Ep.10 - Rebuilding The Boat With Coroplast & Studs

- In the last episode, we were hit by a snowstorm that dumped so much snow on the Sputter Butt that it caved in the top of the boat. It was a complete loss. As soon as the weather improved in the Spring we began rebuilding.
Weight is definitely a concern since the pontoons on this boat are considerably smaller around than most pontoon boats this size. We decided to just build it like it needed to be built and then add a third pontoon or plastic barrels if needed.
We're covering the boat with Coroplast. It's waterproof, inexpensive and easy to use. We're also adding a small galley and a small head.
The actual trip down the Tennessee River will be challenging and getting the boat in shape for the trip has been a challenge in itself.

Good work. Looks like a much better and lighter design. Some louvered trailer house/camper windows would be sweet on that. Very adjustable for managing rain/wind while keeping the bugs out. Just a thought.
Brad Johnson We were looking for some windows just like that but we simply couldn't afford them. These windows are 4 feet by 3 1/2 feet and windows that size are really expensive (and heavy.) Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch and comment.
When you add a suction tube , to get water from the lake, make it about 2 feet below the water surface when in use. This will allow you to take on cleaner water, for what ever use. Filters can also be installed to make this water suitable for drinking !

I was worried to, because I had not studied up on the T. river. I took a gander at it very pleasant. But when pulling a structure down the road especially homes there is the problem of hitting thing. It's one of the reason I like building mobile units that the tops collapse down into the units. Then once its moved to its new location its easy to set it back up. How far are you going to have to move it, an did you get a permit because some state have laws and height regulations. That's why eighteen wheeler can only go some place. Nice job. Thanks! We're in the process of building a new, better boat that will use vinyl siding and a tin roof. The new boat also has a bigger motor and bigger pontoons. It will be a lower profile boat because it didn't need to be as tall as it was. Hopefully that'll get us past getting permits.
Nice Jeep Comanche in the background. You should check out the Comanche Club forums if you ever want to bring some more life into it. I rebuilt a 1989 Jeep Comanche using those forums. Very useful.... great community. Nice boat!!!

After working in engineering for about 40 years, I think I know good engineers when I see them. And not all good engineers have college degrees coming out the ying yang. And I certainly see good engineers in YOU guys! Seeing so much common sense and attitudes and abilities is wonderful. You have done a fantastic job on this project. Your powers of observation are a wonderful gift you use well. Engineers,regardless of formal education,need to have common sense, need to see what is in front of them and need to react to it.You are second to none, that I have seen.

If you. We're to alternate the flutes of the coroplast, it will give you more strength. Read correlation vertical then ran horizontal.... No need for plywood... I really liked the idea of conduit for the roof structure. .less weight when trailering and less horsepower to propel. Excellent use of local material.
We actually thought about alternating the flutes....after it was too late :(
If you take those metal straps that hold pallets of wood together and strap each one of those two by twos with an L bracket do the math it's going to quadruple the strength of your build I swear to you

The flutes or correlations in the coroplast also offer dead air space , which is one of the best insulation principals for homes. Great thinking out of the box guys.

Just curious... Did you register the boat into your own name before doing all these modifications to it?
TPWD shows It's registered as a 1966 16ft REDFISH with expiration date of 7-31-1983 out of Amarillo, TX.
So far looks great! Will it handle Highway speeds while being pulled?
Nevermind, Just realized your boat is a TN boat not a TX boat...I'm enjoying your videos!
One problem we did have while registering the boat, was that there was a mistake on the paperwork prior to us buying it. One of the digits was recorded as an O instead of a Zero. I had to do a rubbing of the Hull ID number and take it to the courthouse. The hard part about that, is that we built the wooden cabin directly on top of the number :P
When we towed it to the lake, we never drove above 35 mph. I feel like it would handle 45 mph with no problems. I really don't think it would handle 55 mph without it flying apart. Our solution in the future will be to sew a cover to fit over the whole boat so that we can go highway speeds.

You hand bent all the EMT? Goodjob lol! What screws/washer combo for attaching the coroplast?
+Justin Cooper Bret's an electrician but he was too tight to buy a conduit bender lol. I'm assuming you're an electrician or you wouldn't know what EMT is. It was a real struggle bending it over a wooden form. It took most of the day to do it. I threw the boxes away that the screws and washers came in long ago so I don't know what the exact sizes are, but the washers are about the size of a nickel and the screws were about 1 1/2 inches long. Put a flexible Solar panels on roof and replace the motor with a powerful electric one. also add 3 deep cycle yellow top batteries and you are good to go.

and i think it would have been really a smart idea if you would have put small tilt out Windows in above the big Windows to let out the heat & let in cool air as well
You're right, but we left the soffits open for that reason.

Thanks Marty!! It has braces that run from side to side, and the only cross braces are the Luan panels on every corner. We're hoping for the best, structurally speaking, and we think it'll be ok. It has withstood 50 mph winds with 80 mph gusts (while sitting in the driveway on a trailer). One of our biggest concerns is that we didn't use pressure treated wood. We really appreciate you watching the videos :)
Kinda groovy watching you guys, I am a big fan of sailing and I watch a lot of sailing videos. your videos are very different but I was impressed by both of ya'll sharing the workload in getting it done and your applied creativity. I hope you gave it some thought of finding someone to take you sailing for a few hours. I think it will be a new frontier for you.

How thick of coroplast did y'all use standard 4 mil or 10 mil
I don't remember, but it must have been the 4 mil, because it wasn't very thick, and without some support it was a little flimsy.
How much did this cost without the pontoons if you don't mind me asking
We have about $500.00 dollars in it not counting the pontoons and motor.
With all due respect, why in the world did you use Coroplast? That stuff isn't strong and will dry rot in a couple of seasons, and then you are going to have to cover it all over again.
Using Coroplast is an experiment because of its light weight. We agree with you that we're going to have to replace some of it in a few years, but probably only the roof, which is pretty easy to replace and will cost under a hundred bucks. The sides are not exposed like like the top is. We're pleased with it so far. It's been on the boat for over a year now and there are no signs of degradation anywhere. We're currently building a barn big enough to house the boat so it will only be exposed a few days (or weeks) per year. It has proved to be strong since it is screwed down in so many places. We're keeping our fingers crossed about the whole thing. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!!

What did you use to attach the coroplast to the studs?
I think they were 1 1/2 inch screws (with washers) We screwed it down about every one foot. It seems to hold ok. Thanks for watching!!
I just got an order of Coroplast. I'm really interested in this method for building DIY small structures. Let me know if the roof blows off or something! ! LOL ! We do get somewhat high winds in my area but not many bad rains. Yet. I suppose global warming will have some impact over the next few decades.
Mike Nestle Now you've piqued our interest! I hope you video and share whatever it is you're going to build with your Coroplast. We will watch it and share it if you decide to upload it to TH-cam. Our roof has held up in 50 mph sustained winds several times, and one time it was reported that we had 70 mph winds, but who knows if it was true. I do know that there are different thicknesses of Coroplast, and recently we heard of a PVC sheeting that we are considering putting on the roof when it's time to change it, but we're completely satisfied with the Coropast walls. My only complaint with the Coroplast roof is that water gets in the corrugations and causes it to discolor in places. Please send us a link if you make a video of your builds!

My boyfriend and I are converting an old pontoon boat ( 24 foot pontoon double ) to a houseboat...well we are trying.. Wondering if you have any advice on what to make our structure out of? (is chloroplast acceptable for a whole structure?) We are staying in the Midwest for two more months (July and August) and then have plans to head south via the Ohio and Mississippi River. Our problem is weight, we could use some good advice, especially because we plan on crossing the Mississippi Delta. Love your channel! We love your real world advice and experience for traveling, you guys rock!

Hey Allanah! We're sorry that it took us so long to reply. We took an extended motorcycle trip to the east coast so we weren't able to respond on our phones for some reason. It was really aggravating! We're abandoning the Coroplast. It held up fine on the sidewalls, but it failed miserably on the roof. The sun and the rain was too much for it. We started a complete rebuild on a bigger pontoon boat. We've decided to use a tin roof and vinyl siding for the sidewalls. It'll be more like a house so it should be able to stand up to the elements this time. As for the structure, we're happy with 2x2's. They're strong enough and they're lightweight. We're going to use single pane windows. Your pontoon is 4 feet longer than our new one. Have you started converting it yet, and if you have, did you video it? We'd love to see your build!! We would also love to watch your trip on the Ohio and Mississippi also.
