  • In this tutorial I'll show you how to remove pasta machine fenders no problem. There's no need to disassemble your machine. Keep in mind that some machines might be different from mine. Mine are cheap machines from eBay. Please check that your machine's fenders are attached the same as mine before having at them with the pliers.

    MIND BLOWN! Just watched the video, and DID IT in less than 5 minutes! I've avoided taking the guards off because I thought I'd have to take the whole thing apart to do it. Nope! Easy Peasy!! Thanks for sharing!

    I've discovered a couple of things I thought I'd share. The first comes from polymer clay artist, Yonat Dascalu. She puts a block of Fimo on the pasta machine to stop the clay expanding. One side of clay against the side of the pasta machine and the other butted-up against a block of Fimo. It works! The second comes from my own experiments. To clean my pasta machine, I put a babywipe through on the thickest setting a couple of times. Then I fold a good quality piece of kitchen paper and put that through a couple of times. It also works!

    Well, that took less than 5 minutes and it is so satisfying to now have a thoroughly clean pasta machine! Thank you, Samantha. I'd have never had the notion that those fenders could be removed.

    Update...i was using my pasta machine after I removed guards and poof the rollers fell off and I was not able to put it back together.
    I just bought a new one. After I flipped out cuz I was near a projects end. N had to wait about a week for new one... I am arthritic so can't use regular hand rollers. Anyways don't know if it was the cause but just be aware...
    Omg...
    THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN...for 3 years I have tried to figure a way to remove the guards... Never knew it would take all of 5 minutes if that.. Wow what a mess inside... I have cut myself on the guards I have thumb scars wow. Thank you so so much for this!!! Now my machine is usable... I was getting pits n peeling in all my good clay thanks again!!!

    Be aware when trying this with an Atlas. They are made with a stronger stainless steel and it doesnt bend easily. I still had to take the bottom and side off, not hard but just a bit more work. Still I've been meaning to take the fenders off and this gave me the push to do it. Now my machine is nice and clean. Thanks Samantha ❤

    I had my husband do this about an hour ago. I have an Atlas 180. It is a game changer. I had so much clay stuck that I could have made a small skinner blend. And i cleaned my machine after every use and sometimes during use. Being able to get on the ledge, is so much better and you know its clean. Instead of just guessing. Thanks so much.

    most Marcado and Atlas machines have a screw on the side without the thickness dial.You can remove that and then use a wrench to remove the bold inside that allows you to open up the one side so that you can easily remove the fenders and even the blades to clean. No need for a husband.😆 I have a video on my youtube channel showing how. This won't work on all machines, but most of them do come apart this way.

    • @Yosofool

    • @MagsBCreations

      @@Yosofool I was just suggesting that you can easily remove the fenders by removing the one side, instead of having to go at them with pliers and possibly cutting yourself or marring your rollers.

    For people with an Atlas 180 - I was able to remove the fenders off using this plier method! It was tough, since the metal is quite strong, but with patience and strength (I did have “guy” help) they’re now off and I am a happy camper!!!

      With an old Atlas 150...built like a tank...I found (when working the 2nd side) that pulling the fender from the bottom first gave me more leverage. Also in the front of the roller area there are sharp screws under the fender holding the enclosure on, so I glued small round beads on the points so neither the clay nor my hands get jabbed!

    I think taking off the end with the handle (or both ends) might be a better way to go. This allows you full access to the hidden sides of the scrapers, so you can do a thorough clean of them every few months. Also you can then remove the fenders without bending them with pliers, so you can still get better access to do a frequent clean of the blades with a wooden barbecue skewer or similar.
    You do need access to a few simple tools to take the side(s) off and the job is quite fiddly.

    It's a bit more complicated with an atlas 150. The fenders are heavier, they won't bend like this. You have to remove several sets of screws. It is doable though. I confess I relied on husband but I am not handy like that. It takes both metric and other tools, or it did for us. But ..... we got er' done and cleaning will be so much better!

    I pulled my machine apart starting with the base plate and the the side screws and so on the whole machine comes apart for cleaning this also alluded me to add grease to the cogs that the rollers have hidden under the sides.
    As for the clay between the rollers and blades I use the smallest crochet hook that you can get which is made of stainless steel the hook helps to pull the clay out.
    The guards are there to stop the clay dropping on the back of the roller unless you are holding the clay the whole time your rolling it which is not easy to do while turning the handle. Since adding a machine to mine the guards come in handy as I can focus on the clay feed out and not the clay feed in.
    As for cleaning the machine I clean it every time I use it as some of my clays leach colour on some of them special the dark reds and it leaves colour on the rollers I have found that a baby wipe can be feed between the rollers and blade and you can slide it back and forth while the rollers are turning and it helps to remove the clay from the blades and roller at the same time just cut the baby wipes into one inch strips as this helps to feed between the rollers and blades.
    I have found the best way to clean the machine is to pull it apart at least once every other month so all the parts can be cleaned including the cogs and they get regressed before putting it all back together again. As this does take time it’s best to have two machines one for working with and one that you can strip down and clean.😊😊😊😊😊

    Lovely tutorial on cleaning. I have to admit I was shocked at how you wrenched off the tabs on the fenders/guards - I have removed mine by pressing in the sides with a clamp to create more space then pulling the tab back then up, and with the slack the others come out with a wiggle at most. Replacing it is the same in reverse and taking the clamps off (I needed to remove a foreign object little fingers had posted.) Those same little fingers are the reason I need to leave the guard on. I suppose the plastic inside is fine for normal/pasta use, but polymer clays effect some plastics (I now wonder if the machines labeled specificly as for polymer clay take this into account, or if they just rebrand and up the price tag?) Anyway, nice tutorial :)

      I'd recommend a Jamie Oliver machine if you can get one. That's the best one I've had. Most of mine are cheap ones from Kmart.

      You'll need to check the pasta machine. My metal flaps were slotted into a gap on each side of the machine. Some machines have their flaps fussed to the rest of the machine.

    Wonderful! I'm getting ready to remove my guards! Thanks. Question: I have a cheap pasta machine and I've always wondered about thickness settings on cheap pasta rollers. So many have Marcato Atlas brand pasta machines and I was wondering if you have a favorite brand. Thanks for all of the help and excellent tutorials!

    • @JessamaTutorials
      @JessamaTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I pretty much use cheap pasta machines too. I don't really have a preferred brand.
      What I like to do is buy four machines. One for black, one of warm color, one for cool colors and the other for white. This isn't necessary, but is easier to do if the machines are cheap.

    Do you put the fenders back on or leave them off? I have an older machine with metal blades on the bottom. I’ve not been able to clean it properly and always makes such a horrible noise when I turn the crank. Bought a new pasta machine and haven’t used it yet. But I can see now it has plastic bottom blade. Wouldn’t of known that without this video. Thank you!

      I leave the fenders off. They don't serve a purpose for me and it's easier to keep them off.

      Awww too bad. Do you currently recommend a particular pasta machine. How would I know if a model has plastic blades? I was looking on Amazon but didn’t see any designation although I only looked superficially as I was looking for the brand you mentioned.
      Right now I am using an actual pasta machine but it’s bigger and bulkier. I want to get an actual polymer clay “pasta” machine.

    • @JessamaTutorials
      @JessamaTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid it's luck of the draw. I didn't know the machine had metal blades before I bought it. Most machines have the plastic blades I'm afraid. Older machines are more likely to have metal blades.
