YYZ is the call sign for Toronto-Pearson International Airport. The opening of the song is a simiulation of the morse code tfansmisdion given out for aircraft transponders to recognize. Alex Lifeson, who is a pilot heard it and thought it would be a great idea for a song. The song represents the controlled chaos of a major airport. The solo Alex created has a touch of Indian influence to honor the international travelers coming through the airport. Great song!

Close. Neil heard it, Alex was flying.
If you want to hear the Indian (eastern European as well) influence, listen to the Vitamin String Quartet's version.

Alex was up in the cockpit. Geddy and Neil heard it over the transponder and thought it would be cool opening to a song. they were jamming to it as Alex walked in and heard it then added his parts

Even though you heard the studio version of YYZ you really need to hear the live version ,, YYZ live in Rio , 60,000 fans singing to an instrumental, And also this song was one of the top songs for Guitar Hero , With 2112 you do need the Studio version , USA the Cartoon one , a you real,y need to follow the lyrics , it would even be a good idea to check out just the lyrics first , this is about a tyrant society that does not allow music , a guy finds a guitar and try’s to convince the society leader to accept the guitar , The singer Bass player sings all the characters in this rock opera ,

Keep in mind, this is only three guys - all those "sound effects" are being made by Alex, Neal, and Geddy as just one more part of all the rest of this energy torrent! Definitely check out the live version of this song from the "Rush in Rio" DVD - the sight of 40,000 Brazilians singing along to an *instrumental* is one not to be missed!

I'd say go listen to the Primus covers of those songs and get a better appreciation for the bass lines that get lost in the Rush versions. Primus somehow takes exactly what was written reproduces it very faithfully but with that Primus twang that accentuates every note to the 11th degree.

In the 90's, I had a rock band, we played out one night per week. 1 other night, we swapped out our singer and played with our sax player, and played jazz and blues, instrumentals. Eventually a singer, a black dude, soul singer, phenomenal talent could sing anything, saw us and asked us to be part of his dance/funk/disco/top 40 band, and we in fact did join forces. That eventually morphed in to our busiest work, which also paid the best. 3 white rockers as the rhythm section, and the rest were black dudes, and a black female singer. I know colors aren't important, but I'm trying to set the stage and help you visualize it. It was actually fun. Not as challenging as we wanted, and didn't really fill our appetite, but it was a great time, and we played cruises, clubs, bars, festivals, etc. Anyway, we created a sub section in the middle of of Disco Inferno, where the rest of the band dropped out, and me (percussion), our bass player, and guitar player broke in to a segment of YYZ. We kind of rocked it out a little harder though, as in a heavier metal edge, mostly to really exaggerate the rock sound and make it obvious we broke off into something heavy, but still the exact pieces nonetheless. It was very cool to see certain people in the crowd pick it up, and recognize. They'd start bobbing their heads, metal style, rushing the stage to "whoooooo, yeah man!!!", letting us know they caught the drift, and even the people dancing, of all colors, kept dancing, and always broke out in to a cheer. I could tell that many cheered because they recognized it, and the others because we broke away from the disco song and rocked out to the same tempo. I got a kick out of that and will always love that memory.

This song is an instrumental based upon guitarist Alex Lifeson's frequent dream sequences/nightmares that he has experienced, hence the rapid alteration in tempos - almost without warning - because no-one's dreams are that sequential; also, as a side note, 'YYZ' is the international morse code call sign for Lester Pearson International Airport, Toronto - RUSH's nearest for flights out of/across Canada. When I first heard this track, i thought it was just an extended jam session 😁 Keep safe, you three !!

YYZ (YYZeta, yes Canadians say Zeta not Z)
This is the name of the Toronto airport which they named this toon after as it was the sign of coming home from a long tour.
This song had so much in it that it inspired other musicians who were following them at the time of this record's release as they were a musician's band.
Eddie Van Halen openly admitted he was listening to this album when it came out.
In fact, he was so influenced by them he started using Keyboards as well. Just listen at 3:54 and hear the keyboards then go back and play the song from Van Halen's 1984 Album "I'll wait."
Additionally, you can hear some of the beat it chords through this song as well.

Cool Brad's brother came to visit, looks a lot like him, hope you're all having great time.
Wow, first time i see you're listening to an instrumental... and I was not on or around to witness it! :-/ Rush has a few, "La Villa Strangiato", "Where's My Thing", "Leave That Thing Alone", YYZ being one of the better well known. You should check out them playing this song live in Rio in 2002. Most audiences do jam along but in that Rio gig it's really special.
    It starts in 10/8 time: C F# C C , C F# C C , C C F# F# ( in morse code -.--, -.--, --.. is Y,Y,Z )
YYZ (Y Y Zed) is the calling sign for Toronto-Pearson International Airport (in aviation chat) - So, what does that mean? Well for Rush - "It's Home", they're from the Toronto area.

Rush has many instrumentals, and this is one of their best, and certainly one of the most popular. For what is their most musically difficult instrumental, check out their song "La Villa Strangiatto," from their album "Hemishperes." Many top drummers, like former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, consider this to be a real effort to play properly, and that song forced Rush to give up on always making more and more complex songs as "challenges," and instead, make their songs even more musical, and led to the album "Moving Pictures," which featured "Tom Sawyer." But I still believe that the albums "A Farewell to Kings (77)" and Hemispheres (78)" saw Rush at the top of their "Progressive Rock" form.

One can hear the staccato influence of the earlier Genesis song, "Watcher of the Skies". In that one, Peter Gabriel is an alien exploring an abandoned planet Earth, wondering aloud about the people who built all the wonders that he sees, and then disappeared.

Probably a tough listen for non-Rush heads. All instrumental, very angular and lots of meter changes.
The musicianship is incredible, and Alex's guitar solo in harmonic minor, which is uncommon in Rush music, is just legendary.

Many people believe that "Moving Pictures" was Rush moving away from prog rock into the mainstream... but that's simply wrong. Rush made a decision to write shorter songs, which took their musicianship and creativity into a more 'compact' presentation. "YYZ" is a magnificent prog song, it just didn't need to be 15 minutes long.

  • @AppStateSpanky

This is "the song that was never ment to be a song". Neil (drummer) and Getty (bass) were jamming out one day. Alex (guitar) came in and upon hearing it wanted in on it. He laid down his guitar track over top of what they were doing. It was ment to be a 2 person Jam which is why the give and take solo's in the song are only the bass and drums.
