Yup since people were scammed into thinking tax funded consumer protection regs by the government would automagically "protect" them, that we all need to take off our tin foil hats, and scams would never be allowed to permeate any industry in our oh so civilized western faux-free trade markets.

The time to take a stand would have been when prices went up. Not now that prices are dropping.

@@jamesmcd71 Firstly, it wasn't until long after market prices had been skewed by scalpers that any of the manufacturers started raising their prices.
Secondly, most of the people who bought GPUs from scalpers during the pandemic weren't spending their own money. The company they worked for covered the costs since the system was needed for them to do their jobs from home.

Most people don't understand that Nvidia is overvalued in the stock market they don't have revenue to match the stock valuation. They are not a Trillion dollar company which is their current stock value. Their revenue is expected to increase but current is in the tens of billions and maybe over a hundred billion next year, or it won't and the stock will drop in price because of not enough revenue to support the valuation. Don't base a company on the stock valuation as stock is literally gambling on the future value of a company not the current value.
Revenue is where you hurt a company when you don't purchase their products.

Second hand workstations can be a good base. I bought an HP Z4 G4 recently for under £300 with 512GB SSD (SATA) and 32GB of DDR4 (it takes NVMe too) and an Nvidia Quadro card (not really for gaming ). It came with Windows 10 *for Workstations* too (improved filing system IIRC).
The W2123 Xeon CPU it had installed isn't anything special but £65 found a W2135 which has 6 cores at up to 4.5 GHz. The W2145 (8 cores) is a bit more, same speed. I think it can turbo most of the cores at close to that 4.6 GHz too. It's still even a current model. A lot of them are around from recyclers.

Yes, parts got faster for same price. Mostly.
But on GPUs, you need to go really high end to see a **decent** uplift, if any. 300 to even 600 dollars GPUs doesn't offer much more right now compared to what they did in 2020. Forget about 100 to 300 class, that's completly dead. And in 2020, this trend was more or less already going. In 2023, compagnies just want to keep there outreagous margins they made during the pandemic.
I bought a 7900XTX. I'm happy with it. But i still think the GPU market is horrific right now. I just bought what I think made the most sens for someone wanting a high end GPU like me. But i'm typicly buying around 700 to 900€. Not 1k€ like I did there. That didn't felt great at all.
So if even someone like me, that can go pretty high end for pc parts and STILL being disgust by pricing, I just can't imagine what it is for someone in the low to mid-range. It's simply terrible. So I get why people are simply not interested anymore.
And if this can give an eletro-shock to the market to wake up, that could be great.

Should the item you have bought be broken or too far gone to your liking, you just file a refund, get a new shipping tag and send it right back. Once its back with the buyer you get your money returned to you.
Pretty sweet if you ask me

On the eBay search, I’d select US only, lowest price, and select the condition such as new/open box/refurb/used…which means leaving “for parts and not working” off the search. BIN offers the quickest but not the best prices. Selecting sold can give a realistic view of current prices. Auctions with bidders that have zero feedback could be risky since they often bid more than what the item is worth or maybe it’s just shill bidding by the seller to boost the final price. Don’t forget that some cards, such as the 5700 XT, require a more powerful PSU.

My system was also pretty new/clean build so they were pretty aware of my ownership/use/maintenance. Other gpus ive shown pics of dis-assembly re-pastes etc on 5700xts i was flipping during the GPU goldrush/mass sell off. Some buyers are suspicious but if ppl are serious theyre willing to consider their options and if theyre savy and aware of how to run their systemes etc...ive only had one issue with a used 5700xt strix with my irl friend bc of VBIOS and Asus GPU tweak overriding RADEON/arenalin into the GPU running "idle/0rpm" mode INTO LOAD...80c etc...which is still the Gpu/vbios/asus isolated issue. The red devil and nitro+ i was flippin those owners never complained or the 2080ti strix i sold with the RDR2 demo. EVEN the ppl i was buying the 300$ or less 5700xts from to FLIP for 400$ were pretty trustworthy quick replies and relatively aware of the temps/ranges and were intent on telling me to UV/OC curve them as they did XD for better temps tdp etc. That is what sold me on their card vs other ppl offering used GPU that had little to communicate to me as a buyer or little confidence to offer in my purchase....Simple msgs like "have you flashed the vbios or is it the same as when you own/purchased" or what are your OPERATING temps under load? etc....a legit seller will be able to verify those questions and help you make a more confident 2nd hand purchase vs an owner of a "high level gpu" having little info to offer as an owner/operator.

Buying used for several years now and have found really good deals so far, but the used market had changed a lot. Less good deals and much more scammers.
One big problem at the time, as Jay has seen, the pricing on the used market are also high. They change much slower than the retail market and people are trying to refund as much as possible of their overpriced purchase hoping for someone bad informed and buying it for the high price instead of waiting for a better deal.
Furthermore, scammer have reached a new level. As an example on the privat side of ebay - dont know if it is available outside of germany - many accounts of reputable sellers are getting stolen and used for scamms. So it is realy hard to determine whi is a legit seller and who just use the account of one unothorised.
Hope it calms down in the next time
And for a deal i recently made: bought a Rx6800xt for around 400€. Not the best deal, considering new pricing at the moment, but at the time it was nearly 200€ off.

The G variants have half l3 cache, the same cache that allows the 7800x3d to be the fastest gaming processor, so in cpu limited situations or games that like that cache, it will be inferior.

For a server PSU and cooling and memory inspection and they usually need new (types) of drives mostly flash these days because the old one were shredded. For a dGPU component paste and thermal pads and for a US domestic seller email them and ask. Glad to see a secondary "open market" report. mb

I've been building PC's for about 25yrs now, upgrading for even longer than that. I went from constantly upgrading parts every 6 months or so... perhaps a complete rebuild every 18 months... to making my PC's last 4-5yrs on average.
    My current build is from April 2020, didn't get a GPU because I'd bought a 5700XT just 7 months earlier. X570, 32GB, 3800X, 500GB PCI-E4 nvme and a couple of 1TB SSD's along with a 6TB HDD for backups and older games.
Over the last 3yrs I upgraded the GPU to a 6900XT when prices dropped last year. Still paid a lot, but sold my 5700XT to a friend for a decent price. I then upgraded to a 5800X3D and have added some extra storage... A 4TB Samsung SSD & a 1TB Sabrent NVME. I put the 3800X into my mediaserver (where most of my older parts go first) and underclocked it to 3ghz so I could undervolt it (1.1v now) because it's just a mediaserver and doesn't need to be fast or turbo, Runs cooler, less heat still faster than it needs to be... and I gave the 2600X from that system to the same friend who had the GPU for his new system.
My parts usually go from me, to my mediaserver or my mum/friends and for knock down prices or even for free. I rarely sell stuff online anymore because of scammers trying to rip you off and claim something is damaged/broken to get their money back.
Bad sellers are just as common as bad buyers.

The last PC part I bought brand new (for myself) was an i7 7700K. Since then, all of the hardware has been bought used (Actually, now that I think about it, the RAM I still use now was the last thing I bought new, Crucial Ballistix RGB 3600Mhz DDR4, which was VERY pricey at the time).
My CPU was bought just after the 5800X3D came out. It's a Ryzen 5900X that I got for €300,- which was a great deal at the time. The previous owner had bought the 5800X3D and just wanted to get rid of his 'old' CPU quickly. There were no problems with the CPU and it's still in use in my current PC.
A less than great deal, was the RTX 2080 that I got, near the end of the stupid inflated price cycle for GPU's. It had a waterblock on it, but I mounted a Raijintek Morpheus cooler on it, because I did not want to go back to open loop water cooling. Besides, half the screws were missing on this card, so it wasn't that good of a deal, 'even' at €550,- (At that point, most cards were 600 and up), but at least the original blower cooler was also provided, so when I was able to get a 2080ti for €320,- a few months later (Also with a blower cooler) from a datacenter that had used it for 3D modeling, I was able to revert the MSI 2080 back to original and use the Raijintek cooler on the Gigabyte 2080ti. Right now, I still own that card.
Anyway, I have bought a LOT of used goods over time, often putting them together in a PC and then reselling the PC, usually with close to no profit, because it's pretty much just a hobby anyway.
I currently have an RTX3090 for sale, but for some reason (Probably the fact that it's water cooled and open loops are not very popular here) it still hasn't sold, despite me offering it for a very low price. A lot of 'interested' people keep underbidding it with ridiculous amounts, despite my card being one of the cheapest offerings already, so I keep having to tell them, that I am not selling it for the price of a 3080 and if that's their budget, than they'd need to make a choice of either buying a 3080, or increasing their budget, but... Never mind that.
Also, the Raijintek cooler I have won't fit on that 3090 and one that WOULD fit, costs €150,- so that's why I am not going to use it myself.
    .....
I don't even know why I am writing all of this, I highly doubt anybody is going to read (all of) this, so... If you did, bonus points for you!
    Have a nice day!

Nice to see an informative piece making users aware that options exist. That said my engagement dropped because of my and most of the responses I saw said:
    Bad economy
Overpriced and underdelivered for a supposed generation increase
Current build does what I need it to and the headroom for more isn't worth the cost of replacement, because of the second point.
It feels like Intel's tick took, but more of the minor improvements over anything actually justifiable.
Maybe if I were in the market to bump up from something like an nvidia 70/80 to a 90 I might care, but it's just not interesting right now with all of those factors.
Would love to see pieces where water cooling is covered more in depth, really need to set up a custom loop because I don't want to blend an AIO with a custom loop just to cool my GPU, and every time I try to research into it I get overwhelmed.
Would also love to see you do some really fancy builds, like modding an Xbox case as a no bars held PC with liquid cooling or something.

The price then kept dropping until it reached £106 and was then listed as 'unavailable'... Thanks to the amazon price guarantee... they honour the lower price. I had to wait about 3 months, but they shipped it for that price.
I still have the card, during the pandemic my employers kept putting of the authorisation for my work PC (I work from home since 2017 anyway)... and then the shortages hit. I managed to talk them into letting me buy a used GPU as nothing was available through their channels that wasn't 3x the msrp... and sold my own RX580 (that I'd replaced with a 5700XT in late 2019 (also a good deal, £75 under MSRP due to ordering a 5700 and amazon shipping the 5700XT) to my company for £400.
2 great GPU's ended up costing me about £30 as a result.

I got a 1080 Ti FE in August of 2017 for $600 on Craigslist Los Angeles… they were still going for full retail at that time. It wasn’t a scam, the guy was cool… we met at Fry’s in Burbank when I worked there for a short time.

25:46 There's also cash frauds going on, so even with cash be careful
over here in nz we have those plastic moneys, but ppl found a way to wash the ink and reprint a $100 on $10 notes, but you can catch it out by looking at the security window which will have markings of the $10 note

Hey Jay, what is your opinion about E5, v4 Xeons (LGA2011-3) together with cheap chinese MoBo?
THose CPUs dropped significantly in price in the recent months (Both the MoBos and the CPUs).
They use DDR4 ECC RAM, which has also dropped in price a lot (like halved in the last year)

I have a 3800X and it holds back the 3070 at 1080p, understandably so, but pairing Zen 2 with Ampere involves some slight bottlenecking.

I have been thinking about getting a 3080/ti or 3090/ti used.
One Ebay, using the filters on the side really helps.
Best deal with computers, my RTX 2080. Bought it as an End of Line clearance, 33% off brand new.

Question! What do I do if I want to sell some of my old PC parts as a one time thing (I just upgraded some of them). I have never sold on any platform before, so I have no credit. Would appreciate your thoughts!

Another reason to go 3000 series Nvidia over 2000 is those 3000 cards still may have warranty left, and many sellers will give you the original receipt.

This is what I ran into while helping my son with his AMD build especially with the motherboard. What brand do you feel comfortable giving your money to? Went through the list of manufacturers and kept saying "Nope. Nope, Nope" until there was no one left. Really like the look and layout of the Gigabyte boards but not confident of getting an RMA if needed.
