F.
The goal is to harmonize the scale using only triads. The Am/D isn’t a triad because D is not apart of Am.
You’re on the Gb(aug7), it’s the Tritone sub for C.
Warren I've seen your lessons on transcriptions... Would your be willing to do a recording of you transcribing a piece of music in real time. Kinda like how you've been doing the Yohan Kim stuff. Just so that we get to see you apply the stuff you talk about. Doesn't have to be a lesson. Hope you consider this suggestion!
Stay blessed!🤜🏾🤛🏾
I do this weekly in my paid program - I’ve done over 60 transaction lessons already
This is awesome Warren, I so much appreciate you for this. Am having issues downloading the Pdf file please, its telling me ...........*** Forbidden. Sender blacklisted. ***×

This lesson was simple yet so helpful. Thanks Warren!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching ☺️
This is crazy
Warren, how do you fill in when the last chord of the verse is the same as the first chord of the chorus? It feels boring to stay on the same chord. It seems when this happens, it is usually the "one" chord. I am playing organ instead of piano, if that makes any difference.
You can topically to a “walk up.” For example. If the last chords is a “C” and the chorus also start with a “C” you can go to the “G chord” and walk up “F/A to G/B” to C.
This is just the theory, but I’d need an actual song for practical applications, as there are other things to consider like the rhythm and timing.
@@PianoLessonwithWarren Thank you, Warren. I will try this. The song is Bienvenido Espíritu Santo (TH-cam ID nKyLfSkHlwA). The verse to chorus transition is at 1:30 to 1:50.
@@hacerclic1020Hi. I know this song, it seems that also all the instruments would have to make this fill in chords to reach nicely again to C to hit Chorus.
