      Yes I think it was definitely made to reflect your mortality.
      Dust to dust is mentioned in Ecclesiastes 3:20, "All are from the dust, and to dust all return." In the Bible, this passage emphasizes that humans and animals are no different and that everyone is made up of the earth and will return to the earth.

      This feeds into the other question "When would you play a song like this?"
      Maybe when you want to hear a beautifully profound and haunting song... or, you know, when you get older.
      Which made me think of this one Rush lyric: "We're only immortal for a limited time". Getting older, having people around start to move on from this life... the song hits me differently now as compared to when I was in my 20's.
      Finally, that one line from this song about life: "And all your money won't another minute buy". This is less true now than when the song was written. I expect it to be even less true in the future, for the very wealthy. We, the people, should take notice of this, and make sure quality healthcare is available to everyone, not just the rich.

      Yeah, I think if she is looking for how to describe a LOT (not all) of modern music is "generic". Especially in pop music. A lot of music today is designed off of a formula that reaches out to the widest audience utilizing song structures that are found to be most appealing on the surface. Back then, it was about finding a different sound and structure and trying something that may even be considered taboo for the time simply because it fit the vision of the song author and performers.

      artists had more freedom to record what they wanted, rather than what their record label wanted, from about 1970-76 than they ever had before or since. 3 of the biggest exceptions to this generalization are the beetles, michael jackson, and prince. they did what they wanted to in the 60s, 80s, and 90s. point is that "purposefully made to have an intimate sound" has been just as true at other times, but these groups had the creative freedom to see that intimate sound come to fruition. this is true of fleetwood mac, boston, foreiner, doobie brothers, zeppelin, peter frampton, bee gees, stevie wonder, meat loaf, pink floyd, and anyone else making albums between woodstock and disco.

      The guitar started out as a finger-picking exercise by one of the guitarists and his wife thought it could be a song and encouraged him to play it for the rest of the band and there were a lot of other elements that just came together to make this masterpiece.

  • @thewiseoldherper7047
    @thewiseoldherper7047 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    The reason older songs sound “intimate“ is because they were written by people who had a artistic passion to express themselves. They pour their whole life into their music. The stars today are picked for their looks as much as anything. The music is secondary because they can digitally make you sound like anything and it’s just gonna be a near copy of something that’s already out.

      Brad got it right - where would you listen to this song? At the cottage/cabin, on the radio, at church, at a concert? I listen to this song when we're driving long distances to another city or camp. Dust In The Wind is a great song for its time. Two years ago, I bought "Hits From The 70s" and this tune was on it. I'm born in the 80s, but instead of listening to fast guitars, fast drums, metal and bandmembers screaming when they're singing. This song gave us a break with Dust In The Wind which is softer and you can understand the lyrics.

    As a teenager this song left me with a feeling of wonder and curiosity. In the Autumn of my life it brings a lump to my throat. All our lives are beautiful and precious - something tragically transient, yet unique and hauntingly beautiful. It makes me think of Rutger Hauer in the original Bladerunner,
    “I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”'
    Thats how I feel, I've never seen attack ships off the shoulder of Orion, but I've seen, felt and experienced things in my life that have moved me and overwhelmed me at times leaving me speechless or lost in wonder to be a part of this shared experience of conscious awareness, and all those things which are my own observations and contributions will be lost in time, like tears in rain, when I die. Haunting, beautiful.

    About 30 years ago, my husband and I took a trip to San Fransisco. We took a tour through Muir Woods to check out the Redwoods.. I had my Walkman with me and we shared the headphones and sang, fully out loud, “Dust in the Wind” over & over! It was the perfect song in that moment for us to express what those trees were making us feel.. so small.. such a tiny fragment of time alive.. so very humbled.. in comparison to the life of those beautiful giants.. kinda put things into perspective..and yet, even those colossal trees will, one day, succumb to being Dust in the Wind. Nothing is forever. Cherish everything in every moment. That song will forever take me back to that time in the Redwoods and will forever serve as an example of what that song means to me.

They were such a tight band with no computer electronics, just a mastery of the instruments.

    Kansas was/is an American progressive rock band. Progressive rock is usually characterized by conceptual lyrics and longer, more complex music. Although this is a slow mellow, song, Kansas has some wild, extremely fast tempo songs. As to Brad's question as to "what where people doing in the 70's with this" - we bought albums and LISTENED intently to the whole record!! . Two lead singers (Steve Walsh here) and Robby Steinhardt (R.I.P.) who also was an incredible violinist (his violin was an integral part of the band's music).

    The Violin is in most of Kansas songs its a staple of their music. This was their highest selling and rated song even though they are known for Carry on my Wayward son, the song that started it all for them. My mother who is 80 loves Kansas and wants this song played at her funeral. I have to say I would too.

    Kansas was a very popular prog rock band from the mid 70s to early 80s. They had 2 platinum albums, 'Leftoverature' (1976) and 'Point of No Return' (1977). Both records are worth hearing from start to finish.
    "Dust in the Wind" is from 1977 album and is the biggest song from it. The song was written by Kerry Livgren (acoustic guitar, lead guitar, keyboards) and it was originally a finger picking exercise that became a song. The lead singer is Steve Walsh, who also plays keyboards. The violinist is Robbie Steinhardt (RIP) who also supplies backing vocals.
    "Carry On Wayward Son" is their other most well known song. You've probably heard that one! ✌🎼🎸🎤

    RIP Robby Steinhardt, violinist and co-lead singer for Kansas. He passed just last year at the age of 71, so this song has a particular irony. This is a song you'd play late at night, maybe when you're winding down and getting ready to hit the sack. Or maybe you have this included in a mellow play list when you have a few friends over and want something playing quietly in the background. And of course, it has been played at many funerals.

    It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind” , both pull inspiration from : I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man on earth, and I concluded: everything he has accomplished is futile - like chasing the wind!
    "Dust in the Wind" is a song recorded by American progressive rock band Kansas and written by band member Kerry Livgren, first released on their 1977 album Point of Know Return.
    The song peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 22, 1978, making it Kansas's only single to reach the top ten in the US. The 45-rpm single was certified Gold for sales of one million units by the RIAA shortly after the height of its popularity as a hit single. The song was certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA on November 26, 2019, which makes it the second song by the band to reach platinum after "Carry on Wayward Son."[2]

    So many rock guitar players and bands got their start in folk music. That beautiful guitar picking you hear throughout is classic folk! Many of us had musical education starting to in elementary school. Getting together and jamming with our instruments and voices was commonplace! This is why we need musical education in all schools- it opens up universes and possibilities to all. It’s always the right time for beautiful music!!!

    A song that one has to know to fully appreciate the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. The heart of the band was the violinist Robbie Steinhardt (who just died this year). The song writer was Kerry Livgren who was exploring religious themes. He would later become a born again Christian and wound up alienating the rest of the band. (I don't think they were anti-Christian, just anti being preached to). They are still touring, but minus the three most influential members, the main songwriter, the singer, and the violinist (who was also the frontman when I saw them live, but that was after the original singer had quit). But the role players of the band are all still there.
    They were the best musicians I have seen live.

    Kerry Livgren (KANSAS guitarist, who wrote Dust In The Wind) searched through a few different religions before becoming a Christian. This song shows some of that searching. There's a thing called Arena Rock that is not intimate. KISS, for example, is arena rock. And, as Lex astutely observed, later AC/DC is arena rock.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a fine line for bands to straddle. And I'd call it Stadium Rock…AC/DC certainly had larger ambitions than just arenas. Several bands (Rush, Styx, Deep Purple) started out prog but got louder and harder, and had their prog roots diminish to various degrees. REO Speedwagon was a boogie band, essentially, but hit it big with the softer [sellout crap] singles, and ended up in bigger arenas, too.
      Kansas never quite reached the biggest level (although they certainly sold records) and as such stayed perhaps closest to their original sound. And then, of course, they were destroyed by other factors…

    Kansas was one of several popular progressive Rock bands of the 1970s. The late 1960s and early 1970s was a time of musical exploration. Young musicians experimented with new musical instruments and incorporated and combined various musical genres in new, unexpected ways. Progressive Rock was a natural outgrowth of the experimental Psychedelic period.
