I was in this crowd, almost 20 years ago! This was in Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro (near to my hometown), november 23th 2002. Artists say we are the best crowd of the word!

I've watched the documentary on this tour. Absolutely epic!! I've seen Rush about a half dozen times here in New Jersey / New York. They were loved here no doubt, but you guys really showed up the entire world on how to attend a concert.
Unless your band sucks, then they're violently brutal.
Please keep in mind only 3 people are making all that sound. Incredible musicians. Everything about the band is outstanding.

All three of them were absolute MASTERS of their respective instruments. There was never, and, never will be another Rush. R.I.P. Professor!
Truly amazing how the planets aligned to create Rush. Doubtful you’ll see another trio of masters like them again.
When you’ve meshed that well for that long, you’re no longer just band mates or even just friends. You’re blood.
When I was a kid I heard a guy refer to this as "Heavy Metal Jazz" and I think that term really nailed it.
Alex and Geddy got their first guitars at 12 or 13, but I'm pretty sure Neil was born with a drumstick in his hand.
Al and Ged have been hanging out with each other ever since. Truly grade school buddies that conquered the world of prog rock. And the world of prog rock will never be the same since the loss of Neil.
The best part of this performance is knowing this is three guys from Canada that formed a band 35 years before this, were given mild reviews in the mid 70s from critics calling them a Led Zeppelin knock off and eventually having their music span the globe and so popular they can play a concert five thousand miles away in a country where English is not the national language, have forty thousand people show up and the audience actually sings along with the instrumentals. I watch this video about once a year and it hits me in the feels every time.
You have to constantly remind yourself...THIS IS JUST THREE GUYS!!! Words can't describe their level of mastery over their instruments.
The best guitarist + the best bassist + the best drummer = Rush.
I'm bold enough to say that Rush is likely the best rock band to have ever existed.
Rush was my 1st concert... 1983 Signals tour... Awesome show.

Mine was in 1981 in Dallas - Moving Pictures. I was 14, and my friend's brother waited in line all night to get tickets. He got us 2nd row right in front of Alex. $10. TEN DOLLARS! (They took 6th row because it was center, so we really got the better deal). We were 4 little girls all wearing white tube tops thinking we were cool.
Hey super cool we had 3rd row in front of speakers on the side at the late great Omni downtown Atlanta.
I’m 69 years old so rush was right in generational wheelhouse. Having said that, I never really “got them” in my formative years. Flash forward 40 some odd years and my work colleague who was a Rush fanatic convinced me to go the see them during the Clockwork Angels tour. BLEW ME AWAY!! I could not believe what I was seeing and this is from a guy that saw Cream live in Vancouver in 68’. Chalk up another massive Rush fan. Needless to say, I also went to see them on their final 40 year tour. Simply an amazing, amazing band. And fellow Canadians. Bonus.

Second album just released. Professor Peart had just joined them for that album. The fans actually booed Nazareth in about their 3rd song. Started chanting "Rush, Rush, Rush". Seems this happened a bit to often so from what I remember they never finished the tour!
Seen them live 4x. They've always played this song and it was always performed note for note.
Me, saw them a bunch too and the last few times they played this in master class fashion. Saw them a couple time before this song was published, they always brought the hammer of the gods, Anthem was killer, too.
Only bit I ever see them miss is that harmonic at the end of Geddy's third mini-solo (he misses it here, too, I think). Which is fair. Harmonics are tough, at least for me.
They have been playing together for 40 years.Its outstanding chemistry and talent.

The 10 times I've seen Rush live, they've always done this, and for me, there's no bad performance of it. The Rio show is a whole other level, though. Not only are Geddy, Alex and Neil absolutely on fire, the crowd's enthusiasm (they're singing along to an instrumental!) just takes the song to someplace really special. I miss Rush, but they certainly deserve their well-earned retirement. And rest in peace, Professor.
Rush was the first concert I ever attended, way back in 1986... and still the best live band I've ever seen.
"Moving Pictures" was really the album where RUSH took all of the lessons they learned through the 70s and made their songs a more audience-friendly length. "YYZ" is the track from that album where they flexed their "prog" muscles in a jazz-influenced structure--as only RUSH could--in a running time under 5 minutes. 40 years later, I still absolutely love that album (I still think it was RUSH's masterpiece).
Absolutely agree. Seminal. The first side is a tour de force, but the deep tracks are SO strong, too. I love The Camera Eye and Vital Signs.
Gods of Rock. They are on another level which is why they are known as the musician's musicians.

The Brazil shows will always stand out in music history. RUSH had never played Brazil, as they had no idea that they were popular there. Once they added a few shows in Brazil to their tour, the shows sold out almost immediately. And a nation of longing fans finally got to see them live for the first time. Rush opened with 'Tom Sawyer' on their first show in Brazil and half the audience was in tears. By the time they played YYZ, the entire crowd was chanting a spontaneous melody over the song. Something that had never happened before, and never since. However, at almost every RUSH concert, no matter where they played, audiences often sang 'Closer To the Heart' in unison. Though Neil has passed and Alex as well as Geddy are retired, I'll always appreciate the vast, deep catalog they left for future generations to analyze and enjoy. RUSH was one of a kind, and will always be an endless source of pride for Canada for creating them, and Cleveland, OH for having the first radio station to play them in the US.
Not only playing since very young, but playing together since they were very young. They learned together.
I've read that, when they agreed to do the shows in Brazil, they honestly had no idea how many people would want to see them there. They figured they must have some fans, sure, but how many would think it was worth it to go see them? Then watching that video. Holy crap that must have been such an amazing feeling for the three of them. (and of course, for the entire crowd as well, who are going wild)
Neil Peart is arguably the greatest to ever play the drums (R.I.P.). It's been said that Neil is your "favorite drummer's favorite drummer".
I've seen them live several times. Absolutely one of the best bands in my lifetime. They are incredible! Wish Neil was still with us. He wrote many of their songs.

Y’all are starting to get to an understanding of just how this threesome is a stand alone one-off a kind unique group. Reading the lyrics to some of the songs like the garden, time stand still, natural science. That these are not just words written down to make a song these are thoughtful insightful words to ponder
The question to ask next Lex, was how did they do that note after note for over 3 hours when they were in their 60's?
Nothing more can be said other than Rush were masters of their craft. Three people making this wonderful combination of bass, synthesizer, guitar, drums and voice. Don't forget, with the exception of their debut, Neal wrote all, if not most of the band's lyrics for 40 years.
You two have witnessed three of the best rock musicians of all time playing one of the coolest rock songs without any vocals, that shows the talent and huge sound that three maestros can make.
If you didn't realize this, that crowd at that concert I believe is in Brazil, the audience was singing, the whole audience, was singing the notes to the music as if they were signing words to the song. As far as I know, no band or song has ever had that much influence over people when played live.
I learned this bass line within my first year of playing. It took 7 months, at times learning one measure at a time. I ended up playing it front of my high school. So rewarding.
Brilliant musicians and to see Rush live was always such an experience! Rip Professor, you are missed! 🥰

SO glad that you reviewed the live version. Arguably some of the most talented musicians on their instruments. Rush has complicated, unique music and transitions.
I've seen Rush live 4 times and each show was without a doubt the greatest concert I've ever been to! RIP NP 🙏
I used to see them when just a club band in Toronto's club scene. No matter what club it was always packed
Rush is a band that happens once in a century, they influenced most of the contemporary rock and metal bands, and they had a love for music that was on the same wavelength for each of them, always the same 3 guys throughout their long career.
Rush is always amazing. Always. And though I'm sure some other Canadians have already said it, it's Y Y Zed. We Canadians have different pronunciations...
They compose and record and play it such a high level. That's why musicians really like them on top of a whole bunch of other people. We truly appreciate how difficult what they are doing is and how much endurance it takes to do entire shows with that level of intensity and complexity. But they definitely know how to rock, that's for sure. Try "Something For Nothing" .... a real Banger with great lyrics and an incredible guitar solo and it's not real long.
I saw Rush three times in Providence, Rhode Island and I promise you there is no better concert, no better talent. I LOVE Rush

The difference between the novice and the master is that the master has failed more times than the novice has even tried. If you work hard, really care, and put in the time and dedication into something, you do have the ability to become just as talented as your heroes.
RUSH was playing the night before my State Board of Nursing Exam in Austin, Texas…um a few years ago at the Convention Center. It was awesome. We were late starting our Exams because of all of the tables not being set up on time. ♥️🎶

I will never not "Like" this video whenever and wherever it comes up. It's one of the great Rock instrumentals of all time, sure...but more importantly, it's just so damn *fun.*

During my life I have been to 7 RUSH concerts this one by far was my favorite, I worked as a rock radio station DJ and had the privilege to interview the band after. I was having a hard time separating my job from fan that night. The Professor (RIP) was and is the GOAT of drummers; then to realize he wrote most of the lyrics (More like stories) you have to live in awe of him. The band was so close that when Peart's wife died he went on a few-year journey by motorcycle across the Americans and the other two said there is no RUSH without all three so they waited for him. Now think the rest of the band finish in the top 10 of their peers. This was the real GOAT of rock music.

Brad is right Lex, if it's your job your fingers get used to it. Most musicians love what they do, so it's no chore. I used to practice 5 hours a day, and loved every minute. No sore fingers. Thankyou Brad & Lex.

The crowd is crazy for them and for good reason, they are putting on a musical clinic and an instrumental masterpiece. One of the best hard/prog rock bands and the choice of all rocking nerds back in the 70s & 80s. Rock On! Try Anthem from them, more mastery for you to enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Imagine being there at Rush's concert when they played this classic live! My friends and I have in 2010 when Rush were on their Time Machine tour. West Palm Beach location was one of their concerts' stops back in Oct. 2010. Like the audience here, audience in WPB were getting into the classic song.

Talent, dedication, discipline ,motivation. Lots of practice. Extra amazing.
Why is it that music is the only medium where being excellent on your instrument isn't normal.
The Rio audience was the star of this song - they turned the band into a quartet.
They are serious musicians. No alcohol, no drugs, no drunken performances. They put in serious practice time with each other. Geddy and Eric let their first drummer go because he wasn't serious about practice and no partying. You can hear him on their first album, he was a good drummer too, but not dedicated to the music like Eric and Geddy. Neil was the first drummer they interviewed and he had the right attitude. They agreed that they would share their profits equally no matter who did what on each song. They paid their roadies well. Three stand-up guys.
It is actually Alex not Eric and yes they did do some weed and actually some coke in the very early years to get them through their grueling touring schedule at that time. Both Alex and Geddy have wine cellars so yes they do drink but NOT before performances. They were serious about their music. If you listen to the most recent interview with them from George Stromo they talk about that and how Neil's passing is still effecting them.

You should check out the beginning of their rock and roll hall of fame induction show. When Jann Wenner merely mentions the city of Toronto, the place goes NUTS. He doesn't even get to say their name. And the camera is on Rush's table.......Geddy's wife is absolutely shocked by the response. It's one of the sweetest things you've ever seen.
This was the first time they ever went to Rio. Just about every Rush fan in the country that could get there, was there.

There's a reason that I saw them 16 times...they were that good. Probably my favorite show was the moving pictures tour in Hartford.

my mom took me to my first RUSH concert in 1975 they were opening for Charlie Daniel's at a radio station free concert in a park, at 57 I am a proud RUSH fan who got to see this amazing band the first and last time the R 40 tour and many in between in my hometown .
First time I seen rush they opened for Charlie daniels in utica NY I was hooked

I'm happy to see your Rush reactions. I saw them in Toronto with ACDC, the Rolling Stones. And the Tea party just to name a few. It was a huge concert with a lot of bands and over 700 000 people attending. It was crazy

Virtuosity and exactitude, rolling along on a fun vibe~! Their concerts were epic, and this wasn't even an example of the drummer's usual philosophical lyrics. The crowd sang along anyway!

They've been together forever. Neil Peart ( drummer ) has over 40 years in the band and they call him " the new guy" lol! They are hard workers. Check out their documentary RUSH Beyond The Lighted Stage.
YYZ is a rhythmically challenging song.
Rush is a very tight band.
Not many rock bands have this much consistency live.
